Rant 1: Laundry
So about 2 months ago the washing machine in our basement (I live in a college house) broke, but we haven't gotten it fixed because we have a cat living illegally in our house and if the landlady finds out, we'd obviously be in trouble. So, you'd think it would be easy enough to call them, take the cat next door for a day, and they'll fix it, but it's not. Last time our washing machine broke (yup, it's already broken once and we haven't been here a year yet), we called and they said it would be fixed by the end of the week. Long story short, they finally fixed it 2 WEEKS LATER, so we can't rely on when they say they're going to do it. Not to mention the other stuff that's broken, like our back door and our deadbolt on the front.
Well, anyway, the moral of that story is I've been doing my laundry at the laundromat a couple blocks away, and yesterday was dollar wash day, so I decided to go. I got all of my clothes in my car in the morning so that I could just stop on my way home from work and not have to waste my time running home and back. However, I forgot my quarters. No big deal, I thought, they have change machines there. Well, both change machines were out of order, and the people working there apparently didn't have any change, so I had to run home with all of my clothes just sitting there in open washing machines to get my quarters. Now, I go to Marquette University, which is right next to the worst part of the city, and the laundromat was filled with non-students, so I really didn't feel comfortable leaving all of my clothes there, but due to them somehow running out of change on the day they KNOW everyone does their laundry, I had to. Thankfully nothing happened, but I was not happy.
Oh and then, I was so frustrated I almost walked into the women's bathroom on accident
Rant 2: Freeloaders/Stupid People
This past Saturday night (Sunday morning I guess), a couple of freshman were out drunk on the streets at like 3am, which is not unusual at all on a college campus. They were only a block away from the well-lit campus housing and fast food places, but despite that, 2 black guys came up to them in a van, jumped out and grabbed them, with one guy holding a gun, and forced them inside the van. They drove up north off of campus right into the heart of the worst crime area in Milwaukee, took the guys to an ATM, and demanded they take cash out. I don't know if they actually got cash or not, but afterward they beat the crap out of both guys, then dropped one guy off in an alley and told him that he better wait there for them to come back or they'd kill his friend. The guy apparently waited there, outside, with no jacket, for 3 hours before he finally left (I'm guessing the robbers took his phone). I still don't know what happened to the other guy, but he made it back to campus as well.
I don't get how people can rationalize stuff like this. Why should you get money for nothing? Same thing with the beggars all over campus. I understand that people can really fall into hard times and get reduced to begging, and I'm fine with giving a dollar, or my change or whatever, but every time I do (which isn't often), they always ask for more. Every time. I had a guy come up to me in the parking lot of Walgreens a couple of months ago as I was leaving and ask if I had a dollar I could spare. I gave him a dollar, but he continued to follow me and kept asking if I had a couple more to spare, even when I said I didn't, and then even accused me of lying! I don't mean to sound condescending, but I gave you a dollar. Go get a job if you want more money. Oh, and then there was the guy that approached my girlfriend and I while we were walking downtown that asked if we could look at his job application, so we did. I have no clue what kind of job it was for, but he definitely either had no intentions of turning it in or had zero chance of getting the job because he basically just scribbled all over the paper illegibly, not even attempting to check or write in boxes. Immediately when my girlfriend looked at it, he asked if we had $12 for the application fee

. We said "We're sorry, we can't help you" and walked away.
Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but it seems like a lot of people in this country expect to just get handed a lot of things, and then if they don't, think they're justified in stealing. That's just not how life should work, IMO.
