Rat 09 - going for conquest

Apologies for taking so long. I have been kind of busy and was playing this slowly. Well I finished 6 turns total.

On turn 3 we sent a very large attack force after Mansa's nearest city. It was covered by SAM's but still got bombed to close to 1/2 hp. We were then attacked and lost 10 or so units when next to the city. On our attack back we burned 4 artillery and about 3 tanks to do enough collateral damage to take out the city and replace it with our own. Including the bombers we lost who were shot down, it probably cost us 20 units to take the city. We killed maybe 15 of the enemy including some stealth bombers. At that cost it will be prohibitively expensive to take out Mansa (though each town will weaken him so the cost will go down eventually.

In any case here is the position. If Mansa decides to run us off the continent he may very well succeeed.

One thing I don't like as much about civ 4 is the "sit in your towns and defend" stategy is a bit too powerful. No coming from behind in this game. The game is much more fluid when offense is stronger as with C3C. Several of the Civ 4 games I have played the AI's position stagnates - not because of poor AI, but because it is too easy to defend.

Not that I think we deserved to win this game. I don't feel we played very well. We still have a lot to learn.

Check the cities. I was paying attention to the war, so the probably need further adjustment.

Greebley, are you going to play the rest of the turns? Because I don't see any save attached

I'm gonna be gone a few days (be back monday probably), going to be out of town for a short vacation. I'll check the threads in here at my friend's, but I don't know if I'll be able to play. Just a FYI :) I'll be able to play monday night for sure, though.

Well I intended the attach the save. Could have sworn I did, but it is clearly missing. I will attach tonight.

I think I need more practice at modern combat. I am not sure if there is a way to keep the losses down. Being behind in tech, it may just be impossible.

Modern armor will help.

Xarathas - up, on Monday

this game is currently still on patch 1.09, but IMHO we can upgrade to 1.52 if everyone is ok. Xarathas can chose whichever version to play. I will then play 1.52

okay.. playing on 1.52.

Bit short on time, so my summaries will be short and simple and just noting the main things.

Turn 1 - Fixed a starvation problem in Circei, other cities looks okay to me from the city status screen.

Okay, I think I see one of the major problems that we have currently... we should have more than enough forces to hold on, and possibly make an advance, but our main problem is that we don't have a single medic unit! With a few of those, our lives would be so much easier. As it is right now, everything's taking a year to heal.. with this many bombers and fighters, even if a couple gets intercepted every turn we should be able to bombard incoming troops with ease. Just need to make sure we try to use full health bombers as often as possible. I don't think I've ever seen a bomber shot down at full health.

Going to make a bunch of medics as fresh troops come in...

Turn 3 - Got a few medics in each city, troops are healing much faster now. Incoming forces were taken care of for now.

Going to make Medina the next target. Bombers will start bombarding.

I noticed one of the destroyers had the medic ability.. gonna keep him in the city to help heal units (does that work? heh, never tried).

Going to move a worker or two over to that other continent. Could at least use railroads in between the two cities.

Turn 4 - Stack of modern armor shows up at the door (via transport, from medina? it seems), bomb it to half health and the copters wipe it. Let's hope they do that a few more times, that'd make the conquest much easier.

Frederick completes Space Elevator.. oi. He's only 2 parts away to boot.

Hmm.. I'm gonna have to finish this tomorrow.. sorry for the delay guys.

Turn 5 (or 6?) - Composites done, since nothing can really help us much (well, there's genetics for + health, and Refridgeration for +1 sea move.. but not really all that helpful when the game could end anytime) so I turned off science, set culture to 30%, and left the rest as tax. We could use some upgrades. Attacking army now on the way towards Medina.. wish them luck. They'll need it.

Turn 6 - I realized that.. due to the patch, we were given a timewarp, apparently. As the last saved game was 1971 AD, yet when I started the game it was at 1951 AD. Hmmmmmm. I reloaded the original save to double check.. nope, didn't reload the wrong save, that's for sure. Sweet, time-travel patch!

Anyway, Arty charges our attacking stack via rails. No casualty but will take a turn to heal. Gonna forward pillage all the roads on the way there. Can always build it back later.

Turn 7 - Advance, pillaged all the roads in the squares in front with copters.

Turn 8 - Our advancing stack is bombarded, but took minimal damage. I decided to move onto the hill before I heal. It looks like Jet fighters can shoot down a full health bomber.. so I'm spending most of the money in upgrading bombers to stealth bombers. I upgraded a few of the armors in the attacking stack to modern armor earlier also.

More road pillaging.

