RBC12I - The Western Roman Empire

I have no idea how CA's reply ended up before my actual post. :eek:

Only gave it a brief lookover, but everything looks good Corrado! Any Warlords yet? How are the VPs?

No warlords yet, not even pillagers- just marauders, marauders, and more marauders.

As for VPs- we have about 11-12000, which is 1000 more than East Rome. So in theory we're 1/3 of the way there.

Any horses exploring Africa yet?

No, didn't get that set up, and sent the one horse being built off to help fight the Visis.

Re: Christianity: personally I would have gone for Mil. Trad., since in addition to one of the Christian wonders (religious trait) we'll need Justinian's too (militaristic), for a total of 1050 shields. That's a lot. The Eastern Romans don't have to worry about that; since they're Commercial/ Religious and already start with the Lighthouse in Alexandria (comm.), they only need to invest 450 shields for a GA.

Agreed, but I felt that some of the advantages of those Wonders- a free temple in each city for one of them (as many of our cities lack temples in the first place, and we could use the lack-of-maintenance on the others) and 2 extra happy citizens for the other (saving us from building churches) was worth it. And again, we might be able to squeeze MT from Eastern Rome. It's a gamble, and my apologies if we should have done tried-and-true rather than risk the double.

Minor complaint though, since our Legions are doing a good enough job that HC aren;t that essential yet.

Absolutely- so long as our enemies just have marauders and spears, our legions kick ass and inscribe names.

Honestly, I see no way to ever build Justinians - it would need about 30 turns in Rome /Neapolis, or 10 Legions...and we'd have to start a Prebuild now.

So, if we want a GA, we need to capture the Scourge (no joke this time, Charis!), and build a Church after that. So IMHO, we abandon research on Christianity and switch to anything else. If we'd trade Christianity to ERome, they may manage to focus on wonders; even if they don't get it, they'll die because of the know AI greed for wonders. But chance is high enough they'll get both - for them, its only 280spt each, and the first will trigger their GA, fueling the 2nd one.

:thumbsup: Corrado !

Historical sidenote: The Western Roman emperor at this point (412 AD) was Honorius I (395-423 AD). Son of Theodosius I, Honorius had taken rule in the West while his brother Arcadius was emperor of the East. Although the empire had been split earlier, the main difference in this case was that the split was to remain continous until 476 AD, the traditional date for the fall of the Western Empire.

The reign of Honorius also saw a rebellion in Britain by a legate named Constantine in 406 AD. The usurper managed to cross into Gaul and reach Italy before being defeated and executed by Honorius' forces. Honorius decided to completely withdraw the Roman military from Britain, most likely to prevent future rebellions but also to save on military spending. Thus ended four centuries of Roman occupation in Britain.

Don't worry, I won't be withdrawing from Britain ;)

Inherited Turn: Hmmm, what to do. Re Golden Age: If we get a scientific leader, then I'll rush Justinian's and then start building one of the religious wonders. If our 3% dice roll comes up empty, then its legions-legions-legions.

The history of the later Roman Empire is marked by the shift of power from Rome to Constantinople. So I think it's fitting that our eastern brothers triggered their golden age and will soon finish and win their game.

Not much MM to do, Corrado left things in good shape. I thought abouyt starving down Londinium, since at size 5 the best it can do is two labourers, two entertainers, and one scientist/taxman. At size 3, it could have one labourer and two taxmen/scientist. However, I'll wait until I hook up some more luxuries - maybe then I can fire some entertainers and hire taxmen/scientists while still staying at size 5. Aquicum however can be starved down - @ size 4 it has 2 labourers, 1 scientist, 1 entertainer. I wake workers in England and will ferry them to Europe soon - no need for mines or irrigation up there. Re-work scientists and taxmen, so now we stand at Christianity in 7 @ 1gpt. With a church, Rome could hit 25spt with some improvements - 2 turn legions! I switch over to a church in Neapolis as well. Switch over a couple of African cities to horsemen in order to explore and kill barbs. Trade our WM around for 10g. Note with satisfaction that the E. Romans have recaptured Ephesus! Good job Arcadius! Time to kick some barbarian buttock.

