RB29a - Cultural Extermination

If you are at war with the owner of the city the value of cultureGarrison is doubled, so it is harder to flip cities of civs with whom you are at war.

Hmm... which to believe, debug mode, or SDK... I'm gonna have to look at the SDK myself and see if I can figure this out. As for debug mode, is that possible for anyone to access or was that just a beta-tester tool (I've never seen a way to get into debug mode, either that or just missed it).

Well, let's see here. We're not making much progress on the Japanese front. Plus, Julius has too many units laying around. How might we fix that?

Caesar is likely to get this soon anyway, and since he does not have artillery, he's not going to space in this game's lifetime.

Founding Kostroma killed our free well, so I had to research Combustion after Artillery. Only took 6 turns, and we're now researching rocketry for gunships.

Caesar didn't waste any time taking it to Japan.

Needless to say, Kyoto fell the next turn, and we now have the city on the coast up and founded. Julius wondered if we wanted in on the fun:

We politely declined. We are the Borg. We would rather assimilate than fight :)

(0) 1970AD Dear Lord, Paris still hasn't flipped yet?! Well, let's hope our luck there turns around on this turnset.

I notice that one of our future "white dot" locations has opened up in Roman territory! Grab a settler and some defenders and hurry him over there while I can:

By the way, note that our new cities START at 40 culture/turn! Make some other minor tweaks, otherwise leave things mostly alone. If we're lucky, Toyko will fall next turn and open up some more space.

(1) 1971AD We build Rock N Roll in Rostov, which is useless aside from denial value. (But hey, may as well!) Tokyo is definitely falling in another turn or two, as Toku is down to just four defenders (against a LOT of Roman units). Poaching crew gets ready...

(3) 1973AD Called this one:

DOWN goes Tokyo! You know, it occurs to me that we may be seeing a repeat of what happened to the Americans here. Our job will get immensely easier if Toku were to disappear from the map. With that in mind, I decide to recruit some more help from Temujin:

Just two cities to go! Come on Khan and Caesar!

(5) 1975AD Another Japanese city goes down:

Beshbalik is about to be taken by the Mongolians as well. This is proving to be an entertaining turn watching the AIs slug it out. Their power ratings are all dropping on the F9 graphs too!

(6) 1976AD There's one artillery and one longbow remaining in Osaka. Caesar has three tanks in striking range. Could be.... :mischief:

(7) 1977AD Rocketry -> Flight. Let's get some bombers in the air for an added insurance policy. But of overwhelming more importance is this news:

JAPAN DESTROYED!!! [party]

Unfortunately, thanks to the horrible geography over here, we can only add one additional city, three tiles south of Kyoto. If only Osaka were one tile south! (Or had been razed.) Still, the cultural meter got reset back to zero on pretty much every one of these tiles. We'll have an excellent chance of flipping most of these locations.

(10) 1980AD And that's pretty much it. But it was QUITE an exciting turnset!

Here's a picture of the completely changed eastern front, minus Japan:

What we really need to do now is go after Caesar. That's a tall order, I know! But we've been building up to this the whole game, and the time to strike is now. We should be able to get flips at Kyoto, Pisae, and Setia (extreme northwest), plus Osaka and Tokyo down the road (right now, the Mongolians are culturally dominant on these tiles, but we're gaining ground). LKendter, you will have the opportunity to play military man again if so desired. We've got units EVERYWHERE, so I'd suggest using the F5 Military Advisor to help find them all if you decide to go after Caesar.

Conquest is almost certainly out, but we're now up to 69.1% land area - way over the Domination limit. :king:

Good luck! :)

On the plate for tonight.

I will have to check if we got gunships before I think about a war.

:borg: How does Paris continue to resist us? :borg:
:assimilate: That city should have fallen a long time ago :assimilate:

I better get an excuse this round to continue to abuse these smilies: :borg: :assimilate:

We've got units EVERYWHERE

So true! I tried to consolidate our forces a little bit on my watch, sending extra infantry/marines/artillery to, um, is it Samara? City that begins with an 'S' on the Roman border  I also tried to get some of our lone infantry in now backline territory up front, shifting some obsolete units to cover for them. IIRC, there's quite a large stack of obsoletes in a city in our NW on the border with Germany.