Turn 9 - bombarded again, and 2 mech infantries came out of Medina to attack us (yay?). We lost 1 normal tank (not sure why the tank defended..) but our modern armor killed the other. Sent a mech inf to dispose the surviving one. A fair sized attacking stack shows up to the east (~12 units), but nothing a bunch of bombers and our defenders couldn't take care of.

Turn 10 - Bombarded the crap out of Medina with our bombers. Dropped pretty much everything to half health and the city down to 2% defense. Medina was razed with a few casualties (2 tanks, 2 stealth bombers.. apparently even full health stealth bombers can be shot down by jet fighters. mean lil things).

That's the end of my turns. Before you move on Rat, you may wish to do a few unit upgrades. You got the cash to do about 2.

Good luck!

Do we have computers and Robotics (I think it is) for Modern Armor and Stealth Bombers? That is what we really want. If we don't have those techs, then we shouldn't turn off science. Having just composites isn't enough.

I discovered this since I last played.

Pre-Turn
will I be the one who has the last set of turns here?
but at least we should go down in glory...
it is already 1961AD, a little weird, but no issue

1. 1962AD
Bagdhad and Basra will be our next targets

2. 1963AD
some units show up, but surely they will be shredded
take out 1 MA with gunship, by the way changed civic to nationalism so we get the happy bonus from rax
advance towards Baghdad

3. 1964AD
take out another MA with gunship
honestly, the modern warfare is very very hard to follow, very cluttered all things here
bombard and raze Baghdad

4. 1965AD
on we go, set some settlers, we need to settle to get our front forward so that our bombers can follow
raze Basra after bombing and attacking with wounded units, we need to be a bit faster here
let some troops heal, move a few forward, Mansa's response has been slightly quiet so far

see that Frederick needs only 1 more space parts, well...

IT Mansa now responds and attacks, takes out 3 units while we take out 2

5. 1966AD
found a new city on the way to Mansa's core, our score is almost 5000 now
take out the new city of Taodeni
move forward towards Walata

IT Elisabeth get a little cranky and cancels some deal and a UN vote shows up

6. 1967AD
check defense in Wallata, not so fearsome as well
let's head for it
bomb down defenses and move forward in several stacks to divert the bombers

7. 1968AD
we lose the vote for General Secretary as everyone votes for Frederick

we defeat 6 units in Walata and the size 21 city is gone

decide to split our troops to advance north (Kumbi Saleh) and east (Kufah)

8. 1969AD
we lose 3 units to Mansa on the counter
found another city to move forward and keep the AI from claiming the land as well
move forward so next turn we'll be able to attack both cities
bomb their defenses, also take out a settler trio

IT Mansa seems pretty beat as all he can muster is a meagre MI attack and that loses

9.1970AD
take out Kufah and Kumbi Saleh for minor losses (2 gunships)

found yet another city on the way to Mansa's capital
he has 7 core cities on the main continent and another 4 overseas.

I am surprised that nobody built the SS yet.

the front, though very messy

I suggest to continue two-fold attack, on stack heading east and the other going for the capital. I used the stealth bombers to first take down the defense and prior to the attack reduce the health of units. It works very well and we suffer hardly any losses on attack. The major casualties are from exposed units, but that is minor as well.
Maybe once we took all of Mansa's core cities, we make peace and go immediately after Frederick. I don't know what happened to Mansa's spaceship, he was so close, seems with war he stopped building it.

But, honestly, I think we will lose any turn to Frederick.

Greeb - we have all the military techs there is to get, except for nukes.

Regarding Frederick, I think we need to declare war on him now. We don't need to attack him right away, but we need to do everything we can to slow down his science and production. Hopefully he doesn't have fusion yet.. it's very possible. Anyone remember seeing any great scientists born lately? :) If you suddenly see Frederick pull a scientist out of his arse, that probably means he got Fusion. Maybe Mansa already has it, but I don't recall seeing him finish the engine yet. Even if he already has fusion, with any luck he'd be stupid enough to stop production of it to make military. I've seen it happen before, so it's worth trying :) Yeah, having Frederick along in the mix could be hard, but it's better than just letting him be free to research and make that last part.

you are right, Xarathas. maybe Dimy, simply declare on Frederick, we should be well equipped to deal with his units as well. And maybe he switches to war mode to never finish the space parts. as I said, we have no chance, so let's use it...

I agree too. Declare and try to do some damage too thim. If he goes into war mode we may have more time.

Take out that town near last hope if he still owns it. That may do it.

[Edit: If he does go into war mode, expect a lot of units - he hasn't fought anyone in a long time.

lurker's comment: excellent have really enjoyed this thread, I'm amazed you guys have lasted this long..well played, with lessons learned here the next should be a doozy
