Rat 10 - Revenge of the warmongers

You probably have tried this already, but I would try to uninstall, delete all existing directories for civ4, then redownload the patch again and re-apply it and see if it helps.

My sympathies though - it is a real bummer that the new patch doesn't work for you.

My game was more unstable once I installed the patch, lucky these few days it's better.

I think alt-tabbing makes the situation worse. I close the whole game after a turnset. Multiple repeated loading of games seem to make the situation much worse.

Dimy, hope you can solve the issues, I would hate to see you drop from the games.

Turn 1 - not much went on. Killed a few troops inside Cumae, will probably take it over next turn. Moved the Caravel sitting around in the Egyptian ocean towards Cyrus' borders in case he tries to sneak a few galleys by us.

Turn 2 - Captured Cumae, gave it back to the Romans. Not really a city worth keeping. In danger of losing Neapolis, as our two wounded calvary are the only troops in there and there's a Swordsmen, half dead pike & a horseman attacking it next turn at least. I decide to risk staying in there to heal to see if we can fend them off. Worth a shot, as retreating doesn't guarantee the safety of our cossacks at that spot.

3) no luck, even lost a fight that we should have 75% chance of winning :p oh well, they will be avenged. Economy came in, revolution to Free Market, Representation, Emancipation. Gonna be 3 turns worth of anarchy :p ouch. I want to build the statue of liberty in our capital, so Free Speech's gonna have to wait a bit. I think we're good on money in the short run (we can always sell techs tot he lesser nations.., so I added the great merchant into the capital.

Turn 5 - Revolution ended. Only have 1 unhappy city and that's the newly created fishing village. Need to send over some missionaries sometime in the near future. Astronomy in 7. Cyrus sent a sizable attacking force to Cumae, but our cossacks made short work of them. Gonna heal up and march towards their big cities. Since we no longer need happy police, I deleted a few warriors.

Turn 8 - Caesar peaced Cyrus. Which is fine I suppose, now I won't have to leave behind any units to defend Caesar's cities. I think for right now, we should just raze/pillage, until we get a more sizable force to the continent to both hold & attack. Ignore their crappy cities up front.

Turn 9 - Guilds to Mao for Engineering.

Turn 10 - On second thought, Gordium might not be a bad city to take and hold. It's a coastal city, got a gold there too. 5 cossacks are parked right outside (might get catted next turn..) & 2 more 2 steps behind. Next guy can decide what to do with that city :) If you don't take it, please at least raze it.

Good luck

we're really a research power, this will keep us ahead in techs and thus in better units.
I would also keep Gordium as a starting point for the campaign against Cyrus. I suggest to keep the momentum for a while longer until WW hits us badly. Then we might want to make peace for a while to build up troops again.

We might want to consider state property later on with our ever expanding empire.

Turn 339 (1545 AD)

Turn 340 (1550 AD)

Notes:
I also built some infrastructure, observatories and such. We have six Cossacks in the city. Once the Infra is done, we can go back to cossacks and soon rifles as well that will make the pikes less deadly.

Cyrus for sure has plenty of units.

Good call for peace and I like it that I can see a lot of religious spreading, more happiness all around.

Got it, here's my turn 0 report

**Foreign trade check

View attachment 112745

Going to try to improve our GPT a bit.

Cancel crab to Hatty for 5 gpt
Re-sign crab to Hatty for 8 gpt

Fish to Mao for 8 gpt

Fish to Genghis for Dye
Ivory to Genghis for 7 gpt

Ivory to Monty for 9 gpt

Ivory to Cyrus for 5 gpt

Much better

**City management check

Not going to name everything but here are a few changes

Humming along making minor changes when I came across this

View attachment 112748

OK who's the wiseguy who started on a forge with 1 base hammer + 2 bad specialists...
Might as well switch to worker @ 7 turns he can do something useful

Ditto for Diamond Colony also building forge @ 3 base hammers just going to start longbowman

Rostov is building forbidden palace, I think this isn't necessary unless we're planning to move palace to the other continent
otherwise state property will take care of much of the problem if our empire gets too big
It's our top 5 production city atm so gets the nod for more cossacks

Btw our best production cities are not necessarily our best science cities by a long shot...like Yaroslavl' for example is in the bottom half of our cities in terms of science and has heroic epic...so observatory isn't a priority whereas cossacks, at 4 turns apiece, is. We gotta restart the war while our UU is still a very advanced unit

Switch to harbors in a couple cities that already have a trade route of +2

Our gpt is -9 after some minor tile reworking

**Units check

Stop ALL worker actions because of stuff like this:

View attachment 112746

That worker is going to spend 9 turns building a farm that can't be worked by any city and that isn't for purposes of spreading irrigation comeon

Generally I think there's too much farming going on, like those tundra tiles by Orenburg above. They currently have watermills on them and if I had to change it I'd much rather opt for cottages, but probably leave it alone for now. I mean that city is going to work ocean tiles and everything else on god's green earth before ever considering working a farmed tundra and it's not even working all ocean tiles now. Biology isn't a super priority as far as I know and still they won't be very useful farmed