IT: Our exposed Worker in Israel, who was headed to the Dyes, is killed by a wounded Sassanid horsemen - looks like Caesarea is under siege then. A Celtic curragh drops off a Maurader next to London. Franks start SoG.

414 AD (1): Our catapult in Londinium, which is only defended by a Garrison, misses the Maurader. Hopefully the city can hold out during the IT, as no units can reach it this turn. :eek: A Galley is asleep in Deva - I wake it and move it near Ireland so we can better predict when the Celts are launching attacks.

Hey, weren't we just talking about Honorius? :D
rbc12i_leader.jpg

We don't take the city, but next turn the army should be able to finish it off. However, we do raze the A-S city of Lubeck, losing one archer in the process. F8 reveals the A-S now stand at 5 cities lost.

IT:
rbc12i_414ad.jpg

A Dark Day for the Western Roman Empire. Not really much we could have done, except for done a better job of patrolling the Irish Coast with our galleys. Eh, what's one city anyay?
Two Vizigoth Pillagers and a Raider appear near Aquincum - one of the Pillagers kills a Frank Spear, enslaving a worker. E. Romans kill a Sass. Horse.
Rome Church-->Legion. It can now hit 24spt max, but I optimize for growth to get it to size 12. Neapolis Church-->Legion. It can now put all citizens to work, no entertainers required.

416 AD (2):I just checked the boards and read Doc's post about MT. I agree with him and junk our 4 turns of research on Christianity. Mars will help us more than Jesus at this point anyway ;). Diplo Check: Hmm, our reputation appears to have been trashed:
rbc12i_rep.jpg

Sell WM for 11g.
I move a legion and cat next to the Maurader and cat camped on the Londinium VP spot. They were smart in razing the city, I'll give them that much. Kill a Vizi Pillager and a Sass. Horsemen. A horsemen attacks a Vizi Pillager, does 2 hp of damage and retreats. At the Vandal capital of Hippo Regius, our Army kills two spears and an Elite Legion kills another. Still a Reg spear left there though. Here's the situation on the Vizigoth Front:
rbc12i_416ad.jpg

Now that they have Pillagers, taking out their iron is priority #1 here.

IT: A-S move 4 raiders near Aug. Trev. No new Vizi forces appear. Celt cat fires and misses. Tarentum Courthouse-->Legion.

418 AD (3): Sell WM map for 10g. We re-capture the Londinium VP spot. We kill 3 more spears at Hippo Regius and finally raze the Vandal Capital, capturing 2 workers. Vandals are now at 5 cities eliminated. Have to kill our treasury to rush a Legion in Aug Trev; I've already lost one city this turn and don't want to chance another.

IT:The Vizi come begging for peace! Well, at least we now he'll come to the table now. We have too much military over there, so we decline. Vandal Raider dies to a legion. I see 4 Easter Dromons sail by. Aug. Trev. Legion-->Barracks. Antium Legion-->Barracks. Plague hits Durcotorum. A couple of Viz Migrant Pairs are heading towards the site of their razed city - excellent.

420 AD (4): We bombard the Celtic Curragh returning from Londinium with a cat hit, and then sink it with a Galley, promoting it to Veteran. We kill 2 Viz Raiders, promoting a Legion to Elite. All 3 of our Cats at Aug. Trev. miss against the 4 A-S Raiders. Gee great luck with those so far, makes me look pretty stupid for building them earlier! However an Archer does Manage to kill one and a Legion another.

From the looks of things the A-S only have two cities left, so it'll be good ol' fashioned conquest to knock them out instead of elimination. I send the captured Vandal slaves exploring North - it'll take them forever to reach our core, plus we need to find out where the Vandals are. We sell our WM for 12g - those horsemen in Africa are more than paying for themselves.

IT: Vizi settlers head towards their old city. Legions await their founding :). Celts + A-S declare War on Franks. A Vandal Raider KILLS a Vet Legion! Bad luck there. Rome Legion-->Legion. Vindobona Barracks-->Legion. The A-S Raiders didn't attack, just fortified outside Aug. Trev.

