Hallo everybody,

whenever I play on large maps, in the late game, when the world is getting to be explored, the game is getting terribly slow, so I step back to Civ IV... What is your experience with hardware requirements for such maps? What could be the bottleneck at my system?

System Spec:
  • Civ V @ Steam
  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64 with latest Updates
  • MBO with AMD Chipset Class 880
  • AMD Quad Core 4 x 3,6GHz
  • 16GB RAM
  • 115 GB SSD (Swap File disabled)
  • 2 x Radeon HD5770 in Crossfire

Hope to have an interesting discussion
best regards

Definitely the CPU, get Bulldozer when it comes out or high end SNB

Depends, is the ram ddr2 or ddr3?? what architecture is the cpu? honestly though i see nothing here that can bottleneck it. Are you playing with 8x AA? because that could be the problem

Game speed problems is almost always CPU needs improvement

The CPU is quite new, it is Phenom II X4 970 (4 x 3,5GHz) A Phenom II 980 would not really solve (4 x 3,7)the problem? Maybe a Phenom II X6 1100T?

RAM is DDR3 (always if you have Chipset type 880).

The following details from my setting I wrote down
DX10/11
3240 x 1920 @ 60Hz (three vertical 24" in eyefinity)
AA: 2 x MSAA Full picture

further settings (in order of appearance):

high
high
medium
minimum
medium
high
medium
medium
high

I can forward you a game save, if you are interested
best regards and thx for your replies so far

But when that is the case it is usually due to a bad CPU, he has a fairly good one, and he clocked it to 3.6. The CPU wouldnt be his bottleneck.

Are your 5770 drivers all updated? are they properly xfired? It seems to me this is a software problem, as your system is very good.

The system is completely updated, CPU is clocked with 3,5 (not overclocked 3,6). The VGA-Driver is Catalyst 11.6. The Cards are hardwired bridged and Crossfire is enabled at AMD Vision control center.

Well then if it is a hardware problem it would be the CPU, but i doubt it. I cant help you any further, sory.

may I forward you the game file? Its 3MB ( I cannot upload here) and my E-Mail is dschentelmen at gmx.de

I wouldnt know what to do with it. Try asking some of the moderators here, or a more techy user.

Your issue is your MASSIVE resolution with only 2x 5770, and only 2GB video ram

so you would recommend an VGA update?
would 2 x HD6950 (450€) fix the problem or only reduce?
Or should it be 1 x 6990 (600€) or may be two?
Generally, this resolution is really a pleasure, I also play CIV IV on it. It is new gaming.

Either of those would be fine. the 6990 is just two 6970's put together, and the 6950 and 6970 are very similar, you should be fine with either xfired 6950's or just on 6990, two 6990s is overkill If the problem persists after a gpu upgrade like that. then idk what the hell is wrong.

Hmm, before I pay 600Bucks required for an update of only one application, I would like to check that before...
How can I determine the fps-rate of my system under CIV V?

Civ V eats CPU clocks faster than anything, even an i7-2600k @5.5GHz wont prevent a slow down

So in four years, when CPUs have quadruple power, it will be possible to play lage naval maps on CIV V?

CIV IV was fine, what did they improve to require so much Flop-Power?

Thx and best regards!

Hmm, no reply for two days so its time for a short conclusion:

  • There is no regular Processor to maintain a fluid game at a large map
  • Two linked upper medium class graphic cards are not sufficient to drive a modern resolution

This game is either, badly developed or four years to early introduced.

I want:
  • play on large maps
  • play with at least medium video settings at sufficient game flow
  • A Monitor with 4MPixels is state of the art, nothing highly sophisticated

The game developers should consider, not to increase the hardware requirements again at next game, especially, when this performance requirements, have no im pact on the game flow, just for decoration

I thank everyone, who supported this thread and supplied interesting informations.

Best regards
Georg

There is no doubt that this game was coded and developed badly. But, with that said, a 4Mpixel display, is hard for two 5770's to display. Also, i have one 5850 and an i7 930 and i can play large naval maps on high settings with relatively no lag except when loading turns. It seems to be a hardware problem for you.

so the next hardware upgrades available are:
- Phenom II X4 980 (or would you recommend X6 1100T?)
- two crossfired 6850 instead of two 5770.

it will be September, I will post the results here
