Rate the Wonders: The Results

As I've found out recently, you don't need the great library when you are playing as the Shoshone. In the early eras there really are only ~3 super attractive ancient ruin options, and a free tech is one of them - you'll be getting quite the science lead!

Hubble Space Telescope is awesome, even if you don't play Tech Victory. Two free scientists that late in the game? Must be a joke?
I don't have a problem with Hubble anymore as the science victory seems to be the slowest even with the 2 bonus scientists. Just finished a game where I was 17 techs ahead of my nearest competitor and still ended up winning diplo almost accidentally about 5-6 turns before researching the final tech I needed to go to space, not to mention 4 more turns to build it.

Angkor Wat is definitely the worst wonder. It wouldn't be so bad except that by the time you build it, you'll hopefully already be working most of the best tiles to work, and it only becomes all that useful if you intend to settle a good number of cities yet. And even then, expending a GE on Angkor Wat, or even hard-building it, is not worth the effort.

I like to think of it as a nice little bonus for my puppet empire if I'm playing domination since the AI inevitably builds it anyway.

I've heard it argued before on this forum that, since the German Panzers were not really superior to the tanks of their opponents, and it was the USSR that made the biggest and baddest tanks in the latter days of WW2, it's rather the Russians that should have the Tank UU. This would fix this seeming discrepancy, at least.

Well, the Germans did have some ambitious plans for some really big and bad tanks!

Their tanks weren't really technically superior but they adapted old cavalry tactics of punching through enemy formations very well in the battlefield. The autocracy ideology has a tenet that improves armor units to reflect that.

To be fair the Germans do currently have the best tank in the world (Leopard 2A6), which is only really matched by the Challenger 2 (UK) and the M1A2 (USA), but in terms of spec it slightly outclasses both of them, but not by much. Those three tanks pretty much outclass anything else in the world right now.

German tanks were superior not because of armor or armament, but because their of how they were deployed and the fact that they were (starting with PzIV) equipped, unlike their early counterparts, with 3-man turrets and a radio. USSR still gets more credit in CIV5 though, as the generic Medium tank is a T-34 if I'm not mistaken.

How much better would Angkor Wat be if it gave Great Scientist points and had a science slot... Quite amazing.

You could say this about any wonder.

But spawning great scientists is already an ability of several wonders.

Maybe it should spawn a great engineer. Nothing spawns great engineers.

Wonders typically spawn -1 great engineers.

Exactly.

People would build Angkor Wat just so they could rush another wonder.

The key here is People would build Angkor Wat, which right now is unthinkable.

I don't like the idea of a wonder being just an accessory for getting another wonder. It's a bit like that social policy that used to give free social policies...

While I'm not sure if I agree with the (apparently) popular opinion that Angkor Wat is the worst wonder, I do agree that it could use a buff. In my opinion, a free University would be a fitting bonus, seeing as it was a scholarly institution, and then the Siamese would actually get a Wat out of Angkor Wat. :p

I also always found it weird that it gives a Great Engineer point. It should provide a Great Scientist point instead, methinks, especially since there's a good number of GE points in the World Wonders now, but there's a dearth of GS points (10 GE points v.s. 7 GS points, respectively).