422 AD (5): This time two of our Cats hit the A-S Raiders. Reg Archer kills one, promotes to Vet, and Reg Legion promotes to Veteran killing the other. Honorious finally arrives in Aquicum and will build an army next turn. We kill a couple of Viz Raiders. Our Germanic forces move towards the A-S capital and see this:
rbc12i_422ad.jpg

Looks like we're not the only ones cursed with Plague. Sell WM for 10g.

IT: The Viz move 6 Raiders, 1 Maurader and 1 Pillager close to Aquincum. A Viz pillager dies attacking a vet legion across a river and on a forest. Neapolis Legion-->Legion. Burdigala Barracks-->Legion. Avaricum Horsemen-->Legion.

424 AD (6): I load the Port Said settler onto a galley to speed his journey. Our newly formed Army, the Danubian Guard, loads up two Legions and kills the Viz Pillager and Maurader.

In Vandal territory, our Army heads north to two pop 1 Vandal cities, while our two Elite Legions head south to waste a newly founded Vandal city. After those 3 are gone, so are the Vandals. We kill 3 more Viz Raiders with no losses. Map trading nets 8g this turn.

IT: A Viz Raider impales himself on our swords. The Eastern Romans kill two Viz Raiders near a healing legion of ours! Sassanids and Franks sign peace. Huns declare War on Ostros. Veii Legion-->Barracks. Tarraco Legion-->Legion. The Iron in Southern Italy disappears - we have one left.

426 AD (7): The Viz found a city on their old spot - but since there's another migrant/spear inside the city, I'll wait a turn for them to move out so I can easily kill another Viz city later:
rbc12i_426ad.jpg

We kill an A-S Spear at Kiel. And then while attacking a Vandal city:
rbc12i_426ad3.jpg

You can also see where I plan to send our First Legion Army. I kill another Spearman at the same city but it holds. Hopefully it'll fall next turn. While moving our Leader back towards our cities, I notice something interesting:
rbc12i_426ad2.jpg

How the heck did they get a Leader??? Hopefully he'll go into Panormus and I can kill him next turn. With all of these Raiders running around I move our leader back to the protection of the two legions. I sell our WM for 14g.

IT: The E. Romans kill 3 Viz Raiders. Viz Migrant in Unselsund moves West. Eboracum Galley-->Galley. Antium Barracks-->Church.

428 AD (8): We kill two Spears and raze the Vizi city of Unselsund. We kill two spears at Panormus, but the city holds - looks like the Vandals will form an army. Lots of moving and resting this turn. WM nets 12g.

IT: Franks + Huns ally vs the Ostros. A-S declare war on Ostros. One of our Vandal scouting Workers is killed by a reg Barb. Rome Legion-->Legion. Milan Church-->Barracks. Milan fires all entertainers.

430 AD (9): We found a colony on the Sinai Incense. Adjust cities and specialists accordingly. Rome is now at 25spt - 2 turn Legions! Before we were at +6gpt and 6 turns until MilTrad. Now we're at +19gpt and 6 turns! I decide that Gold is more important than MT at the moment, since we'll need $$ to upgrade our few horsemen, so I don't up the science slider.

We load a 3rd Legion into the Danubian Guard and send it off towards the Viz. Our Northern Army kills two Spears at Cartennae. Kill various Raiders. 13g from WM trading.

IT: Ostros want an Alliance vs the Franks. Come back in 10 more turns, ok? ;) Franks are sailing towards England - it'll take them awhile to build harbors to get that Iron though. A bunch of Vandals go after an archer, leaving a city wide open for attack:
rbc12i_430ad.jpg

Neapolis Legion-Legion. Tarentum Garrison-Church. Cumae Legion-Harbor.

432 AD (10): We lose 1 legion but raze the Viz city of Ufarplaja. 10g for our WM. Kill 2 Spears at Atauf. Settler lands at Port Said, can found next turn. And that's it for me.

