Lautaro/Mapuche [16] (19-3) First post y’all, so don’t lynch me! Been watching this thread and thought I would contribute. From what I’ve seen, Lautaro is maybe the easiest Civ to befriend early game (apart from Gilgabro, obvs). He just wants your lil cities to stay loyal, and then he’ll be your mate. That’s pretty easy to achieve in the anceint or classical era if you don’t go forward-settling any -20 squares. And once that friendship is declared, poof! there goes Lautaro’s one good bonus, declaring war during a a Golden Age. And since he doesn’t have anything else going for him, I can’t see how he is higher than e.g. Monty, who’s only got 15.

Trajan/Rome [20] (19+1) Rome is my favourite Civ to play as, so maybe I’m biased here. He gets simple but very effective bonuses, which he doesn’t have to plan or strategise for. And the Legion is, IMO, in the top 3 best Unique Units: arrives early, deals major damage, and can be made even more dangerous (Oligarchy). Whether intentionally or not, the AI seems to grasp these simple bonuses and always does well as Trajan in my games.

Gorgo/Greece [11] (10+1) Unpopular opinion: personally, I'd rather see Pericles than Gorgo spawn in my games. If Pericles is looking like he'll snowball (which he often does), I know that I can always beat him up easily, or destroy his City States to neuter his 'Surrounded by Glory' bonus. Gorgo, on the other hand, tends to build a decent military to defend herself, which synchronises nicely with her 'Thermopylae' bonus too. I'm also 99% sure that – for some reason – she is programmed to rush Military Science: several times, I've seen her hit back out of nowhere with Cavalry Corps while I'm still waddling around with vanilla Musketmen and Crossbows. Ouch.

Good rainforest adjacencies are easily used by the AI which is a point in bis favour, but don't help when you're intent on kamikazeing your empire to death.

Saladin/Arabia [15] (14+1) IMO, Saladin poses the biggest threat of a religious victory. For most faith-focussed civs, their only hope of winning a religious victory is to catch the human player unawares. But if you realise what's happening, you can easily invade them with superior troops because they'll be so far behind in the science tree. Arabia is the one exception, because on diety it usually takes a human player until the reniassance to catch up with his science-per-turn output. This makes stopping his RV much harder

But if you spawn away from him, he often snowballs and storms ahead in science & culture. I've only seen the AI threaten a toursm victory as three or four leaders, and Pedro is one of them.

Dido/Phoenicia [1] [4-3] About the only thing the Dido AI does well is settle unflippable coastal cities on her home continent. I doubt she's taking that into consideration - the AI settles some horrible cities but it is what it is. Doesn't often take advantage of the Government Plaza, specifically the bonus to trade route capacity and +50% production towards subsequent districts, until later in the game. She was building this thing around the Renaissance era last I saw her in one of my games. Her unique boat can't coastal raid, so she builds a ton of them and has nothing to do with them. Dido has a nice set of bonuses, but you wouldn't know observing the AI.

Builds Theater Squares and the buildings (smart move, the Acropolis is top tier), stacks mega culture (by AI standards), and has the extra envoys to be annoying. Although I can't see what he runs, it's impossible to screw up the extra wildcard slot, right?

Peter/Russia [4] (7-3) I held off on downvoting him again for a bit, but it's time. Yes he gets an early religion, but all that means is that he will take a terrible belief (warrior monks or divine inspiration) which couples with his tundra start to keep his cities small and worthless. Yes he gets a lot of great people and that can be an inconvenience, but he doesn't actually do anything with any of them... take a walk through his lands and you'll see hordes of GWAMs standing around with nowhere to put their works, so it's not like they're doing him any good. What he ends up with are a bunch of tiny cities that can't grow enough to build theater squares, very little production, and a big ol' target on his back. Being an annoyance is not the same as being any good, and it's not like his AI does anything to make him annoying anyways - that's just the OP Lavra.

I lost only my second Deity game yesterday (humble brag), when Frederick sniped me with a Religious Victory during the Renaissance (not so humble brag). As angry as this made me, I was curious to see how he had done it, so I 'one-more-turned' to investigate his empire. He had a solid core of four high population cities, all of which had what looked to be +5 adjacency Hansas. And he had managed to use that production to build *all* of the major Religious wonders (Mahabodhi Temple, Kotoku-in, Hagia Sophia, and Meenakshi Temple). Seriously impressive stuff. Nor was he falling behind on Science either, as he was making a respectable 110 per turn. TL;DR: on Deity, Barbarossa makes very good use of his Hansas, even for something as counter-intuitive as RV.

Pachacuti/Inca [12] (15-3) I've never rated Pachacuti. More times than I can remember, the map generator has dumped him in the middle of the desert or plains, or even by the coast. In these situations, he is essentially a vanilla Civ. And when he does spawn in mountains, it's not like he builds Aquaducts is it. So he rapidly hits his Housing cap, meaning he can't work any of those mountain tiles or put his huge food surplus to use. To top it off, his unique unit is terrible. Never achieves anything of consequence in my games.

Dido/Phoenicia [2] 1+1 I have never seen Dido eliminated early or even mid-late game, opposite to many left. Very rich in AI's hands, that leads often to situation, when Dido eliminates others. Fe. my last game Dido alone killed Egypt and Ottomans. Why so low score? being usually behind in science and culture in late stage doesn't justify it, as most of the civs are weak at teching
