Lose 10hp archer army against 3hp warrior on mountain?
:cry: well, maybe we are lucky enough to get another MGL

Where are we heading after changing government? Are we heading for the GL techs (bottom of the tech tree?). I think we should as there are few techs that would help our military without resources. We better get to the next age to get more luck with saltpeter and mameluks.
 
Early: Anarchy Ends.

Mid: Get Philosophy. Start Classical Education.
A town was planted right next to Jenne by boat. I attack with 3 Archers and a Warrior. It comes down to the Warrior when I lose 2 of the Archers. Raze the city for 125 gold.

Late: Meet the Spanish (settler). They have Iron and Elephants.
Build Nguigmi.

Notes:
I am building a Hardy Pioneer for the Jungle and 2 Pioneers for the Southmost part of our lands. I suggest we complete these otherwise every civ will show up with settlers and we have to fight many. It is looking like we own the last free land on the continent.

The 3 dots on the map should prevent the AI from trying to settle.

agree that we need to settle fast before every other Civ shows up. I hope I can achieve this

It still doesn't sound as if we have many battles to fight though, which is good.
 
I think in RaR the AI makes a ton of money due to the science cap. Ottomans have a lot of cash at hand already even during my turns

early:
get army with the first attack to take out the Spanish settler pair
form archer army
Ottoman now start to attack with camels..lose an archer but beat up some enemy units
found Zinder
manage to raze Izmit and almost lose archer army in the process (it's a really weak army)

middle:
enemy comes in bigger numbers and we need to stop razing campaign for the time being
get classical education and mysticism and found Tessaoua

Ottoman's Bursa that is nearby finishes the Silk Road and Spani shows up with elephants :eek:
promptly lose 2 TG's and an archer, decide to move back

late: we're on retreat, get mythology, founded Maraoi
Nguigmi got a shrine so we can fill the culture gap

I am trying to get Timbuktu to be higher on shields so we can build the GL there
I rather our capital builds military

Our capital is on 10spt and high grow since we can't get to 20spt
We still can found a few cities and Jenne will produce a settler in 6 that is meant for the jungle
Poetry is due next turn, then we have 2 more techs to build the GL

I would then head for bronze to get better defenders
I guess we need to wait all the way for war camels to be able to attack, archers are not good enough

In my turn set:

I meet French on our gold hill in the southern tip, could see border of France through a channel.

Diffa defensive went insanely hard because of our low attack, low HP archers. they can't even pin down a regular elephant without catapult help. Sometimes I even used TG to eliminate red-lined elephants.

I only allow enemy elephant to enter the archery range (two tiles from Diffa) before my attack, but Ottoman spears and Mujihads enters the scene while Spanish elephant drains our blood.

In the end, I lose both of my archer armies (one gained in the battle) attacking invading elephants, Diffa empty and the morale of Malinese army went to zero.

Even if we have elephant or horses near our start in this game, we still can't compete with enemy elephant hordes.

Better luck next time.

The Save
 
that's some bad luck.

I actually tried from my save onwards but went for iron working and defense 3 units in between and had no problem to hold our front city. In fact it was hardly harassed. I positioned our stack with cats 1 tile N of our city and took out a lot of enemy units
Well, such is the luck of the RnG...

so, are we trying one more time or is time running out for you, plarq?
 
I guess I would rather start from scratch if we can.

I will be away from the computer this weekend, but am fine with whatever you decide, but my preference would be to play another Mali start. We have only spent about a week on the game so we don't lose much.
 
yes, I favor a new start as well...selectively continuing with good saves isn't really my style...

Since Greebley isn't able to play this weekend, I will roll a new start Sunday morning

The start looks decent. I went for archery and domestication as well, next turn we will get to see whether we have iron.

We have an archer army already that can defend against the two foes we currently face.
I wiped out all of Arabs initial contingent :) That's what gave us the army. The army can now prevent pillagers from entering our crucial land. Currently that Roman spear seems to go for the bananas but is scared of the archer army.

I would keep the second city on settler duty and now make our techs towards dynasticism. I guess this time we want to go for construction straight after dyna before heading for the GL

plarq, since Greebley is away this weekend, you can play your turns. I played 40 turns to make sure all is well, we could continue with 15/20 depending on the action we face