Notes for next ruler:
-Aug. Trev. has been starving for the past 10 turns, since I wanted to run 3 specialists and get it down to size 3.
-We may want to consider switching our backwater cities to wealth. They can only produce a regular legion every 50 turns anyway, and then it'll take forever for them to get to the front. Plus our core can now pump out legions. Next ruler's call though.
-I was chopping a couple of game in two backwater cities, so I could do the 2 specialists/3 citizen/6fpt thing.
-I left the leader and the northern army unmoved, since those moves would most affect the next reign and not mine. You might think I'm crazy for sending the leader unescorted close to the Franks, but they're Gracious towards us and we have an Alliance with them against the Vandals. However, we can sell them Wines for 90g if you feel nervous about losing the leader. And if the leader bites the dust, I take full responsibility.
-The Celts have a galley headed towards England - maybe the Franks will be nice and sink it for us.

Byz haven't researched anything new. Mil Trad. is due in 5, so we could probably package together Monotheism and MT for Byz Ing.

Summary: A-S and Vandals both have lost 5 cities; Celts 2; Vizi 3; E. Rome 4; W. Rome 1. Losing Londinium hurt, but not much could have been done about it. Popped two more Leaders. Hooked up Incense with Gems to follow shortly.

THE SAVE

Caesar_Augustus (just played)
akots (UP)
Doc Tsiolkovski (On Deck)
Corrado
HannibalBarka (skipped, approaching drop)

I picked up roughly 4,000 VPs on my turn, and that total will increase now that we're in position to eliminate some civs and also because more expensive units (Pillagers) are being built and killed by us. So I doubt I'll see this one again. Let's take this game home guys!

It looks like upload folder is down ATM. Hopefully, I can get the file today and will play it today as well because otherwise, I would be able to play only on Saturday. C_A, it is an exeption, I understand, but I'll pm you with my RL e-mail, so please send me the save there unless I'll post "got it" within a couple of hours. Thanks. Please post suggestions/directions/comments ASAP.

Edited: Uploads back on line, got it, will play today.

SAVE

Another Emperor is dead or murdered. Well, who cares? Long live the Emperor! Long live the Senate and Rome! Swords are forged and sharpened in Rome. Messengers with orders ride along the highways, galleys sail, barbarians try to attack. The military might of Rome is unsurpassable, culture indestructible, and with some minor problems we can deal. People are happy in large cities praying in churches to their God. Markets burst with activity selling and buying new and strange African goodies. The sages are close to discovery of new kind of heavily armed cavalry with huge spears. When properly trained and combined in armies, these new troops can bring even more glory to Rome and more devastation to barbarians. Future is bright.

IBT. Glycerius runs for shelter to Augusta Vindelicum through Frank territory. Roamers attack Cartennae killing 2 spears and revealing another unfortified. Archer there dies attacking Vandal raider. Gemina legion retreats from Kiel to neutral territory trying to heal. The retreat is covered by other elite troops. Resetting preferences, going through all cities trying to mm something better than it is. Neapolis making 16spt switched from legion to horse, Carthage is building legion but has a clown and needs a worker for mining. Clown fired, two taxmen hired at expense of 1spt. Production changed to settler. Massilia with clown switched from market to worker. Tarentum switched to rax from church. It is a good city now and will build rax, legion, and church before it grows. Antium switched to legion. There is a settler in Sinai. Not sure where to build a city to cover the colonies better. We cannot build on desert in this scenario.
Sassanid horses (six!) come to Caesarea, Celtic galley sails to Britain, Vandal raider dies to our legion. Very quiet indeed. Rome legion->legion, Carthage settler->worker, Ravenna church->legion, Aquileia rax->legion.

[1] 434AD. Pisae founded in between Caesarea and Alexandria building walls. Galley there sails to Rome for some reinforcements. Legions raze Ataulfhulundi capturing a Visigoth worker. Danubians advance to Fritigernhaims. Settler from Carthage moves deeper into the continent to claim iron there just in case. Our galley attacks Celtic galley and sinks it. Cartennae razed by Roamers. Captured a slave. Antium grows and gets a clown for 4 turns.
IBT Caesarea holds but lost 2 legions this turn killing 3 or 4 Sassanid horsemen. Some Vandal raiders move. Neapolis horse->horse, Milan rax->legion at 7spt lacking just one.

