I have had some success producing the GS's but it has taken me a while to figure out how to unlock what I want unlocked. For example, I now avoid Sailing for a bit to keep my GS off of compass/optics detour.

Can anyone else share some specific 'avoids' if I am shooting for quick Liberalism? Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks in advance,
- O

PS: I have seen:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=140952
but that doesn't cover the prerequisites, which are all tangled.

Nothing specific but have you checked out this thread: Great People Tech Prefences. It basically lays out the preferences for the Great People lightbulbing. It implicitly has this info for you but not what you want in an easy to use format.

Edit: Oops you already saw that. Must remember read completely then post.

Actially you do not need to avoide anything for fast liberalism.

Good think to GS ligbulb:

Philosofy - Prerequisites(Meditation, Col or Dramma + Math)
Paper - (Civil service or Theology)
CS is a prerequisite for Liberalism, so you need it anyway.

Education (Paper)

If you know correct prerequisites for this 3 tech GS allways will offer to LB them, they are higher priority then anything else.

Thanks once again to Dave McW for the list (my notations in italics);

Great Scientist

Writing ... required
Mathematics ... not essential but unavoidable
Scientific Method ... advanced
Physics ... advanced
Education ... required

Printing Press ... Education will be offered first - prerequisites Paper and Machinery - will be offered before Philosophy if tech's acquired out of order
Fiber Optics ... advanced
Computers ... advanced
The Wheel ... hmmm
Philosophy ... required

Chemistry ... advanced and incompatible with Liberalism bee-line
Fission ... advanced
Fusion ... advanced
Optics ... prerequisites of Compass and Machinery
Paper ... required

So it seems to me that non-essential technologies that a Great Scientist will lightbulb before Paper are The Wheel, Mathematics, Optics, and Printing Press. The Wheel is entry-level, Mathematics is unavoidable because Writing is required for the slingshot so you must acquire Mathematics somehow if using Great Scientist lightbulbing, and the traps would be;
  • acquiring Machinery and Compass to put Optics in front of Paper, or
  • acquiring Machinery and Education for Printing Press before accessing Philosophy.
The Beeline Book by VoiceOfUnreason might also be of interest.

this is wrong
I'm pretty sure I've gone the theology (using a prophet I couldn't avoid for sure) route all the way to liberalism already. CS is kind of a deadend tech ;).

Cam_H, that is exactly the kind of analysis I was hoping to see - thanks! Unfortunately, DaveMcW's list to liberalism that I have seen is much longer:

Writing
Mathematics
Scientific Method
Physics
Education
Printing Press
Fiber Optics
Computers
The Wheel
Philosophy
Chemistry
Fission
Fusion
Optics
Paper
Astronomy
Biology
Electricity
Flight
Genetics
Compass
Satellites
Sailing
Alphabet
Calendar
Medicine
Ecology
Iron Working
Metal Casting
Engineering
Steam Power
Liberalism

Am I crazy? To be clear, I also want to lightbulb Liberalism, of course!

It does sound like there is a consensus that philo, paper, and edu should be lightbulbed.

Thank you,
- O

You have to understand that the lightbulb won't be available if you don't have the prerequsite techs. For lightbulbing Liberalism itself with a scientist the key is to skip Fishing. You must also
- skip Machinery (or get both Machinery and Printing Press)
- skip Gunpowder (or Machinery)

(Heh. Too tricky to make all my corrections before getting the Last Edited tag. I've made at least a dozen edits now.)

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. Under 'normal' circumstances I would suspect that it would be quicker to self-research Liberalism than to pop a fourth or fifth Great Scientist having just burned one on Education. I could be wrong - I think it's happened twice before ;)!

Best of luck with it! :)
