The original DOS version of Railroad Tycoon is unplayable. Online, where can I download the deluxe version (I have a link, but it's broken ...)?

Don't bother. Railroad Tycoon II Gold is vastly superior, and dirt cheap right now. Get it and you'll be very happy!

I used to own RRT Deluxe - liked for only one reason: the intro music!

RR Tycoon is GREAT!!!

BTW shouldn't this be in another forum?

AZ-

I obtained a copy of both RRT and Colonization from the same benevolent abandonware site, hence my cognitive correlation between the two. As I recall, this particular collection had been forced from its old server, which barred all of the download links siting a "violation of the terms of service provided", moved, ran out of bandwidth and crashed, and now is slowly dying. Better grab all of the neat titles while you can.

Using Alta-Vista, enter +"GAO Games" in the search field and it will be the foremost link. PC and Amiga (sorry Mac owners) titles you can grab:

Civ I for DOS (be warned: the intro theme, or "STORY.TXT", has been modified to include racial slurs)
WinCiv (cheap, in my opinion)
Pirates! and Pirates! Gold
Railroad Tycoon
A-TRAIN (don't bother downloading - no delay added)
Dune II
-and more, however the links are becoming increasingly broken.

The TTG Guy used to own a site with several of these downloadable commercial classics (and in-depth info on each of them).

Well, GenghisK, you can buy an antiquated PC in addition to your Mac just to play abandonware games ... I did

I sold a decrepit 386 only a few months ago for all it was worth - 10 American dollars! It entailed a system disk to run a pirated copy of "Commander Keen", which was in essence the only worthwhile thing it could do. When the 3 1/2" floppy drive gave way, I modified the BIOS to bypass it when initializing, and conveniently failed to inform the buyer of the machine of its shortcomings. One other thing: the hard drive maintained the only copy worldwide of "Explosions", an old game I made in BASIC, never compiled.

Instead of purchasing a new computer, one I couldn’t afford, I bought a ’97 Compaq Presario. Though it ran every abandonware game I downloaded, it’s merely a stopgap until I can buy one that is capable of running Civ III with reasonable speed.

Note that SMAC and Civ II are the only games I've truly purchased.

Well I'm actually considering buying a thre years old crappy old PC (all PCs are crap anyway; right GK? ).

GK says there's a nice way of getting free games online; through hotline.
But since I seem to be unable to get connected there...

PC's are crappy? As opposed to, what, Crapin... I mean, Macintrash?

I detest Microshaft Winblows, but, for now, my pirated "abandonware" copy of it will have to do

Where can I get it ?

I bought Railroad Tucoon II Gold at Costco (full box for about $14.99 I think) a year ago.

It is also on discount racks at computer stores for $9.99 (CD Only).

As primarily a PC user for 20 years, I can say a Mac is a superior machine for certain jobs, especially in Multimedia and Professional Publishing. The PC (as run by Micro$oft Windoze) really is often inferior. Linux and Unix are often superior in some areas, too.

In short, there is no "perfect" OS, and it's silly to trash a given OS out of hand. Its even sillier to imply an insult by association for users of a given machine, LOL!

I was looking for this thread; the administrator remitted it: with good reason. Sorry

Anyhow, I must say that I detest the general notion of a "WIMP" (Window, Icon, Menu, Pointing Device) environment being integrated with my system; I did, however, LOVE MS-DOS 5.0. I plan on upgrading to 98-Lite, which is in essence MS Windows 98 without Internet Explorer pre-installed and "harmonized" with the OS (After all, I browse with Navigator 3.04). I am using Windows 95, which is a reasonable GUI, but want the additional speed and vcache support.

I still dislike the Macintosh GUI, albeit I never had much time to play around with it. Perhaps its because my highschool indoctrinated me to use them without reproach... Nevertheless, I was somewhat inebriated (AT SIX O'CLOCK?) when I giddly made those remarks, but over the years my piers have contrived/assumed "interesting" names for various operating systems:

Concerning...
MS Windows:
Program mangler
Microshaft Winblows
Microsh*t
etc...

MS DOS:
DOS "HELL" (refering to DOSSHELL)

MacOS:
Crapple
Macintrash
Macinwash
Crapintosh
etc...

UNIX:
Weenix
...

What have I done! Now this doesn't even allude to "other games".