[2] 436AD. Glycerius arrives at Vindobona and builds an army in anticipation of newly upgraded HC to join. Army renamed to Northern skullcrushers. Rushed walls in Pisae for 36g.
IBT Ostrogoths and Sassanids sigh peace. Caesarea survives one more turn. Celtic galley sails. Rome legion->legion, Massilia worker->temple with clown, Pisae walls->garrison.

[3] 438AD. Two galleys sink attacking Celtic galley. Hispalis founded in Africa claiming iron and building wealth. Fritigernhaims razed. Neapolis grows and gets a taxman.
IBT Celts land pillager and settler within reach of our cats and a legion. Vandal raiders move. Neapolis horse->horse, Augusta Videlicum riots (??I checked it was OK, weird) Tarentum barracks->horse, Caesarea stands.

[4] 440AD. There are some weird mm issues near Milan and Ravenna. Grasslands there are mined which was not needed. They have extra food and need aqueducts which is not impossible but would be a huge waste. It would have been better to focus on mining hills there. Celtic pillager killed and slave captured. Visigoths have pillagers. Franks do not have iron. It is a good time to try to slaughter them.
IBT. Military training discovered, research to Christianity in 14 turns. Rome legion->Justinians in 22 turns. Carthage worker->galley, Augusta Treverorum barracks->worker, Antium church->HC.

[5] 442AD. Two horses upgraded to HC. Army kills pillager, legions attack Visigoth capital. One dies another kills. Cancelled RoP with Franks just in case. Theo is stupid or what? Does not want to trade Byz.Ingen. and dyes for MT and Christianity. OK, traded WM instead of dyes. Neapolis goes to build Palace.
IBT. Deva dromon->dromon (what else?), Carthago Nova dromon->dromon.

[6] 444AD. Antium grows and gets a clown. Will build church there. 3 Visigoth spears and Vandal raider dies.
IBT. Tarraco worker->dromon, Celts building SoG. This is not good.

[7] 446AD. Visigoth capital razed. Cancelled alliance against Vandals with Franks.
IBT Massilia temple->legion, Veii legion->legion, Cumae legion->legion. Celtic galley sails to Britain again. No way!

[8] 448AD. I can’t stand this. Clovis is gracious. Well, there is little that can be done under the circumstances. They served good and have to go soon. A legion which slaughtered 5 or 6 spear in Panormus finally razes the city. Vandals are down to minus 7. Moving forces to Chartres. Otherwise we lose luxury (furs) from Britain.
IBT. All more or less quiet.

[9] 450AD. Some minor battles, dromon sinks Celtic galley. Gem colony almost ready.
IBT. Franks capture Anglo-Saxon capital. Milan HC->HC.

[10] 452AD. Another Visigoth town razed. Vandal Sabratha razed. Visigoths are next. They are minus 7 also. It would be possible to attack Franks within one turn after Skullcrushers move to Chartres. The city has to be razed rapidly. Otherwise we lose furs from Britain. Gem colony built but cities are not adjusted. We have 22060 VP. There is a galley with legion and horse sailing to Pisae. And galley is indeed upgraded to dromon for free. Neapolis is 91 shields towards some wonder at 18spt. If we get Justinian’s in Rome, it would be not good to trade Christianity to our friend Theo. If she builds Justinians first, we can still get both religious wonders then in Rome and Neapolis. The only danger is that she would research Christianity by herself and when Rome builds Justinians, she would switch to Haga of StPeter’s and instantly build it. But we would get another one. So, GA is quite possible.

I did not mm cities with a new luxury and had no diplo this turn. War to Franks can be declared any time just keeping in mind that we lose furs until Chartres is destroyed. It might be a good idea to reinforce Pisae a bit with a couple of legions from Italy. It takes time to ship troops there but Caesarea was holding very well against Sassanids.

Good luck Doc, kill the Visigoths and Franks! May be you'll get the Anglo-Sax aslo. Then, it might be possible to settle the Western Europe.

Death of Vandals:
RBC12I_Vandalsdie.JPG

Woot! Great work, CA and akots. We're on the home stretch...

As a note- I'll be out of town 3/12-3/15; if I come up in a game during that time, feel free to skip me.