Also, don't forget when we go to war that we need a few modern units up NW to deal with the 3-4 infantry in Seita. Also, our island colonies might be in for a rough ride without some fortification.

I didn't have time to elaborate last night, but bringing Caesar into war with Japan had two purposes. The first, obviously, was to eliminate Japan's hard-to-flip territory, but the second was to get all of Julius's extra forces out of position on the wrong side of the globe. "While the cat's away, the mice will play!" Now is the time to hit him, gunships or no, while his troops are tied up trying to secure former Japan. Even better if we can bring Khan in against him to keep those troops over there.

Looks like that MOO experience helps with diplomacy.

In terms of warmongering, yes. In terms of finding good trades and manipulating relations, I still need some practice :undecide:

Well I just hope no team hits conquest. I would like our effort to be the best. We made a couple of bad decisions IMHO.
1) Looking back building the national epic in Moscow was a mistake. We needed GT / NE combo and an artist factory. More and more I wish we had a few artist to help with the stubborn cities. The GT / NE combo is great for feeding artist in a cultural win game, and would have helped us break some stubborn cities a lot sooner. Or we could bomb an area to open up some new cities spots.
2) I am now 100% convinced the culture slider sucks for this variant. Too much of the culture goes to the rear line cities gaining nothing. Give me chance to try again and I will want caste system and a farm / specialist economy. Extra artists in the front line would gain a lot more then the token culture from cottages.

Poor Caesar. You buy him into this war, he throws the kitchen sink at Japan and completely runs it over, only to (hopefully quickly) lose the entire country to Russia!

1980 AD

How it is that a player that prefers quite builder turns keeps getting asked for a war?
(IT) We get a Russian revolt in Kyoto despite Rome having 7 units in the city. :assimilate: :borg:

1981 AD
This is earlier then I planned, but I can't resist all the injured units. War is declared against Rome. :hammer:
I give Khan radio to join the party, purely as a distraction.

Kyoto is knocked down 1 defender at no cost.
We burn up some artillery, but Tokyo is also down to 1 defender. I found the flaw with our forces - not enough sacrificial artillery.
Cumae is also knocked down to one defender.
No attacks occur at Osaka, as we lack bombard units to weaken the defense stack.
(IT) Rome chews up our ships at sea.
A few miscellaneous attacks our units, but we pretty much shrug it off.

1982 AD
I knock Osaka down to 1 defender, but there are a lot of units heading toward Ning-hsia.
I destroy all of the reinforcements, and Cumae is back down to 1 defender.
Setia is down to 1 defender.
(IT) Mongolia captured Tokyo. That city must be sick of changing hands.

1983 AD through 1988AD
The attacks continue to be smack the cities back down to 1 defender.

1988 AD
The only change is these new flying things make the cities have no defenders.

=======================

Summary:

This was a depressing turn as I got NO flips.

I have just one round left to play, and I will be glad to wrap this one up. The fun factor dropped once I knew we had no chance to win the variant.

Well, Cos has until Tuesday evening. I can't get it until then. If Sullla or LK want to take a turn in between for fun, I wouldn't object :)

Guys, I hate to be a spoil-sport but you have already long time ago violated your own variant rule #1:

Variant Rules:
1) Cities may not be captured or razed under any circumstances.
2) Our units cannot enter enemy territory without Open Borders.

Just look at all the cities you've razed.... I wonder whether the other teams have forgotten that part of the rule too ??

We've done no such thing; we haven't captured or razed a single city. What we HAVE done is refuse to accept cultural flips, which is not the same thing. Everyone has been calling that "razing" because it's a shorthand way of expressing the idea, but it's not the same thing. We could have razed the remaining French cities a hundred times over by now, but we've been constrained by the variant and had to wait for them to flip.

Seriously, do you think we're THAT stupid? Give us a little credit here.

hehehehe of course I don't think you guys are stupid :) I just think this is borderline razing (non-acceptance raze of cities) ;)

EDIT: Anyway, I've enjoyed the ride this far and look forward to the finish :)

Game is crashing between turns 1997 - 1998. Seems to be due to submarine activity? Had a crash between 1994-1995 as well, but re-start let me continue. Thoughts?

I have no clue on this one. I haven't see that problem before.
