Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this, but in CivIII/PTW (whatever you played last) it should be the Worldseed=#######... line in the Configuration file.

could some one tell me what the palace rank exploit is?
The short answer is this: don't put any cities close to your Palace.

I know this sounds counterintuitive, as it deprives you of a normal low-corruption-core of cities. However, since one of the corruption factors is distance from the capitol, all your cities are basically plotted on a curve. What this does is flattens the curve since the cities come closer together in an average distance.

The links provided are good ones (remember this doesn't work in Conquest). For further reading, I suggest SirPleb's deity level threads in the CFC HOF. He's got good graphs giving good visual illustration of this.

Even if you don't understand the mechanics, rest assured this works. If you play a huge map, use a GL or something to jump your Palace to a remote island, say at least 35 tiles or so from any city, and you'll see your Empire wide income jump by as much as 50%!!!

Those are the numbers showing your set percentages for income/science/luxury. Play with the slider under the F1 advisor then back out to the mainscreen and you'll see the changes.

I think the short answer is a little too short! :)

The nearly as short answer is this: put your cities closer to your Forbidden Palace than to your Palace.

I have to admit, that is a superior answer Dianthus.

Is this a "bug" that they are going to fix in the next patch, or is it just a part of the game?

Now that C3C is out, it's highly unlikely there will be another patch for PTW. However, the Palace exploit was negated in C3C itself. I say negated rather than fixed since overall corruption is now worse than ever before.

Question:

Newbie question...but how do you use Jet Fighters? Specifically, their functions beyond those of normal Bombers. Can they attack ground units? or other planes?

to attack other planes put it on air supiriority, but it only has a CHANCE of shooting down a plane if it within 3 tiles of where it is based

Can a GA be triggered by defeating barb's?

How does research work at the beginning of the game? No matter how much science I'm producing, it still says 50 turns until I make my next breakthrough. What's going on?

There is a minimum and maximum number of turns for research.

No matter how much you put in you can never research faster than 4 turns. No matter how little you put in (as long as you put something in) you will never take more than 50 turns to research.

When you have 1 city it will say 50 turns for most techs, but if you set that to max you will be earning enough to get it down to 30 turns or so if you expand a bit. On higher levels people tend to do "minimum research", i.e. they put in the minimum possible in to science (often a single scientist, or 10% tech slider) and wait 50 turns for the tech.

Before conquests it was 40 turns, and in earlier versions it was even 32. They have been increasing it because people have found it possible to do a 'minimum tech gamble' and still research before the AI (by choosing the right tech). This was a good way to make money on higher levels. Now (at least on Sid level) it is almost impossible to get a tech before the AI by using this.

Thanks, that's interesting. I think it's a bit of a poor show to just make the opening techs take a really long time to research. Last game I started I noted that my money was best spent going into my tax, but then the only way to know when I could lower the time it was taking was by changing the tax slider every turn = annoying.

Personally I don't see the problem with being able to get a tech before the AI, seems like another fix they put in to stop advanced tactics that messed things up for everyone. Now whenever I meet an AI it's quite standard for them to have six new techs in the time it takes me to research one.

If six Civs each research a different tech and trade it around, then it appears that they researched six in the time it took you to research one. This is how you keep up in research on the higher levels.
