RB23 - Alex the Decentral....

Great turns, Qwack! Good call on the close border hurting bismarck's GNP, learn something new everyday.

The gold is needed for rifleman upgrade as well, since this is the only effective counter we have against cavalries.

How is our dominations % by the way?

I hope Darrell can still play ... since your computer is still yet to be boxed ...

Very nice turnset Qwack, a lot of good moves there :goodjob:. This is an official got it, followed by a warning that if you don't see a report posted in 24 hours you can skip me with no guilt :)

My time is pretty limited now, so I only played 10 turns and they were all war preparation. I did not hit enter or move troops on the last turn as I think we are ready to take Bismarck on. Here is how I set things up:

picture1uq2.jpg

I don't like dividing my forces, but I did create several small stacks to put pressure across the front. The main force (more than half) is pointed at Stuttgart, which is where Bismarck has his forces concentrated:

civ4screenshot0013rc3.jpg

I believe I left enough to protect Beshbaik (note the two Knights outside the city):

picture2cb1.jpg

JC and Washington came asking for help against each other:

civ4screenshot0015ih3.jpg

civ4screenshot0016fi7.jpg

I declined and we dropped to Pleased and Annoyed, respectively. Here is the power graph, could get ugly for Bismarck :arr:

Guys, I have enjoyed this game quite a bit. Take a look at the finances screen and tell me if you agree that for Immortal we should take Tokugawa? Half cost Courthouses are going to help a lot and the cash for civics is really large considering we are still in the defaults .

Darrell

I dotn like saying this, but I just dont think this is possible on immortal. Its not only whipping army, but whenever we capture a city, we have to let it starve down 3 or 4 sized, instead of trading those 3 or 4 pop for 120 hammers. This is what ive really been missing from slavery, more than just whipping building's and army in our regular cities. The cities we take just dont help us enough immedietely, with slavery we can rush a courthouse and theatre in that city and it will help out pretty much right away...

Ofcourse, we can try :)

Nice build up, darrell ... (and all the best in your nest destination, wherever that might be :)). Our power graph looks promising

Now, as for immortal, I wouldn't know. Haven't try any game at immortal ... yet.

Will pick this up tomorrow night. If ozbenno is dying to hammer on bismarck and can play within 24hrs... go ahead.

That is interesting, you do pretty much the same thing I do. When I take a city I pop the Courthouse and let the overflow go into a Theater if borders are a problem, otherwise a troop. I don't expect to win on Immortal, but I feel almost obligated to try :D. We frankly got lucky in this game, you had one amazing turnset when you nailed the GL that turned our game around. We'll have to play a lot better, including more disucssion so that we have a focused opening and not a wasted move or tech since the room for error will be razor thin. We also need to do a better job with city specialization, it is funny we never created a dedicated great person pump with a Philosophical leader :crazyeye:. All our cities are pretty much hybrids.

On the plus side we've played two games togehter with this team under these rules, so we have a good idea what to expect. Anyway, if no one else wants to try it I'll understand, heck I can't consistently win Immortal with civics!

Darrell

P.S. Of course, we have to finish this game off first

Thanks, I am indeed going to South Florida, so at least it is still warm ;)

I've only played maybe 6 or 7 games on Immortal (not counting Epic 7). For me the jump from Monarch to Emperor involved a change in strategic approach since I could no longer keep up with the land grab without an isolated start (some people claim to be able to do this, but I don't see how unless you tailor the map). However, from Emperor to Immortal the strategy doesn't change, it is just more focused. You really want to start fairly close to an AI, and only found one city to grab Copper, then do an Axe rush before your neighbor can get off the ground. This map could have been a major problem for us, the one isolated start I got on Immortal was a pretty bad loss.

I would propose one change to the game setup: no barbarians.

@darrelljs - nice set up. What's our domination limit? Are there still a couple of German cities way down south?

Hmm...that was in my notes but I left it out of the turn report :crazyeye:. We are at 33/47% pop and 39/64% land. I am very sure we will need to kill some of JC, and given how many crack troops we have we will probably finish him off before enough cities come out of revolt to push us over the limit. By your use of the word still I take it to mean at one point there was a German city down South, but I didn't notice one. Of course, I don't recall looking for one either :mischief:.

As for Immortal, I'm not sure it could be done but always willing to give it a go.

Cool . I think that's four willing to try. I'm sure ThERat won't let us down.

If we do start immortal, I think we should do it once everyone is back. I think darrell wont be here for a few days(right?) and TheRat is still on vacation. Lets just finish this game off first.

Just loaded the save to have a look. There are two German cities in our South. Leipzig is near Washington's city and you can't see what it contains. It is fairly well seperated from us (ie no roads). Hanover is directly south of York and has 1 cavalry, 1 longbow and 1 pike. York is 3 turns of a rifleman so should be all right.

