I like random events on (even though I get alot of negative events) simply cause it feels more realistic. Also sometimes I get very good ones (Great people, Free military units) But thats about it.

Combat itself is RNG driven so there's no escaping it. Case in point:

I play with them on, though I agree that a lot of them are just ridiculous in terms of their game-breaking potential. The Bermuda Triangle is the oft-cited example.

Off. Bermuda Triangle/Vedic Aryans have turned me off random events. "The Vedic Aryans seek to destroy your civilization" with your 1 warrior as defense. Really fun. The odds of you surviving are about the odds of :spear:

Sometimes on, sometimes off. There have been a lot of threads concerning this. They can be fun and add variety and spice to the game but they can also imbalance it. Vedic Aryans, Bermuda Triangle (I'd rather have random boiler explosions in individual ships) and sometimes Tower Shield Event for Rome. It certainly could have been implemented better. You'll get a lot of disagreement here.

Any game that involves comparison of tactics (or even same game played by multiple players such as Noble's Club) should have events off. That can skew a game either way. Those games should be as comparable as possible.

I admit that I'll use WB if I get Vedic Aryans. If I'm playing for fun, there's no reason to be dogmatic about reloading when the game comes up with "surprise, you lose" that you can't control.

Hell I go 1 further and on the rare occasion I see an AI die really early I'll look and if it was that event and not a rare early DOW I reload to my last save and check via WB every turn til the event triggers and then I get rid of the Vedic Aryans for the AI.

Random events are fun most of the time, though I have only gotten Vedic Aryans once and have never seen the Bermuda Triangle event. I'm still seeing events that I have not seen before (Age of Muskets, Halberd design, etc.)

I detest random events in any strategy game. I have been turing them off for decades (no exaggeration) in any games that I own. I neglected this in my first BTS game. The Vedic Aryans appeared and killed off two the AIs before being destroyed. I quit that game and deleted the initial game from my hard drive. Then I turned random events off and started a new first BTS game. Random events ---:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

I play with them on. Sure, the Vedic Aryans make me restart some games, but I've never actually had the Bermuda Triangle event. I think they allow me to get more into a game, and make it seem more "real".

It's a Turn Based Strategy game, so no. Some of the events are just too damned strong for or against you. Events that cause auto war... really?

Free shock herp derp, free cover. Or what if your enemy gets that? It also makes comparing in forum games impossible.

And yes, I know combat is based on odds. But at least that requires some kind of thought. Do you want to take a 30% chance of success to take that city or risk most likely tossing away your unit.

What does having your forge burn down when you're building the colossus do besides the game wanting to screw you over? Don't build wonders?

There's already enough random BS in the game. I don't need any more. =p

I wish events were mostly about quests, but meh.

I play with them off more often than i have them on. I was once at war and left myself too exposed. The AI that i was attacking bought someone else to war on me. I would have lost a city or 2 for sure. With their stack a couple tiles away from my city i got the event about someone from the warring AI healing my soldier with the option to bring the war to an end. Was it too powerful? Sure, but i was quite grateful.

I would say that it's marketed as a turn based strategy game but if you leave the events on you get more of an RPG feeling and get a more entertaining game, well for me.

ok for me the most annoying thing about random events is when around 10-20 turns in the game you get this event: "a large number of barbarian archers has appeared near your border" so usually I have to start a new game

I like to have it on as well as huts. I believe part of the game is adjusting to the unexpected and the game can become to much like an"if/then equation." But I agree they can be devastating and if I'm going to post online I'll turn off because it make comparisons impossible.

I was also wondering if anyone plays with the AI's having random personalities. I think it's a bit unrealistic to know who great traders are and who the war mongers are early in the game. Does anyone play that way??

I used to always play with events on but realised they were stopping me moving up levels. Since turning them off I've jumped from Noble to Monarch. I'm considering turning them back on once I've started winning more games because they are fun to play with.

I played only one game with random personalities but forgot I'd checked the box and was taken out fairly rapidly by Gandhi of all people.

Which means possible, lol.

One time I got Aryans next to a hill city where I already had one archer, and chop-whipped 2 more by the time the Aryan stack got there. I was expecting a suicide assault but those smart buggers started marching off looking for less-well-defended cities to take. So I ran 2 of the archers along roads to get to each city before they did, and eventually I had axemen (and one accidental spearman from a warrior build after copper popped) enough to go on the attack. It was a minor distraction but a fun one.

Some other games they do veer off and march on AI cities, sometimes taking the cap and sometimes getting owned by the AI.

If it's on a very early turn and they don't veer off I just watch the city get taken, nothing to be done, follow through the process and restart.

I used to have them enabled, but since trying to improve my game they've been turned off, along with huts, and I can't say I miss them in the slightest. It just means slightly less frustration because I don't have to build that copper mine twice due to the inevitable hurricane destroying it the moment my worker is done. Plus a slave revolt occuring in a beseiged city is just game breaking and, since I run slavery a lot, occurs all the time with events on.
