I think that the patch improved some of the mistakes they made in 1.17. It's a nice patch and I voted "Everyone Should Install it" Of course if they want to make the game better they'd have to make alot more improvements.

I haven't seen it mentioned much, but the effects of We Love the King Day, Courthouses, and Police Stations has GREATLY reduced corruption in the remote cities. If there are no improvements, they still produce only one shield, but as soon as they grow and improve they become very useful new cities. This is something that many people asked be addressed with the patch, and I really think it's been done in a way that's both fair and fun.

I gave the 1.21 patch an 8. I'm not quite the Napoleon most of you are so I saw my ability drop from a winner at Monarch to Warlord. I'll get the hang of it. Yes corruption mod rocks. AI is smarter. Still trying to figure out how the Bab archers were able to defeat all my Persian Imps. I'm still learning to build my score. Generally I build a cool empire. Spending to much time building and not enough Attilla the Hun. The AI still does the tech trade and map trade things way to quick. Still no bugs as yet. Gotta do it.:)

I also gave it an 8. I've only played with the new patch for about 3 hours, but i have no complaints. This is unusual for me. Maybe I need to go play some more...

v1.17f added some nice little features into the game but it also messed up a lot of things. v1.21f fixed all (or most) of the problems caused by v1.17f and gave it a nice touch-up. Good work, Firaxis :goodjob: (but I still want to be able to make proper scenarios, so you're not off the hook yet)!

BTW I gave this patch a 9.

The patch corrects lots of problems -- the game somehow seems boring to me. Thinking there would be more diplomacy, alternate stratigies by AI -- most games are very similar.

Love it if:
*Barbarians offered services as vassals could and/or coould assimilate into empire

*Could ask countries to cancel treaties -- and more trading options -- could ask countries to cancel embargo, etc ... form a league "mutual alliance" -- like Nato, with several nations.
Very limited options.

*Espionage is too expensive & too limited.

*Should be easier to form worker groups and armies -- spend
most of time in later games moving units around. Should be able to form army groups, not just armies.

*Options in Alpha Centauri were better
1. artillery units at advantage from height
2. if you defeated a unit in a stack other units would take collateral damage
3. elite units had movement bonus
4. More options for diplomacy
5. More random events!

*Earthquakes, floods, plagues?

The game engine is improved -- still, the concept need some new life.

This patch currently gets a 5 from me.... would have been a zero if the option was available... your wondering why? Because the moment I installed the patch the game stopped working. I double click the Civ3 icon nothing happens other than a bit of hard drive noise, no error message, but equally no game!

And before anybody asks, yes I do own a genuine CD. I was one of the mugs who went out and got the game before it's price collapsed.

And yes I have tried totally uninstalling and re-installing.

Email me at vonotar@hotmail.com if you have any idea what the solution is.

I gave it a dissappointed :(

1.17 fixed a fair few probs for me, but 1.21f has brought some back - and a REALLY annoying new one.

If I start a new game, the turn that first allows me to choose my first science goal reboots my machine. Fortunately, the Autosave manages to save the end of turn first - I never had this prob with any other patch - or even the original unpatched game.

Oh well, there are some good things I suppose. I'm pleased they've finally eased a little on the corruption and starting positions / terrain feel much more varied.

Has anyone else experienced the auto-reboot problem - usually at 3950bc ?

Sorry to hear about your problem. Still fun here. Smart___ AI makes it tougher though. A must download/install.:)

I think its pretty good, but one thing I noticed is that it takes longer before you can kill your citizens in despotism to quickly build an improvement or unit. Has any one else noticed this or is it just me?

I can honestly say that this patch allowed me to begin my Civilization addiction anew...

I remember receiving the game and being dissapointed after the first night of playing...it was just so radically different and didn't seem as polished as Civ 2 was (kind of like a rush job...just pretty graphics but no substance)...

Anyway, I really enjoyed my game playing as the Indians...my cultural imperialism was supreme and I won a diplomatic victory for the first time...

I do have a couple of minor complaints:

1) Scenario editor...not because I creat them, but because I would **love** to play a WWII scenario
2) Bombardment still seems a bit useless I suppose...I think it should have a chance to kill a unit outright...and maybe select the actual target of bombarding (but with less chance of success of course) **Note...I found a good way of slowing down an army's onslaught: Just bomb the hell out of their roads so that they have to spend a turn in the open while you bombard them again before they even get a chance to attack (while at the same time using recon to plot their movements)
3) I found that planting spies was much too risky...I think peaceful players should be able to plant spies more easily so they can just information on armies and such...only the sabotaging and stealing missions should really be risky...
4) When right-clicking on a city icon...Transports that have cargo should show it in their numbers...I got really confused finding the right one!
5) Am I comatose or did they take out refigeration? I can't believe you can't have sprawling farmlands anymore and plentiful harvests...
6) My last quip...though it may be due to my playing ability, but I found the game to run slowly...I always seem to get to the year 2000 and I've barely discovered rocketry...eh...I guess I miss the speedy double-production mod in Multiplayer Civ2

p.s. I attached one of the saved games of my Indian Civilization played on Chieftain if anyone wants to peruse...

