Randomly Conquering Monarch 6CC

I was hoping we can redeclare war on Asoka in about 5 - 8 turns - if you think we have a large enough force to do so. We need to try to knock him down, but also really needed. Protection from air units and had few troops left.

I don't think we have a choice but to continue to work on him and then switch to Peter. it is really going to be hard.

I've been having some trouble with Civ4 since I downloaded the new patch. I might not be able to get to this until tomorrow. I am trying to fix the problems I'm having ASAP though so I might play tonight. (v1.52)

Edit: Scratch that. I can play now, just fixed it. :) Since my game is patched atm and I have no idea how to disable it and go back to 1.52 I'm going to play patched. I hope that is okay. End of the game anyways so it shouldn't matter much.

(1) 1981 - Trade gold for incense to mao. Production is so much better than the last time I played.

(2) 1982 - Mao created Apollo.

(5) 1985 - Refrigeration comes in and I head to communism so we can build spies so we can pillage any space mongers aluminum or SS part.

Declare on Asoka and burn Rajshahi.

(6) 1986 - There was only two units in Rangoon last turn but I couldn't attack due to bad odds. This turn he has brought rienforcements.

But that is okay because he left Bangalore lightly defended.

(7) 1987 - Burn Kolhapur

(10) That *f..censored* *a..censored* Asoka landed 4 heli's and 4 artillery right next to our city which is guarded by an infantry and archer.

I'm not sure how to deal with this. We have an infantry right next to the stack that is not yet moved that can attack the stack with 20% odds. The archer in the city can't be upgraded. The infantry north of the city won't reach it in time. We could upgrade the infantry to an SAM to deal with the heli's but we will still lose the city and will probably be better off with the extra two points of strength an infantry has. I feel horrible about this loss :(

In other news. I left the army outside Madras unmoved. The next player can decide whether or not to attack. We could take the city, there is only 5 units guarding, but there would be a lot of casualties. Maybe move on to the next city?

Roster:
Knupp715 - Just Played
Talamane - Up
Greebley - On Deck

I would defend and hope. Attacking out doesn't seem worthwhile.

Note that Gunships CANNOT take the city. You only need to survive the Artillery which will probably go first.

Do move units to defend next turn though.

If we lose the city entirely, all is not lost. We can build a city on other continents and use bombers which would be very nice.

OK, i got it, but i have an SG turnset i am playing now (also AW), so tomorrow nite is the soonest i can play and post.

Asoka takes out all of our defenders, but fails to roll the arty into the city. :smoke: He would rather pillage with his gunships. Sheesh, that's the weediest thing i have ever witnessed an AI do. Gunships and SAMS take out his gunships, and tanks finish off the arty.

I moved our stack to Calcutta, hoping for an easier kill. Hmm, it's lightly defended. With a carrier & fighters, this might have been easier. Take a couple of turns to bomb the defenses down. Ugh, it's on a hill. Sack the artillery. Send in the tanks. Boom.

For the price of a 3 tanks and the arty, not bad. Move the stack back to Lyons. Regroup, heal in the port city. Make peace with Asoka straight up (he would not deal). We revolt to state property. WW was getting v bad. Then in '98, Peter declares war on us! Lands a tiny stack near Marseilles. Taken out with gunships and city defenders. Raze Irkutsk.

Made some deals with Mao. He has fission, though i think no one has built the dreaded Manhattan. There be hydro plants in some of our cities! I had started on medicine to cure our sick cities with hospitals, but decided it would be best to get radio/satellites and get SDI ASAP. We have 1100 or so in the bank, radio in 10 @ 70/20. The destroyers/transports need to be moved from Lyon to Marseilles to land our army on Peter.

Gun ships can't take cities. The weedy part was probably that he went with his artillery first not realizing this fact. I would be willing to bet there is not special code to move the gunships before artillery in this case. It is the only case I can think of that you want to move something before artillery (when attacking a city and one has gunships).

This is why I had hopes we could keep the city. We only had to survive the artillery to do so.

I got it. Got a game or two to play first.

Early: Looking over the empire I notice two problems. One is that we have a windmill on a square that has Aluminum. The second is we have a horse square that has no improvement. It was obviously pillaged and never fixed. One suggestion on improving ones game - do look over the empire when you get a turn. Just because it is toward the end of the game doesn't mean there are things that can be changed. If you want to get fancy you can also do things like rebalance the number of farms, etc.

I move our stack of ships around to get at Peter.

Mid: We get a landing at New York. Most units are exactly 10 squares away. Gunships however can move more than 10 squares A nice feature.

Late: Land troops on Peters island. Send the troops after Baoding.

Baoding is too well protected. F5 shows me the units include 9 gunships and our stack is mostly tanks. Move on to another city Note that it has the deceptive ... Be a nice city to take out, it has tons of boats, but no way we can do so.

Notes:
Our towns are still on the small side. I am not sure if this doesn't mean we did something wrong this game. My guess is that we had too much WW to be big. Still we are losing a lot of resources by being small. Maybe higher culture would have been better.

I don't think we will win this. It is a very hard variant and requires more knowledge or a better start for us to win. I have learned a good bit though if I ever want to try this variant again.

Okay, I opened up the save and was thinking about some things:

We won't win by conquest. That's fairly obvious and has been for a while.

A time victory is possible but I don't think we have the units to do so. If we were to aim for this (which we currently are) we would have to cripple peter to a score at least a few hundred under us. Then move on to China and cripple them to a few hundred points under us. Time would then be close to expiring and hopefully Asoka won't have rebuilt all of his territory and have a higher score than us once again (or launch).

So then I thought, what about space race? If we went to peace with everyone and dedicated all cities to spaceship parts, dedicated research to spaceship techs we just might pull it off.

My guess is that there is about a 5% chance we have enough units to cripple both Peter and Moa to a point where they won't be a problem. Then there is about another 5% chance that Asoka hasn't built the spaceship or rebuilt all his land passing us in score. Then another 5% chance there will be enough time to move on to him.

I haven't played yet and I want to see what you guys think about a space race victory. Chances are slim we'd win but I don't think as slim as a time victory. Comments?

Space Race is impossible. I guess I didn't realize just how little turns are left.

(0) IBT: Win 10 Lose 6

(1) IBT: Win 2 Lose 3

(3) Lose a battleship due to go to bug.

(4) IBT: Lose 7 and just like that our stack in Russia is dead. :(

(5) IBT: Pete made a landing of 8 units but I didn't see it until it attacked New York in the IBT. Luckily he didn't take the city.

(6) Kill 6 of those units.

IBT: Lose 1

(7)

   Wow, I've never seen an AI so high.

Burn that city and guess what, not even a loss!!!

Kill 2.

(8) Kill 2 battleships and a carrier carrying a plane with some good luck from the RNG gods. The razed Russian's city's defenders come out of the woodwork. All 4 of them.

(9) Kill those 4 units.

(10) Petey landed another 4. I left all units unmoved. Good luck the next player.

It sounds like moving the big stack next to the city was ill-advised. I wonder if I would have done better by staying away from it and going after another city or if I just couldn't get enough troops for Peter.

As for losing, my feeling at the start was that this was the most likely outcome. A histographic victory was probably possible if we all knew the game better - I know that I made some errors this game and have seen others. We are playing at Monarch, and it was not an epic game which meant fewer turns for attacking. I think the variant is doable, but not easy.

Problem is I don't see much we can do other than twiddle our thumbs until we lose. I doubt we can build up enough troops in the time remaining to damage the AI enough to get them below us in score. Might as well finish up though. Turns will probably be pretty fast.

I got it.
