A random event triggered a 10 years old memory of Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" and I got a strong urge for some similar (but more modern) book.

Do you have anything to reccomend?

Someone on Poly also reccomended it so I guess it'll be my first choice. Thanks.

No problem.

I still have a copy of it, it is a facsinating book.

This is a pretty good book by Gary Paulsen called The Transall Saga which i thought was pretty good.

AoA got the best one. It may be out of print, but there was a sequal a couple years back which launched a promotional reprint.

On the Beach by Nevil Shute may or may not be what you are looking for. Its a great book, but its about the end of life, not about civilization from the ashes. Brin's The Postman, which was made in to an awful Kevin Costner movie, is worth a read. Brin's work generally tends to deal with ecological repair. David Weber's Empire from the Ashes trilogy is being reissued, and the third book is somewhat in that vein, though very militaristic.

PS Obviously not more modern, but the two Robinsons are worth a look: Swiss Family Robinson and Robinson Caruso.

There was a book written by a French guy titled "Maleval" that is pretty good.

Lucifer's Hammer (I think Jerry Pournelle wrote it) is a good one as well, deals with an asteroid, not nuc winter.

But Alcibiaties had the best one. Lord, I haven't read that in ages. I am going home and try to find it in my stacks of paperbacks.

I read Lucifer's Hammer a while ago. Great book.

(I think Jerry Pournelle wrote it)

Together with Larry Niven.

("A Canticle for Leibowitz")

I'm having trouble with the language. All those Church&Christianity related words...

Muddle through, it's a true classic. ;)

Lucifer's Hammer is good, but nothing can beat the father of modern science fiction, Jules Verne! "The Mysterious Island" is still one of the best books out there.

But go read LOTF too ;)

Here is another one. There is a trilogy of books about a small American community, an island actually, that gets dropped in 3rd or 4th mellenium BC, about the time of the Tojan Wars and Abram's journey to Egypt. They have the knowledge of industry and the beginnings of the means of production, but they have little food no resource base.

The author is S M Stirling, and the first book is called Island in the Sea of Time