Well, I just had my first full out crash. The aztecs were bombing me, and one of my jet fighters was intercepting and it got stuck in a 'please wait' mode that just never went away!! And I was doing so well in my war...

The lag times I was experiencing in my previous post seem to be better, still the odd one.

Where do you set the bombards can kill? I can't find an option for it anywhere?

I hope this crashing is a one time thing though, a real pisser!

Matt

Civ3 for win Xp,2000 etc.

Well- dunno if there are ppl having problems with win2000 - but, even though I run civ from win98 - I believe a new patch could most certainly do with a thing or to to make civ3 a well-run experience for most gamers...

Saw some msgs about crashes above  , and I am considering both win2000 and xp as OS'es when I reconfigure my computer....

Must say that this patch has certainly improved the AI - perhaps not alot, but clearly noticable - for instance, I belive "it" is more aggressive, but don't quote me on that...:crazyeye:

Hey Matt go into editor under unit abilities and chose lethal air or land(or both) bombardment for each bombarding unit unit u want to be able to kill with bombardment. Have fun! Later!!

This was mentioned in the readme as a bug fix :

* Fixed bug with how shields were calculated for population hurrying. The first citizen is now worth 20 shields instead of 40 shields, just like all the other citizens.

Gave it a 7.

Trading drives me insane!

I've played a few games now. (As usual, lost a few, but we don't need to go there.)

In my current game, I am some how the top Civ. I have noticed that when trading for techs, any time I put a tech for resources and/or luxuries on the table, the advisor says they will 'never go for that.' Doesn't matter if I start for a tech for tech and I'm close to a deal... and to sweeten the deal I throw in a lux/resource... the deal is panned.

In this game, as usual, I am trailing a few tech advances. All the AI (almost all... unless they are practically bankrupt) have the same techs but they won't consider a trade for 2 resources plus 2 luxuries and all my gold... and my World Map.

Funny thing is I can sometimes pick up some "older" techs for a few hundred gold... but if I offer coal or rubber they want to show me the door. And the AI needs these resources desperately!

But a fair deal to the AI is still to offer me their worthless World Map for a tech they don't have!

On the continued theme of unwanted crashes - just to let you know that I experience my 3950BC crashes on Chieftain running W98SE with DirectX8.1 and 640MB Ram - Yeah, I know that W98 can get flaky past the 512 threshold but as I mentioned before - I had no probs until installing the 1.21 patch - and I don't have any probs with anything else.

Maybe someone can verify something for me - I installed the original game, then 1.17 then 1.21 - Do you have to install EVERY patch consecutively or does a patch replace all original patches - maybe that's where I've gone wrong ?

just my 2 penneth.

I've found a recurring crash bug that I've been able to work around. It involves a fighter jet shooting down a bomber over terrain that includes dyes and river. The game kept crashing at the same point, over the same square. To fix it, I had to move my fighter elsewhere, and let my cities get bombed.

This is running Win 98 with DirectX8.1, 394MB RAM, P3 800, Nvidia GeForce2 200MX. Maybe we can fix it for the next patch.

One other strange issue, I finally played an entire game, down to one last opponent, the Aztecs. My invasion began 2044, I planned to have several of his cities by endgame.

Instead the game ended in 2045! Domination, yet he still had his entire continent and a huge a$$ army!

Anyone else have a game end early like this??

BTW my 'bombardment pausing' bug seems to have cooled down a lot.

Cheers,

Matt

The patch's allright ...., though the compression slows down game saves ... (but i suppose it wont be a problem once i upgrade from a 266 mhz ... to a 2.0 ghz machine)

But the game is still missing a lot of things:
- Currently the pollution calculation seems to take into account the size of a cities population, it however does not take into account any negating effect planting of forests might have on the pollution .... or if you reduce the number of shields being produced by the city ... by giving them more entertainers etc.
(The forest calculation should take into account the global forest landmass as well amount of forest landmass under the players zone of control ...not just the city's production zone.... either man planted or that was part of the original terrain)

-there should be the ability to build bridges ...(upto 5 tiles long) across water bodies

-instead of going large, giant, huge map sizes ... under customization ... allow the player to select the dimensions .. (upto the maximum that the game is able to handle)

-allow workers, armies, and leaders to use airports.

-the terraforming options should be more robust ... like if a worker is on a land tile with not roads .... i should be able to ask him to build a railroad ... and worker should be able to carry out that task ... taking into account the number of turns it'll take to build a road and then build the railroad. .... Same with the ability to plant forest on a jungle tile .... or irrigate a jungle/forest tile.

- There should be an auto-road/railroad build option .. to instruct a worker to connect two cities

- workers should be upgradable to engineers like in Civ 2 ... with 2 movement points.
