So (ignoring the bits where people talk about the units inside the army), the benefit'd be for retreats, and an army cannot become veteran through combat. That seems rational.

I could've sworn that all armiues started out as regulars and then got promoted slowly (as units inside them got promoted.)
It seems although i have a barracks and a mil acad in the city, and every other city has barracks, that my armies always come out regular, 16/16, armies..

When I build a new city, I usually build some cultural improvement ASAP so I can get some expansion. However, I noticed that sometimes when a city is built it has more than the 3x3 grid. I don't remember the conditions. Can someone enlighten me?

Regards.

As Mistfit says, if the new city has only a 1-square gap to your border, you will include that square in your "new" border!

(@Mistfit: Did "inflation" increase our city size from 9 to 10? )

I know the borders expand if the new city is close enough. But, the new city also had more than 9 squares. Again, this is just 'sometimes'. I don't know what 'sometimes' is. When I saw it, I thought it was odd.

Regards.

Armies, in and of themselves, are not really regulars or vets or whatever. Each individual unit in the army retains its rank and promotes accordingly.

As far as I can tell you get the "free" squares where the 21-tile radius of the new city will contact your existing borders, or part of the 21-tile radius of a border city that has not expanded, viz. if you build cxxc in one direction and cxxxc perpendicular then you needn't build any culture buildings at all. But you need to conquer your opponents to avoid culture flips. :hammer:

If there is a 1 tile gap between borders, it closes automatically unless claimed by another civ. Parallel borders that is, nor cornered.

Correct. The regular/veteran/elite status of the army is just a label. The individual units not only retain their rank and promote accordingly, but also fight individually in decreasing rank.

Example: You have an army with 1 elite and 1 veteran and 1 regular cavalry. First the elite unit attacks with its 5 hitpoints. If it looses 5 rounds, the army does not die, but the veteran cavalry continues the attack. And then the regular. Only if you loose all 12 hitpoints, the army dies (or the last unit retreats and the army survives).

IIRC an army is labeled elite, if it contains only elite units.

This is at least so in 1.29, can't say for PtW or C3C.

this may be somewhat silly, but how do i post a poll? when starting a new thread i write the relevant txt and then before posting i tick the poll box, then i preview the post but still no option to actually writing the polling options appears?

There is supposed to be a check box that says "include a poll?".

What are the rules governing the value of MPPs? I know the AI determines the value of ROP treaties by the amount of land both of you own- if they own more than you, then you pay more for the treaty. But what does the AI take into consideration when you offer a MPP?