Unfortunately, I won't have access to my machine again until October 20th (at the earliest). I'm all for waiting until I get back, but this is quite some time, so whatever the team wants is fine with me.

Darrell

if we try immortal, I guess it will be all the we to modern age warfare as we lack the most powerful tool called whipping. Unhappy new cities will be a pain as they will generate huge negative income until they have a court.
do we really want that. anyway we got to wait until darrel settled in his new home

I think the jump from emperor to immortal is the largest in the game. Atleast for me this is the case. I can only win 10% of games on immortal right now with mostly randomized settings(I retire most of them when I know I cant win). On Emperor im basically at 95% wins now. I have been struggling heavily on immortal due to the decreased happiness and increased upkeep. Although my last few games have gone much better.. :p

In terms of leader, tokugawa sounds pretty good, although washington should be considered also. Financial and Organized might help more than aggresive for keepinjg those cities. No UU is the only problem though..

Each jump seems to get successively harder, and I bet Immortal to Deity is the harderst, the AI gets a free Settler . I just took a look at my hall of shame, err I mean fame and I am 3/11 on Immortal. One is Epic 7 which shouldn't count and the other two are both water maps where I really used the whip quite a bit. I have exactly zero Immortal wins on Continents/Pangaea/Fractal. So I pretty much can't play that level in a normal game . I remember seeing a post by I think Acid Satyr that he can win 9/10 Immortal games, maybe you should not bother waiting for me and pick him up instead, even if it was my suggestion we try it :mischief:.

Sorry for taking so long ... the game slowed down too much and I have no time to edit the screenshots, so have to wait until lunch time today.

First off, upon careful inspecton, I don't think we have sufficient forces to declare at my inherited turn. First, up in north-east, there is 4 more hidden units not visible, which is reveals if you scout up north:

rb23-AD1730-bismarck-NE.jpg

We simply do not have enough rifles to get rid of the cavs. Once the cavs is gone, the rest is simple clean up.

Also, down south, the German city has a cav as well. Have to wait until our nearby cities produces a rfile each .. that means 4 turns away.

So meanwhile, why not get some cash from Bismarck by seling him our gold? He would have less gold, and he would thought he has one more lux to grow his city more, and when we declare, those overgrown cities will each have an extra angry citizen :mischief:

I have also taken the opportunity to move our west-most forces up north into JC's border and park just outside the German city.

And so 8 years had peacefully passed ... its time! :hammer: :hammer:

rb23-AD1738-war.jpg

First, the northeast stacks has to be taken out:

While attacking, Rifleman defeats (3.36/14): German Cavalry at 66.6 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (6.44/14): German Cavalry at 71.9 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (1.40/14): German Cavalry at 71.9 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (6.44/14): German Cavalry at 71.7 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (11.76/14): German Knight at 89.4 percent.

The other larger stack, I decided to waste a couple of cannons:

While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Musketman (7.56/9) at 9.2 percent.
While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Cavalry (3.90/15) at 21.1 percent. <- retreats
Cannon promoted: Barrage I
While attacking, Cannon defeats (6.48/12): German Musketman at 24.1 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (8.96/14): German Cavalry at 87.9 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier loses to: German Musketman (0.09/9) at 87.8 percent. <- impossible!!!!! :aargh:
Grenadier promoted: Combat IV
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (5.52/12): German Musketman at 90.0 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): German Pikeman at 99.7 percent.
While attacking, Knight defeats (10.00/10): German Cavalry at 98.9 percent.
While attacking, Knight defeats (7.40/10): German Catapult at 99.9 percent.

He is left with a half-dead musket and 4 cats.

Next, the city of Kushan:

While attacking, Grenadier defeats (7.68/12): German Musketman at 70.1 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): German Rifleman at 74.7 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (12.18/14): German Pikeman at 99.5 percent.
Captured Kushans (Bismarck)

rb23-AD1738-kushans.jpg

In between turn, Bismarck unleashes his stack of Doom, comprising of cats and cavs on our forces outside Stugart. I have actually purposely shift our forces to a tile that is across the river from the city, but the AI is smart: it moves forces across the bank first before attacking, kudos!

While defending, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (12.46/14): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (12.46/14): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (12.46/14): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (9.60/12): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (9.60/12): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (2.80/14): German Cavalry at 89.8 percent.
While defending, Rifleman loses to: German Cavalry (8.70/15) at 54.4 percent.
While defending, Rifleman loses to: German Cavalry (6.00/15) at 48.5 percent.
While defending, Rifleman loses to: German Cavalry (9.30/15) at 31.7 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (1.40/14): German Cavalry at 49.3 percent.
While defending, Rifleman defeats (3.22/14): German Cavalry at 44.8 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (9.60/15) at 25.7 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (3.60/12): German Cavalry at 25.7 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (7.35/15) at 10.9 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (11.16/12): German Crossbowman at 96.5 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (6.12/12): German Crossbowman at 96.5 percent.