Don't tell me you missed the enire discussion about Port Said and bringing a Settler there to seal off Africa?

Yes, I read it but first, I don't like the idea because East Rome is still alive and we would jam their possible traffic. Second, it was too close to Alexandria. What if it would flip to East Rome? You can build another city there if you wish. Third, current location is closer to colonies and Caesarea in case the city falls, so in military terms, it is a better spot to have a base. I have spent about 10 minutes thinking where to settle, so it was not done in ignorance.

First, the save:

Restore the Glory of the Western Roman Empire!

Wow, that looks really completely different now! Guess we were by far too anxious during the opening turns...Visigoths gone, Anglo-Saxons gone, Franks down 4, GA in 6 turns – no more Leaders, sorry.

Any idea what this is?

What2.jpg

Minor MM. Stop the Worker near Tarraco and move him to build a Horse Colony – Byzantium will give Dyes for Horses (+ Alliance against Huns). Sell them our only Horses.
This doesn’t change that much – lowering Lux would need Clowns in some core cities, but Carthago and Milan will celebrate our first WLtKD! And that deal is pretty safe; if they lose Caesarea, they still have one source near Cyrene. Main reason of course is that we won’t get much trouble if we fail to take Chartres in one turn.
Trade WM around (as in any other turn)

Enter.
Huns and Ostrogoths sign peace.
Ravenna (HC) -> Settler
Aquilaea (Church) -> Legionary
Pompeii (Garrison) -> Garrison
And we should hurry:

SoG.jpg

Turn 1: 454AD
Healing turn, fogbusting. Kill a Visigoth Raider.
IBT: Lots a Franks move N to the last AS city.

Turn 2: 456AD
Horse Colony; not much else
IBT:
Osthros sign peace with Celts and AS
Cartage (Dromon) -> HC

Turn 3: 458AD
Healing completed, Armies march to Battlefields. Spot a Celtic Galley, but cannot bombard it; will shadow.
IBT:
Celtic Galley heads for England.
Ravenna (Settler) -> Legion
Corduba (Legion) -> Legion
Antium (Market) -> HC

Turn 4: 460AD
Bombard and sink Celtic Galley. Kill Visigoth Raider.
IBT:
Augusta Treverorum (Worker) -> Legion
Tarentum (HC) -> HC
Wltkd in Antium – didn’t I tell you we want a Market there ?
Cumae (Legionary) -> Legionary

Turn 5: 462AD
Corduba Legionary kills Barb, Vet.
Final assault on that Visigoth town in the hills (forgot the name). Loose an Elite Legionary, no promotions, but:

Vandals.jpg

Not many VPs gained; we’re at exactly 24k.
Anglo-Saxon are least now, with 6 lost.

IBT: Franks destroy the AS
Massilia (Legionary) -> Settler
Augusta Emerita (Legionary) -> Legionary
Veii (Legionary) -> Legionary
The Huns are building Justinian’s Leadership :D (btw, ours is due in 10)

Turn 6: 464AD
Frag Barb Camp in Spain. Kill top Barb of a desert camp.
Eastern Rome has lost Ephesus again, and leads the charts with 5 cities. Will start to reinforce the troops down there.
Decide to gamble, and give the Ostrogoths Iron for a MA against the Huns, since those can build HC now. That means, we’ll have to face real enemies if they turn against us. But they have enough Iron now nearby anyway, and we could handle them, plus if we need to destroy them, we’ll at least get some VPs.
IBT:
Franks return from the N.
Celtic and Frankish Galleys show up near England – I hope the Franks will settle there, easy target.
Milan (HC) -> HC
Aquincum (Legionary) -> Legionary
Tarraco (Worker) -> Dromon

Turn 7: 466AD
Frag Gaul Camp in the desert. Sucessfully bomb Celtic Galley.
IBT:
Sassanid Spear-to-Pillage shows up. Celtic Galley returns.
Aquilaea (Legionary) -> Legionary
Franks start Justinian – and they have Horses near Kiel unconnected!

