Does anyone have a rating? In the UK we have British Chess Federation ratings (BCF). I know in the US you use USCF, and internationally ELO is used. You used to have to play consistently for a couple of years here in leagues and tourneys before you got a rating. (I don't know what the situation is now.)

I never had an official rating because I never played for more than one year at a time. But I do know what it would be by playing against lots of other players who do have ratings. (It's about BCF 150.)

Does anyone here have a rating or know what it is likely to be?

By the way, here's a conversion chart (edited at the top end to include Anand!)...
British American International
BCF USCF ELO
80 1340 1240
90 1420 1320
100 1500 1400
110 1580 1480
120 1660 1560
130 1740 1640
140 1820 1720
150 1900 1800
160 1980 1880
170 2060 1960
180 2140 2040

Most federations require only that you play 20-25 rated tournament games before you get a "permanent rating." Of course, you can get a provisional rating before that, but it tends to change quickly from one game to the next, much more so than an established rating.

30 tournament games in a year is not considered uncommon, so it's not that hard to get a rating after just one year of tournament play.

I am 2195 CFC (Canadian Chess Federation) although I am pretty much a newcomer to Canada (one year) and have not played that many tournament games here yet--only 30 or so.

CFC ratings are fairly close to USCF; probably a bit deflated by comparison. So I guess I'm around 2250 USCF.

That would be... around 190 BCF, I think, for you Brits

I have always found BCF ratings to be incredibly confusing!

Wow Anand, that's a good rating! You should beat me nearly every time.
Martin, your rating's pretty much like mine used to be. (I say "used to be" because I'm very much out of practise.)

I once captained the team for our town (=size 1 city!) and our strongest player was BCF 160. Two years later when I played for our county's second team, I was board 19 out of 20, and ratings like yours Anand were common on the high boards.

holy geez you guys are good! what are you doing playing me, anand

Stormerne -- I'm not surprised you have a lot of good players in your county! England is a great chess country, with many many fine players. Here's a classical game by my favourite English player, Nigel Short:

[Site "Tilburg 53/115"]
[Date "1991.??.??"]
[White "Short, N "]
[Black "Timman, J "]
[Result "1-0"]

1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. d4 d6 4. Nf3 g6 5. Bc4 Nb6 6. Bb3 Bg7 7. Qe2 Nc6
8. O-O O-O 9. h3 a5 10. a4 dxe5 11. dxe5 Nd4 12. Nxd4 Qxd4 13. Re1 e6 14. Nd2 Nd5
15. Nf3 Qc5 16. Qe4 Qb4 17. Bc4 Nb6 18. b3 Nxc4 19. bxc4 Re8 20. Rd1 Qc5 21. Qh4 b6
22. Be3 Qc6 23. Bh6 Bh8 24. Rd8 Bb7 25. Rad1 Bg7 26. R8d7 Rf8 27. Bxg7 Kxg7 28. R1d4 Rae8
29. Qf6+ Kg8 30. h4 h5 31. Kh2 Rc8 32. Kg3 Rce8 33. Kf4 Bc8 34. Kg5 1-0

Just thought I'd add to the confusion.

When I played in Edinburgh in the eighties I was graded about 1745 (Scottish grades use the FIDE system but unless you get really good it's not a precise match)

When I played in Glasgow in the sixties I was about 170 (like the English system but in those days the English used something like 6A and 7A (or were the letters and numbers the other way?).

Five years ago before I stopped for a while I was about 130 to 140 English.

I keep telling myself it's all in the mind and I'm as good as my next game.

ratings for here are up. if anyone wants the program i use for ti 83/+ or 82, ask for it, i can attach it here. here is the system:

difference-0-9---10s---20s---30s---40s---50s--
draw---------0---1-----2-----3-----4-----5---
high won-----16--15----14----13----12----11
low won------16---17----18---19----20----21

one starts out at 400. same amount of points is taken away as given. process ends at 150 point diff. and up. dif. 150=15 draw;1 highwon;31 low won. its not a bad system.

That game has a most comical ending Anand! Timman must have been devastated.

You are right - there is a huge amount of chess talent in this country. I used to find it very satisfying running our town's team.

However, the last time I played competitive chess was in the late 80s - that's when I played low board in our county's second team. I got fed up losing my Saturdays travelling halfway across the country to play four hours and only draw, so I gave the whole thing up.
It's only now that I have a flicker of interest in chess again (thanks to you guys), though I have to say I'm somewhat rusty and at the moment I'm probably much better at Civ than chess!

I just thought I'd bring this back up to the top, because a rating is sort of like a post count, in it's true form it means Absolutely nothing. If anybody feels like they are intimidated by ratings, just don't look at them, because they are just an illusion. What really counts is that you understand the game. In my experience (way below the Master IM and GM level) a person who can improve in chess, can also improve in Life.
And Life is incredible, just like chess.

My rating is 1592 USCF you can do the math for the other methods of rating. But I’m by no means a prodigy but I work hard, and I play at least ONE game a day, and it’s all for me, and that just feels REALLY good.
It's like any given Sunday (no, not the movie), but anyone can be beat on a bad day, but a rating is a symbol of working hard and getting to know others that you play with. Just like with the post count here on CFC.

I guess this is really all about the game....
Play hard, find your rating, and try to improve...that is my message

I have a 830 or so USCF rating, poor compared to you guy but considering the fact that in northern indiana, very few people have college educated parents (college education means you'll probably introduce your child to things like chess or civ <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0> most people play sports and whatever intellegent youth there are all want to be on the Forensics team (myself included).

Anyways I'm the 2nd best highschool chessplayer in the school system(size 3 city, but we have a huge schoolsystem that has swallwed up a few others and the hinterlands around it so it's size 4)

I also have the second best rating of any highschool player (we are quite a sorry chess playing area)

Sorry for my tangential ramblings, forgive me

EDIT: a word was added