This is what we are left with after the fierce battle:

rb23-AD1740-injured-forces.jpg

I next moves our forces to the hill east of stugart, and then another wave of cats and cavs from Bismarck:

While defending, Grenadier defeats (10.32/12): German Catapult at 99.8 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (7.68/12): German Catapult at 99.8 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (5.04/12): German Catapult at 97.3 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (3.36/12): German Catapult at 96.2 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (4.08/12): German Cavalry at 25.1 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (15.00/15) at 0.0 percent.
While defending, Knight loses to: German Cavalry (9.60/15) at 2.7 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (7.35/15) at 2.3 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (8.10/15) at 1.6 percent.
While defending, Grenadier loses to: German Cavalry (6.30/15) at 0.6 percent.
While defending, Grenadier defeats (8.16/12): German Cavalry at 95.2 percent.

This hurts.

But its my turn again:

While attacking, Grenadier defeats (1.80/12): German Rifleman at 75.9 percent.
Rifleman promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (4.20/14): German Pikeman at 98.6 percent.
Rifleman promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): German Pikeman at 98.6 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): German Pikeman at 99.3 percent.
Captured Leipzig (Bismarck)

rb23-AD1740-leipzig.jpg

And next turn, I exacted revenge on our forces:

While attacking, Cannon defeats (1.08/12): German Rifleman at 29.9 percent.
Cannon promoted: City Raider I
While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Longbowman (1.56/6) at 65.5 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (1.92/12): German Cavalry at 74.1 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (11.90/14): German Crossbowman at 99.0 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (11.48/14): German Cavalry at 99.5 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (9.52/14): German Cavalry at 99.9 percent.
Cannon promoted: City Raider I
While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Cavalry (0.30/15) at 91.2 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (10.68/12): German Longbowman at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (8.04/12): German Cavalry at 100.0 percent.
Judaism has spread: Stuttgart (German Empire)
Judaism has spread: Stuttgart
Captured Stuttgart (Bismarck)

rb23-AD1742-stutgart.jpg

While attacking, Rifleman defeats (8.54/14): German Longbowman at 99.1 percent.
Rifleman promoted: Combat I
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (6.86/14): German Longbowman at 72.7 percent.
Rifleman promoted: Combat II
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (14.00/14): German Pikeman at 99.5 percent.
Judaism has spread: Duisburg (German Empire)
Judaism has spread: Duisburg
Hinduism has spread: Duisburg
Captured Duisburg (Bismarck)

rb23-AD1744-duisburg.jpg

Then I attack the city of Essen ...

rb23-AD1748-Essen.jpg

While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Rifleman (8.12/14) at 0.8 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman loses to: German Cavalry (3.75/15) at 76.5 percent. <-- :aargh:
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (1.68/14): German Longbowman at 88.7 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (6.36/12): German Crossbowman at 96.8 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (9.36/12): German Rifleman at 77.6 percent.

The first lost cost me the chance of capturing the city, by the next turn, Bismarck reinforces that city with tons of cavs ... but I am moving reinforcement up.

The northeast front has been relatively quiet, because we simply don't have sufficient forces there. I am moving troops from the northeast towards west, just when i was ready to proceed, Bismarck does a pre-emptive strike on a lone rifle

While defending, Rifleman loses to: German Cavalry (1.80/15) at 58.6 percent.

and leave 5 cavs there:

rb23-AD1750-New-Sarai.jpg

Okay, fine. Say your farewell, guys.

While attacking, Cannon loses to: German Cavalry (15.00/15) at 20.7 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (9.12/12): German Cavalry at 9.9 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (5.60/14): German Cavalry at 97.4 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (7.44/12): German Cavalry at 70.1 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): German Cavalry at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): German Cavalry at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Cannon defeats (12.00/12): German Cavalry at 100.0 percent.
While attacking, Rifleman defeats (7.42/14): German Catapult at 100.0 percent.

We are ready to strike the city down south. Careful abt Washy, he cancel our open borders.

412 turns to Steam Power. Excellent. ;)

Domination watch, 37.9/47 population, 43.4/64 land.

I feel a bit sorry for Bismark as this happens first turn. Rifles against longbows does seem slightly unfair

Less so when this happens second turn.

By the time this happens third turn I cease to care!

I have to pump up the culture slider to 40% as some cities were shrinking.

Fourth turn. You still here Bismark?

<imagine picture of Frankfurt falling to mighty Greek hordes>

And that's the Eastern German Empire gone. He's got 4 other cities, so I'm going to have to get some troops across.

Slider up to 50%.

Got two armies on the move. One headed for Hamburg. One for Berlin.

Domination watch, 43.1/47 population, 50/64 land.

Three German cities to come out of revolt as well.