Turn 8: 468AD
Kill Sassi Spear
Ok, time to get rid of Franks. Invest 26gp to investigate Chartres – no chance, there are 1 vet, 3 reg Spear and a Raider.
Declare.
HC Army kills 2 Spears at Chartres, promotes. Kill Spear at Paris.
Losing the Furs is no big deal, have to hire a total of 3 Clowns, and Carthage will even stay in WLtKD.
IBT:
Franks and Ostros sign peace
Few Frankish Raiders show up. Frankish Galley sinks our elite Galley.
Antium (HC) -> HC

Turn 9: 470AD
Destroy Paris, defended by 3 more Spears.
Destroy Chartres, lose a Legionary. Furs back online.
Kill 3 Spears at Marseilles.
Kill 3 Spears at Avignon, lose a Legionary.
Stupid Cats at A. Treverorum go 1-3, have to send the Legionary out; promotes to Vet.
Fat-finger and rush Dromon in Eburaceum :smoke: (thought it was Deva, with a Frankish Galley near). Complete waste, sorry. Rush a complete Legionary instead – we can mildly afford it, with 350gp in the pocket. And Britain can need another defender.
Christianity will come in, allows me to switch most Scientists to Taxman.
IBT:
Lots of Frankish movements, nothing threatening.
Christianity – eenie-meenie-moo – Siegecraft.
Eburaceum (Legionary – at least, it’s a Vet) -> Dromon
Massilia (Settler) -> Legionary

Turn 10: 472AD
Destroy Avignon, 15gp.
Destroy Marseilles, 2 Slaves, 16gp, Legion and HC promote to Elite.
Sucessfully bomb a Celtic Galley.
Viroconium founded, Wealth producer (and pulls in another Horse).
Yippie, we’ll get the Church in 6 or less turns (still mining there), and Justinian’s in 6, too!
Btw, ERome cannot cascade to one of the Churches, they have neither Gold nor Silver

Notes:
  • There’s a Frankish Galley near the Isle of Man, be prepared for a landing.
  • The Legionary at Kiel should not attack, but take care of the Horses.
  • Our Eastern Forces are healing at Aquincum, consider not throwing them all against the Franks (remember, the Huns have HCs)
  • Which Church? I vote for Hagia Sophia, we have Temples anyway in all important cities – and we could build the Basilika during the GA as well.
  • The Worker in the Dromon could go to Carthage, with a WLTKD this city is worth it. The Legionary in Viroconium is not needed there, he waits for a ferry to Africa.
  • See no reason why we shouldn't keep the Frankish cities, especially one at the coast. Unfortunately Chartres was whipped down from size 3 to 1, so it was autorazed.
  • Left 2 units unmoved: The Settler in Massilia –decide where the next Wealth city should go, 2SE of the fat-fingered Legion nearby looks good (Wheat); and the Horse in the desert – it’s simply your choice if you run away, or attack/shadow the Barbs
Standings: WRome 26310 ERome 20800 Sassanids 4880
ERome down 5, Franks down 4

Enjoy your turns, they will be the best we have! Couldn't imagine we’ll manage to trigger a GA...

Don’t think I’ll have a turn again. Thanks a lot, this was really one of the most intense games I’ve played :goodjob:

grrr Forum ate my original reply :saiyan:

Good solid turns Doc. We're rolling now!

Roster:

Caesar_Augustus (On Deck)
akots
Doc Tsiolkovski (Just Played_
Corrado (AWL March 12th-15th)
HannibalBarka (UP - approaching drop)

If HannibalBarka doesn't post a 'got it' within 24hrs of Doc's turnlog post, he'll be dropped and I'll grab it. Looks like you might get another turn after all Doc :)

Timing for the wonders is great! Hope it is possible to get all three of them. Actually, wonders make a fine addition to score. Better than a bunch of spears and raiders. Everything looks very good and promising. The future is bright. Not only the civilization is saved but many unworthy tribes are wiped out! East Rome is a nonsense in this game. I guess we played slightly incorrectly underestimating the possibilities of leaving barbarians alone so that they can connect iron and build more cities and units. That would allow to get more VP from them in the long run.

lurker's comment:

Doc: The thing you pointed to in your post is an outpost. It allows you to see the surrounding squares without the fog of war and can be made by workers after construction IIRC.
