Random-01: The Wheels Come Off

I think we should build a couple of new cities at most. The fish/crabs site to the east of Constantinopole comes to mind. Otherwise just build up what we have now, so that our economy can get us to guilds ASAP and withstand the conquest of our neighbours.

Isn't this great, Alex and Louis have both gone WHTMOOH. I'll have to try and conjure up an army since Alex will probably come for us.

Turn 0: Start with some trades with Pacal. I also made OB with Gus to create some goodwill and hopefully some trade routes. Then for your scheduled :gripe: .

Our two production cities, Thessa and Adrian, are building a library and courthouse. Meanwhile our neghbor is a bloodthirsty backstabber with twice our power. Why aren't we building units? The rest of our cities I configure to run max scientists so that we can catch up in tech. The problem is we still have no friends to trade techs with. Just for that I convert to Judaism (hey, it's no skin off my back). At least Pacal is now Pleased, maybe Alex will think twice before attacking us, too.

Turn 3: Pacal asks to break trade with Wang. I agree. We need a good friend. Darius completes Chicken.

Turn 4: We pop a GE in Constant. Since Metal Casting is on the Guilds path, I decide to lightbulb it. I revolt to Slavery. Meditation sold to Alex for 70 gold, I'd rather have his money.

I tried to make a lot of trades with Alex to dissuade him from attacking.

Turn 9: Went back to Caste System.

Turn 11: We invent Feudalism and enter the Medieval Times in 625 AD. Pacal decides to fund our economy by 11 gpt for some clam. Alex is now also Pleased (a fat lot of good that will do).

Turn 14: I adopt Vassalage and Slavery.

I played 16 to round things off. We did grab Feudalism and Metal Casting and are half way through Machinery. That unlocks Guilds. I spent most of the time making trades to bring in the cash and appease Alex. The production cities are now pumping up longbows, we can start disbanding archers to save some money. I did some whipping but spent most of the time in Caste System trying to squeeze some beakers out of our poor economy.

The most annoying thing is that Pacal still won't trade any useful techs.

Njorls is UP.

Turn 0 (220 total): Whip courthouses in Antioch and Ghuzz

I build walls in Antioch and Visigoth. They're double cheap with Stone. And they buy you some time since they take longer to bombard away.

Turn 4: Alexander declares war...

... On Augustus Ceaser!

Turn 5: Set research to Guilds. Changed to Caste System.

Turn 6: Pacal demands Feudalism. It's our only trade tech with him so I refuse. Start Settler in Thessalonica, we'll need a horse city for Cataphracts (and HBR)

Turn 11: Alexander asks us to declare on Ceaser. I can't even find Ceaser on the map so I agree.

Turn 15: Ceaser has an archer near us. He may be going after the fog busting warrior. There's an axe 1 tile away to deal with him. There's a settler nearby, I figured get the horse city up. 2E of the horses seems like the best spot, we won't need the horses until Guilds and HBR is done so there's time for a monument and border pop.

There's a spy following Alexander's stack of doom to see where Ceaser is.

I built units but also a worker and settler in production cities, maybe I should have gotten out of Vassalage. I stayed in Slavery since I didn't run specialists, I wanted to grow our cities to their happy caps.

This game's going to be tough, those 3 financials are teching like crazy. I didn't make any trades, by the time they would trade they had vassalage already.

I guess we go for some drastic action once we get Cataphracts. Is Darius a good target? I can't see us keeping up with the tech club on peaceful terms. We're not working the Pyramids/SE very well I'm afraid.

The roster:

azaris
njorls (just played)
stuge (UP for 15)
NoChildren (on deck, still fixing BtS?)
tycoonist (OOP)

Darius looks like the best target to me. He's the smallest but has good land. If we can overwhelm him quickly, we'd have a much stronger base for future wars.

Anyway, the fun is about to begin.

hey guys, i'm busy studying for my exams that are coming up and I still haven't figured out how to get my BtS to work. I've tried a re-install, but it didn't work.
I don't think I will be able to play in the next two weeks =((
i'ts a bummer, it would have been a great break from studying. re-installing my entire computer on the other hand is a project I won't be getting into until after exams though...

Domestic

I built some forges and courthouses while guilds and HBR were being researched.
The horse city was built 1S of the stallions. (Gets more grasslands that way.) Now it's time for cataprachts and spies, baby. The former barb city can join the war effort once it finishes the forge it's building. I whipped a library in Ghuzz so we can assign scientists instead of citizens there.

As for research, CS will come in next turn. A pit stop at drama to get our hippodromes to combat WW would be good before continuing on the path to cavalry.

Foreign

According to our EP distribution, Alex will be our first target. He's researching feudalism, ETA 10 turns. His army isn't archer-heavy though, so no biggie. Unfortunately our invasion will be postponed for other reasons, explanation forthcoming.