We have 6 cossacks, 5 in that city we captured from Cyrus and 1 in galleon. Definitely need more before thinking of restarting the war
We might also want another Galleon to help build a consistent bridge to Cyrus; we have 3 atm

**Tech check

We're still solidly ahead in tech, last time I played none of the other civs had paper and several of them STILL don't have it  By the same token many of the civs still don't know each other
Nothing to trade techwise and I decide not to sell any, most I can get atm is 280 gold from Monty and cheapest tech I can sell is paper

Rifling is due in 3 turns, haven't decided what to go for next...Scientific method then physics(great scientist) or communism(Kremlin)? Corporation (but it obsoletes our GL)?

**Civics check

Currently running representation/free market/free religion/bureaucracy/emancipation

We aren't making that much use of specialists to really benefit from representation and I don't plan to stunt growth in cities just for that. at least it has low civic upkeep

Statue of Liberty would've given representation a big boost but we haven't built it and capital (which has it queued after observatory) is like fortysomething turns away from completing it

I consider revolting to universal suffrage and free speech, but hold off on it because the costs appear to outweigh the benefits in the short term

Bureaucracy / free speech: +2 gold we get from towns w/free speech add up to like 30 extra gold right now, plus the decreased civic cost makes it around +36 (not taking banks and stuff into account which we don't have much of yet) or so but capital is generating +45 extra right now due to the +50% from bureaucracy, plus there's the +50% production..soon though as we get more towns that'll change.

As for representation vs universal suffrage, pretty much similar cost/benefit rationale because suffrage has higher civic upkeep, and +1 hammer will become much more useful once we get more towns, and hurrying production through gold will become pivotal once we get communism (we ARE going to get the kremlin no?)

Turn up research to 90% for a bit

OK onto the game, here's the save btw View attachment 112749

EOT Turn 0:
Whaling Station finishes theatre, go for harbor @ 20 turns
Capital finishes Observatory, Statue of Liberty was queued, but go for Galleon @ 3 turns
Mao completes notre dame

Turn 1:
Mostly worker actions, going to chop some trees we're not using
Move galleon with one cossack
Missed this turn 0, going to switch some working tile in capital with the other city might as well inrease our benefit from bureaucracy while we can

EOT Turn 1:
Rifling comes in, science back down to 80%
Choices are scientific method, corporation and chemistry. I opt for SM. Corporation obsoletes great lighthouse so no immediate benefit, and chemistry gives us grenadiers which we don't need because none of the other civs will have riflemen for quite some time, ditto for frigates

Going to move things along more quickly now report-wise

Turn 2-3: Mostly worker actions (ongoing)

EOT Turn 3:
Moscow builds Galleon, Rifleman next
Yaroslavl builds Cossack, Rifleman next
Caesar builds Hagia Sophia

Turn 4: Galleons are lined up for optimal unit transfer

EOT Turn 4:
Crab Island builds lighthouse, worker @ 9 turns
Vladivostok builds Granary, library @ 45 :p
Gordium finishes theatre, eh...Courthouse@90.

Some of these will just be goldrushed later

Turn 5: more of the same

EOT Turn 5:
Peace treaty w/Cyrus runs out
Rostov builds Cossack, Rifleman
Yeka builds Cossack, Rifleman

EOT Turn 6:
Yakutsk finishes worker, since it's got a base hammer of 1, I just set it to research
Novgorod builds university, Cossacks next
Yaroslavl builds Rifleman, Cossacks next

EOT Turn 7:
Scientific Method in, tough choice but I go for Communism next @ 6
Orenburg builds granary, library @ 22

EOT Turn 8:
Moscow builds RIfleman, detour a bit for bank @ 5
Yaroslavl builds Cossacks, another

EOT Turn 9:
Petersburg builds COssacks Rifleman next

Turn 10:
Gordium now has 10 Cossacks and 2 Rifleman, we're getting ready for another war
Trade options can now be modified

Cancel Ivory to Genghis for 7g/Re-sign same deal for 8g
Re-sign Ivory to Monty for 10g instead of 9g
Re-sign Ivory to Cyrus for 11g instead of 5g (we'll war against him soon but why not squeeze every bit out of him while we can)
Some civs have also built up some $$, so..
Code of Laws to Genghis for 250
PAper to Monty for 380g, lots of other civs have it now

Here I made a bit of an oversight, after the sale Monty turned from Annoyed to Cautious and he was willing to trade his resources..well, I already gave ivory for 10gpt before that so that can't be cancelled for a while. No big deal because the gold is something and we aren't in dire need of any of his resources now

So after all that here's our empire:

View attachment 112747

And I haven't counted the numbers since my turn 0 but switching civics might be worthwhile soon if not now

