Hi! Sorry to bug you folx, but with search disabled I am having a hard time finding a post (or was it an article?) I once read here. It was all about what goes into the rankings presented on the F11 screen - I found it very informative and am interested in rereading it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks!

That's it - thanks!

Can I play one of the civs that came with C3C in a regular epic game? I like the COnquests, but I wanted to try one of the new tribes in a game just from scratch without having to play the conquest.

Answers to stupid questions are often the most appreciated...

Yes, many of the Civs are available in the Epic Game: Dutch, Portuguese, Maya, Inca, Byzantine , Hittite, Sumeria. The other new Civs are Conquest-specific. (Except for Austria - it has all the necessary artwork, data files, etc. to be a full-fledged Civ, but wasn't added because of the 31-Civ max limit. It can be added, but you must replace another Civ with it.)

Thanks Padma, I was hoping that was the answer. I have C3C installed and I thought if I just put in my C3 cd-rom, maybe the new civs would appear as options-- alas, they are not there! Is there something special I should do?

Much appreciated!

Put your Conquests CD in the Drive, Start Conquests, and choose "New Game" from the main menu. That's all there is to it. The Epic Game is standard Civ3, with the assorted Rule changes, new Civs, New Units, etc. from PTW and Conquests added in.

(Unless you want to play Vanilla Civ3 with the new Civs. Then you have to go through all the rigamarole of adding the Civs, etc. ;) )

I just got a Scientific Great Leader. I selected Boost Scientific Output and I would like to know what that does, exactly. From what I can see not much.

I got a message that said:
"We have entered an age of great scientific discovery"

Science slider is at (50%)
Science funding in Constantinople went from 24 gpt to 30 gpt. I also notice science funding in other cities has increased about 20 - 25%.

This has not resulted in a decrease in research time for Astronomy as I had expected.

So, I ask; what did my SGL accomplish in boosting scientific output?

IIRC it increases scientific output in all cities by 25%

I did notice the increase in scientific funding. Science and treasury both say 50% on the city screen; but the the numbers are not equal. A quick calculation shows a difference of around 25% in the two.

Perhaps I am wrong about research time of my current research project (Astronomy) not decreasing. Further testing is necessary, I guess.

Thanks!

i mean, the money you spend on sci research is inrcreaed by 25% the percent of your income devoted to scientific research remains the same

Appreciate the help...

My wife is starting to wonder what all the fuss is about! ;)

I have 2 completely unrelated questions:

1) Does a Nuclear Meltdown happen randomly, or only when your city is rioting/ in city disorder? If randomly, what are the chances?

2) Where can I find the Space Race Win Video without playing the game all over again? I really like it, and I want to watch it again, but I am not really wanting to start another game up again.

Meltdown does never happen in a not-rioting city.
*AFAIK* meltdown can happen if the city in question is in disorder - don't know about the chances here, but I think it's not even near 100%.

The last autosave, might be an option.

Where can I find a good thread or article on the working of ONC?

I'd like to know whether my existing cities will become more corrupt, when crossing the ONC.

Stapel, alexmans corruption guide in the strategy articles forum is what you want. It explains everything in full (remember that it is written for Civ3/PTW but still gives useful OCN info).

Also - any city you build will *not* increase corruption in any city with a lower rank. This means any city closer to the Palace (or FP in Civ3/PTW) will not have increased corruption, but all further away cities will "drop" a rank and therefore have increased corruption.

Once a cities rank is > OCN/2 it the corruption between that city and the next in rank increases faster. For example, if OCN is 20 the difference in rank corruption between city with rank 9 (C9) and C10 is 'x'% and the difference in rank corruption between C10 and C11 is 'y'%, where 'y' > 'x'. Essentially the rank corruption formula changes for cities with rank > OCN/2, so you rapidly approach 95% corruption after the first OCN/2 closest cities. If this makes no sense please read alexmans article!!

alexman's corruption thread is the source.
Stick to "Fc=..." part of the corruption formula, then you get an idea how the OCN-corruption part kicks in. OCNs for the different map sizes are also found in that thread (and values for further modifiers like gov type), you could also look into the editor (which is good anyways to get to know the difficulty modifier of OCN).
In short: if you have a function that describes the relation between city rank and OCN corruption, it's like this:
city ranks below OCN-related variable: OCN-corruption climbs linear with city rank at a certain (not so strong) gradient
city rank overflows OCN-related variable: OCN-corruption climbs stronger with rank number (still linear), i.e. dy/dx is now bigger than before (but constant)

Roughly, looks like this:
Code:
         x

       x

    x
  x
x
1-2-3-4-5 ->

x-axis: rank number
y-axis: OCN-related corruption
In this simple example, OCN-overflow kicks in when a city's rank is 4 or higher. In a game, you'd need to figure this rank barrier and have to count the cities that have different ranks.

PS: In case I got all this wrong, correct me please...:)

The exception to that Stapel is under communism, where every city has the same rank corruption, and it is based on # cities/OCN.

Edit: Grilles pic showed what I was trying to say in a much better way! :)