Desperate for cash, I sold Pacal iron.

I also adjusted our spices for pigs/dyes deal to include 3 gpt from him.

The war with Rome continues. I managed to bag that archer he had wandering near our horses. Right now he wants some gold for peace. We can sign it if we get WW from that war.

I don't know what Louis was thinking here. Apparently he thought he was Iron Man.

Some time later he decided to prove it.

...

...

...

Crap.

The power graph tells us that we might be hosed.

Hopefully this is just something phony and there are no SoDs incoming. Our axe garrison in Ghuzz wiped out a sword/chariot pair that pillaged a hamlet.
I believe that Loius doesn't have OB with Darius, so we can concentrate our defence on the Ghuzz isthmus. But he will bring some spies through Persia to our core, so we should keep our spies home for now.

We cannot invade Greek anyway. If Louis is serious about this war, we'll need every catapracht for defence. No siege weapons means that we'll have a hard time against big stacks.

Good luck. (Save included.)

Louis has been WHTMOOH for a long time now. I don't know, we seem to get dragged into wars with all the wrong people. This game certainly lives up to its name. Worse, we only have three available players at the moment. I would consider a pause until next week to figure out where we're going and hopefully get some of the players back into the roster.

OK, I had a look at it. It's not that bad. Our GNP and MfgGoods are on par with Pacal (the best AI) and we are just about to get Civil Service and start churning out Cataphractoi. Louis looks like a bully with no real teeth as he is on the other side of the world and has no OB with Persia. I recommend we pay Augustus to end the war and then reopen the trade routes with him for added income.

Perhaps tycoonist should do the honors?

I played a turnset since this game has stalled.

First I make peace with Augustus for some gold and arrange for OB.

I also backfill some techs from Darius and renegotiate a lot of deals to enhance our cash flow.

Turn 0: Organized some more specialists and revolted to Bureaucracy. This might or might not have been a :smoke: as I forgot we are not in Theocracy.

Turn 2: Behold Louis' magnificient stack <snicker>.

I make more trades with Pacal. I use the money to pay Louis to take a hike. Peace has been restored and now we can get back to the order of business.

Turn 5: Sell CoL to Alex for 300 gold. He's about to get Feudalism and I want him to have as few longbows as possible.

Turn 11: My cataphractoi stack is amassing near the Greek border. Engineering -> Gunpowder. THIS MEANS WAR! Alex can't fathom that someone should backstab him like this...

Turn 12: Spy incites revolt in Hurrian and it falls with loss of one cat-o-frag. OK, that's proof that the concept works.

Turn 15: The cats/maces stack is camping outside Sparta. We can probably take it now or wait for one turn and try to incite revolt first. I think we need more maces to complement the cats.

Should be a fun turnset coming up. First come, first served.

popped a great general on first turn. what do we want to do with him? i see two options:

1. create a great medic
2. stick him in a city as a military instructor: which city?

A medic would be sweet with all the mobile warfare we'll be doing.

story of the round:

what happened? did tycoonist:
a) decide to waste his first great general medic by trowing him against a wall of pikemen?
b) accidentally kill him off in a battle to save the realm?
c) fall completely in love with the whole medic bit and decide that one was not enough?
d) get hit so hard by a club that a large chunk of his brain fell out, therefore deciding randomly that 2 is better than one and when it came to medics, the more the merrier?
e) eat a pizza?

well i guess we will find out later...

attacked sparta after reducing defenses. razed with the loss of one cataphract. stack heads back to hurrian to regroup and gather new GG medic (Ollie Cromwell that is)
but before we got back, we encountered this stack:

Alex had been hard at work creating a stack even monty would be proud of. the next turn he attacked in a very futile attempt to restore some pride into his empire. he killed one cataphract and one mace in the entire stack and lost all of his men. just our luck that the cataphract killed was ollie cromwell.

that's right the correct answer was b): accidentally kill him off in a battle to save the realm.

ah well these things happen. i suppose yu guys will berate me for not attaching him to a worthless unit like a chariot that wouldn't fight a battle in a million years. i am prone to these mistakes...

on the other side of this black and menacing cloud there was in fact not one but two silver linings: firstly, alexander had killed off aout half his military, and second we popped another GG, Cao Cao.

we captured and kept knosses:

this was a no losses battle.

we got a great scientist, he popped philo which allowed me to make this trade:

the world map was too big to be posted as images but i will tell you the positions of the nations as if the world wheel was a clock:
from 12 to 1:30 is Persia
from 1:30 to 3:30 is byzantine (us)
from 3:30 to 4:30 is greece
from 4:30 to 7 (including a lot in the centre) is Pacal
from 7 to 8 is rome
from 8 to 10:30 is korea
from 10:30 to 12 is france

our sod in hurrian:

athens defense (pretty shabby):

alex's empire:
