Rammstein!!

For some reason I've never really listened to them, even though everyone and their mother is a fan.
I've seen them live at Roskilde 2002, but that was boring; just noise (which every industrial song is, if you haven't listened to it before ;)), and a tiny guy 3 million meters away pissing on his mate.

My gf is talking about forcing me to listen to them, maybe I'll come out of the Rammstein closet in a month. ;)

*puts the new Ministry album in the playlist*

Mein Teil translates to My Part, yes that means his penis.

See, thats why we love Ramstein, they can sing about their penis and still be heavy.

Yeah, saw them live in 2004. They put on a really good show, quite a lot of pyrotechnics and other fun stuff.

The lyrics are indeed often pretty sick; Mein Teil for example is not just about the narrator's penis, but specifically based on the Meiwes/Brandes cannibalism case (so the narrator in that song would be the guy who supposedly volunteered to get killed and eaten, making a last meal of his own penis).

I don't think Rammstein means battering ram, not in any german I've heard of. that would more be Rammbock, or something like that. literally it would mean ram stone/rock, but that makes absolutely no sense.
Who says it needs to make sense? ;)
They indeed named themselves after those tank barriers we used to have on the border between the eastern and western part of Germany during the time of seperation.
And they are definitly not Nazis. I think this myth is based on the fact that their songs are military marches and the rolling pronounciation of the letter "r".

I´ve seen them live on the Hurricane festival in Germany in ´97, when they presented their new album "Sehnsucht". Ah, those were the days! We were about to finish school and enjoyed the combination of loud Rammstein music and alcohol overdoses. Hence my favourite album is "Herzeleid".

well, i recently discovered this band after digging through a friend's mp3 files.

holy schnykies! where have i been all this time?!?!

these dudes rock and rock hard. my wife runs for cover though when i crank it up.

i guess the reason why i'd never heard much from them (i'd heard of them but never listened to any of their songs until recently) was b/c of the language barrier. anyway, i 'wikied' them and found out a bunch a stuff.

so, has anyone ever seen them in concert?

what does the general public in Europe think of them? i read that some of their stuff is controversial in parts of Germany and elsewhere.

any recommnedations on any particular songs?

Everyday for something new, huh? ;) They're good, I have some of their songs in my playlist. Some of my friends attended their concerts, which are usually awesome - a lot of fireworks, they put one of them into a boiler and fired it up with a flamethrower

I think that German language is very well made for hard rock :)

"Battering ram" means "Rammbock" in german. The band is named after the air show desaster in 1988, they even toured under the name "Rammstein Flugshow" in the first weeks/months. First they were seen as Nazis because of the rolling "r" in their songs and because of the lyrics in the live version of "heirate mich!" - they sang "Hei-, hei-, heirate mich!" which sounds like "Heil, Heil..." from "Heil Hitler".

I love Rammstein mainly for their lyrics. They are singing about controversal topics in a provocative way (sp?!). For example about homosexuality, cloning, cannibalism, incest and addiction.
My favourite album is Mutter (2001) and some nice songs are "Engel", "Bück dich", "Feuer frei!", "Spieluhr", "Amerika" and "Mann gegen Mann".

Man, seriously, RAMMSTEIN seriously rock live! I've seen them twice:) I've seen them at Brixton Academy in London and at the International arena in Cardiff. They really do rock out live, and they make very good use f stage props - certainally they do put on a show!

In the UK the 'general public' ignores metal, but there alot of UK metalheads and rock fans who listen to Rammstein, much love for them here!

Obviosuly the whole 'Nazi' thing has been mentioned by other posters, just for anyone who doesn't know the song Links 234 basically translates as saying that people want their hearst 'on the right spot' but when they look down their 'heart beats to the left'. I've also seen interviews where members of the band have stated that they are left-wing inclinded. Plus i've also heard that the singers mum is Jewish, which of course makes him Jewish by default.

Good songs I would recommend to people would be - 'Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?' ' Das alte Leid', 'Sehsucht', 'Du Hast' 'Links 234', 'Sonne', 'Ich Will', 'Mein Teil', 'Benzin'.

well, i'm an old Alice in Chains head. so the twisted lyrics thing isn't too bothersome ;)
Excellent! I'm also a big Alice In Chains fan!:)
And a big 'grunge' fan in general/ I do think of Alice In Chains as grunge, but there certainally is a metal aspect to them as well! I'm going to see them at Download Festival next week, so should be intreasting to see what it's like what with Layne being sadly msised and all.

very nice. i was waiting for you to post :p

i guess i chose poor words to ask how the 'general public' feels about them. i should've probably been more clear and said something like 'rock fans' or 'metal enthusiasts' or something like that...

i've also read that Rammstein's political bend is more to the left. i also seem to recall that they have taken specific measures int he past to not get political or to respond in kind. i can respect that ;)

thanks for the song suggestions. i shall check them out.

i was a huge Chains fan back in the day. i knew they were the shiz-nik the first time i heard Man in a Box back in '91 or thereabouts. i saw them live only once at a Lollapalooza tour in Philadelphia in 1994. they played only one set though.

however, since the remaining members have begun to resurface (where'vya been Cantrell?!), i bought tix to see them at this VH1 thing they had at one of the casinos in Atlantic City (don't ask me why VH1 is working w/ AiC!). it was definitely the weirdest bill i had ever seen. Heart (yes! the chick band!), AiC, Dave Navarro, and Kerrie Underwood (bleh - the American Idol winner from '05). well, my friend and i mosied down to the arena about 25 or 30 minutes after the doors opened and we find out that AiC had already played! yes! man, i was hot! i mean, since when does AiC open for Heart or for Carrie friggin' Underwood?!?! we were so pissed that we said "screw this! we're outta here!" and we left...curse VH1! curse them!

anyhow, please let us all know how AiC sounds when you see them this summer. i am interested to see who is fronting them...i mean, we didn;t even find out who was doing vocals after we missed them in AC.

Ohh shut up! :p

I've seen them live once, and it was probably one of the best concerts I've ever been too (ok as played Slayer played just before them might have contributed a bit aswell).

My personal favourite is probably Herzeleid (their debut album), though Mutter comes close. For some reason I never liked Sehnsucht very much, except for Du Hast and Spiel mit Mir. Reise Reise and Rosenrot are both pretty good.

Will do!:goodjob:

Rammstein Rocks! And I don't even speak/comprehend German.

Their singer is so guttural, its as though he's coughing blood onto the microphone. Very hardcore. The whole instrumental section also kicks ass. The Accordion in Reise Reise is just AWESOME!
