What exactly is the function of a landmark terrian? I've seen it in the editor, and have heard people talk about it, but didn't understand what it is that they do.

A quick one: I've got civ3 vanilla and having just got the internet i've just installed 1.27 patch. Now when I attack a city with pop of 2 and when my second guy attacks the city's pop drops to one, meaning I can't take it coz of the auto-raze. This really has me stumped and is quite annoying.
Any idea why it happens?

Cheers

Was there a turn between your 1st/2nd attack? If so maybe the AI drafted or pop-rushed? Note that you CAN capture a 1 pop city, but only if it's borders have expanded.

Perhaps there is.
In C3C, in the upper left corner of the main screen, click the triangle-shaped Options button and then choose Map Preferences (or Map Options, or something like that).
In the following screen, you can toggle several map elements to be displayed or not, such as forests, mines and I BELIEVE even cities.
IIRC, turning cities off also causes all units to disappear from sight! So this probably isn't the solution you're looking for.
Still, it may be useful to take a look at the Map Preferences.

It was on the same turn, which is what really puzzled me.

Normal attacks can't cause the population to drop. Artillary bombards can, however.
So I guess you must have bombarded the city before moving in the 'real' troops.

Here's one I feel like I should know, but I'll just ask instead of going looking:

Let's say I sign a MA with Spain vs England. I do not have the "always renegotiate" option on. After 24 turns, I destroy England. The MA is still in effect, although past the twenty turns. Do I take the rep hit?

Denyd was just talking about this in GK's TDG but in reverse. He said that if you sign a MA with Persia against the Zulu, then kill off the Zulu except 1 town and let Persia Kill them for you, Persia will get the rep hit and you can declare against them. So if I understood Denyd correctly the answer is yes.

I know that, but I think you may have missed the integral part of the question: the twenty turns is expired, but the deal has not been canceled, so isn't it the same as just canceling the deal?

I was aware that destroying the civ counts as breaking the deal WITHIN the twenty turns.

I always thought that it is permitted to finish off an enemy while in a MA.
After all, isn't the ultimate purpose of a MA destroying the third civ? Why would doing so give you a rep hit?

While I can't answer your question appropriately, I can tell you that it happens. It is probably a programming issue because the deal can no longer be honored if the third civ does not exist. I agree that it is rather illogical, but that is just one more glitch on the radar screen.

(not a complaint, I love the game, even with all the flaws)

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I captured a size 1 city and the city was NOT auto-razed! ;)

Conditions:
1. C3C 1.15
2. PBEM game
3. City captured was Human Civ's (Mayan)
4. NO border expansion

Seems like that has happened to me when the AI has captured one of my "culture-less" size-1 cities!? :crazyeye:

???????? :hmm:

I saw a list of the autoraze conditions somewhere....I'll check the academy.

it had something to do with culture accumulated for capturing civ, which I assume was 0 in this case.

*runs off to library*

Sorry, can't find it w/o a search right now.

autorazing was also discussed in depth in the "civ 3 quiz" thread, you could also look there.

I know citizen nationality was included, size, culture (doesn't have to be more than ten, 1 is sufficient IIRC) etc. I'm too lazy to look through the many pages though.

The question was posed by Arathorn, so he would be a good person to ask .....

I need help finding info on

Military police
Pop-rushing
Accelerated production
Drafting

I play DyP 1.01r, but felt these were aspects of the Civ 3 game that hadn't changed with the mod. I've never used any of these features, but as I move up in difficulty, I see where I need to be fluent with them.

Thanks for your help. This site has been a great resource and allowed me to progress my game and my level of enjoyment. Without the knowledge found here I would have burned the unhelpful manual and let this game rot on the shelf. Instead, I find myself playing until the wee hours of the morning and making up reasons to stay home from work. Thanks, I think?!!!

Your first question, and you knew where to post it? I'm impressed. :)

Acc prod cuts the req shields for everything in half. Most people always leave it off.
Drafting and MP are contingent on the govt typr, check the civilopedia for specifics for each govt.

Pop rushing is a bit more complicated. basiucally you use you cities' pop to rush a build. the first citizen is worth 1-19 shields, each additional worth another twenty, I believe. Note theat you can't rush something if it will consume more than half the pop of the city.

MANY things changed in DyP, so you may want to consult the appropriate thread for specifics.

I've been reading here for a while, but don't be impressed just yet!

Thanks for your answers. I understand the basic concepts, but I don't know how to perform them. For instance...how does one take a warrior and make it an MP? I can't find it anywhere. Same with pop rushing...how do you do it?

I'm also interested in the ramifications of the actions.

It seems silly I've been playing for about 8 months and I don't know how to do these things. That's what I get for staying on Chieftan for so long, I guess!

I told you not to be impressed yet! I'm also an A's fan, so that may explain it, eh?

Thanks, again, for any help you can provide. (btw, Sox blow.) :nya:

Certain governments will allow MP's in each city to help with happiness.
You will want to look up what ever gov't in question to see how much help you will get from each.

Despotism for example allows for 2 MP's per town. Which means that if you place 2 units(military, artiillary units do not count) in a city they will make 2 un-happy citizens content.

Hope this helps.

And welcome to our strange little world.

Edit: I just saw the second part of your question

Pop rushing is done from with in the city view of the city that you want to rush the unit in. Just to the left of the building Q there is a small button(its the one next to the city manager) if you hover over it it will tell you what it is. Press this button and an advisor will tell you how many "citizens" your action will cost. Also this is only available on certain types of Gov't. The Gov'ts that don't "pop rush" use money for the same thing. you can pay to speed production.

Add on Edit:2004 win loss % Boston: .597 ~ Yankees .656 ~ Twins .548 ~ A's .607 -----you draw your own conclusions

Using any ground combat unit (not settlers, workers, leaders or artillery) as MP (military police) is simply a matter of putting them in the city. If you look at the city screen, you will notice that the first two (on Monarchy, none on Dem and Rep, dunno for others) units in the lineup have little smily faces by them. This means they're enforcing contentment. The strength, experience, and modernity of the unit is irrelevant, I often have regular spearmen pulling MP duty in my interior cities into the Industrial Age, a warrior does it as well as mech infantry, although in cities that face attack you'll obviously want your strongest units, so pull obselete units back to do MP duty.

Pop rushing, while unpleasant, is also simple. You just hit the rush production button next to the production box while in a govt that allows it: despotism, feudalism (I think), Commiehood, Fascism.

Oh yes, and it's the Yankees who suck.
