It doesn't have any sulphur and phosphoros in its physical constitutoin and therefore it cannot be destroyed through oxidation. How the Ancient Indians made this pillar is a mystery still.
The spectacular Erich von Däniken claims in his book "Unsolved Mysteries of the Human past" (or similar) that this is one of the evidences for that Earth got Alien visitors in early Ancient times. Dänikens book is very well worth reading if you want some entertaining because he builds up his arguments very well. Probably he doesn't actually belive in this himself, but the book can be regarded as a criticism of Modern History Writing. Think yourself: why were all Ancient of pre-Ancient things one finds used in a religious cult of something? Had pre-Ancient people really no daily common life??