GL :)

save

Pre-Turn
since we just renegotiated a deal with Cyrus, war will have to wait for another 10 turns

well Yakutsk isn't really useful but we can make missionaries there in 48 turns

also revolt to frees speech, it really looks good

1.1605AD
back from revolt, still get communism in 4 at 80% science

2. 1610AD
check and Caesar will be willing to declare on Cyrus again, we should go for that before we declare

3. 1615AD
3 more units are ready to be sent over to the other continent

4. 1620AD
zzz

5. 1625AD
communism is in, decide for physics and the free Great Scientist
do no revolt for now, maybe once we have more cities oversas

6. 1630AD
bank in Moscow improves our income

7. 1635AD
zzz

8. 1640AD
we really have very few workers

9. 1645AD
spear Islam to Yekatarinburg

10. 1650AD
oh no, I spot Cyrus having a caravel at out eastern sea, but lucky caravels can't tears the fishing nets
send one of our galleons there
There is an Egyptian galley, guess they want to claim that northern land

we can now cancel the deal with Cyrus and declare war
I would do so even this turn. However left this for Xarathas, so you can plan the campaign properly
don't forget to pull Caesar into this war as well

physics is done in 3, would go for chemistry and biology for the growth boost

Turn 0 -

Paper, Guilds, 240 gold to Caesar to declare war on Cyrus. I'm going to wait a few turns to declare ourselves so that Caesar gets the brunt Cyrus' force. Should save us a few units.

Revolt to Universal Sufrage. We don't have a whole lot of specialists and don't need the happiness. Could use some more productive cities, and we can buy buildings in cities that can't make any (our fishing villages, basically)
Turn 4 -

Physics in. Corporation next. Got great scientist, built academy in moscow.

Pisae captured by Romans.

Bought courthouse in Gordium.

Turning down science to 70% for a bit to get some cash to buy other buildings. making 94 gold a turn at 70%.. :)

War Declared.

Turn 5 -

Bought courthouse in St. Pete

Turn 7 -

Sold Banking to Caesar for 530 gold. Bought market in Yakutsk (happiness issues there with war weariness).

Persepolis Captured.

Turn 8 - Corporation done. Chemistry next, beelining for Infantry. Marching on west of Persepolis. I'll let Caesar suicide his troops on that Persian city to the east of Persepolis... it's on a hill.

Jail bought in Novgorod.

Turn 9 - counter attack on Persepolis.. nothing much worth of note.

Turn 10 -

Bactra captured.. it's nice that both Bactra and Pesepolis came with their own courthouse :) Persepolis also have the Oracle & Academy to boot.

Lol.. I just noticed that Cyrus has a Pikeman with commando. Never seen that before. I'll leave that one for the next person to see :) I suggest taking it out with a rifle before it skewers one of our horses out in the open.

good call to switch to US for rushing buildings. I guess WW will hit the roof pretty soon. However, suggest to try and take out Cyrus, if we can. Even if that means running lux very high for a few turns.

We might want to revolt to state property once city maintenance will be an issue. We will surely need to have that civic in the long run.

And for the extended wars we have, we might want to get Rushmore and any other type of happy late wonders.

I don't think we would ever need to switch to state property. Just build the FP on the 2nd continent. SoL would be nice too(I hope we're not too late on this one), think about this - 1 free specialist in every city. Make all of those free specialists merchants.. money problem solved :) We could run little or no science for a few turns to money rush a good half of it.

I don't think we'll make Versailles unfortunately as many has had divine right for ages.

We should definately be able to take Cyrus out. I'd suggest not keeping every city and raze a good half of them. Just keep the good ones so we don't have to leave troops in every city to defend and take away from our attacking stack too much.

Notes:
I started up the Forbidden Palace on the new continent.
I also started a settler. There was good land near Tarsus, but I didn't like the AI placement of cities. I think we can afford another city in that area.

Including a picture of the area for the city and the current captured Persian lands.

Rat10_AD1690a.jpg

Rat10_AD1690.jpg

One final thing, I think we should start planning a war vs Egypt in the next 10 turns. She is ahead in tech. If we knock her down we slow down tech overall. Persia is badly damaged and in 2-3 turns will have 2 junk cities so we can start sending our Cossacks elsewhere keeping about 1/2 to 1/3 to finish off Cyrus.

fine progress on the Persian front. I also agree to take out Egypt next. We should keep Caesar on our side as long as possible + he is pretty low in score.

Maybe we can drag someone into the war as well, generally wars nicely slow down the AI.

I still think we might consider state property at one point in time.

I'm really enjoying following this game. I had recently settled on Catherine as my favorite civ and seeing her played like this is amazing. I was planning on moving up from Warlord to Noble but after seeing this game in progess, I decided to try a couple of tricks you used. I never would have learned to trade extra resources for GPT if I hadn't read this thread.

Greebley, I love how you post your summaries.
Dimy, sorry to hear about the computer troubles.

ThERat, you don't happen to have a link to the previous 9 Rat games do you?
