Registered Names

I look through the members section a lot and i see tons of names with zero posts. That really pi$$es me off, because i could of had the name i wanted, WildFire, without the 444 part. There should be a rule that if you don't visit the forums in like 2 months (or somewhere around there) you lose your registered name. Exceptions could be made, like going away for college or something like that.

I think this topic has come up before, Wildfire (or should I say, Wildfire 444).

From what I recall, some folks will register their aliases at multiple sites even if they have no intention of posting there simply to preserve that particular name. Think of the chaos there would be if, say, there was a Thunderfall posting at Poly who wasn't the same benevolent dictator of CFC.

Hmmm... think of the chaos ... gotta go!

mainly some people just sign up for the updates from this site and also having 20000 plus members looks better than the amount of posting members

I was thinking about bringing up this topic, here.

Yeah, I think it'd be better to have a real reflection of posting members, not just people that have signed up. I mean, we may have 23,000 members. But it'd sure look really good if there was something on the top, if we removed 0 post count posters: "We have 10,000 POSTING members!"

You also need to take into account the fact that registration is required to use the forum's search feature. Lots of people signed up probably just to use the search or to vote in polls.

Most forums usually don't purge inactive users because a high member count looks good. It's true that the bigger forum you have, the more easier it is to gain new members.

Just be creative and you shouldn't have problem coming up with a cool name!

My first reaction was to say, no way CG, there cant be THAT many posters. Then I saw for myself and saw that there are currently 10553 posting members.
Now why did I just waste my time doing that? I seem to have WAY too much free time, and yet can never be able to play civ3

Atleast 1 out of 2 people like to post. And there's always people who come just to search for something, or just get the news.

TF, can't you find out when someone last visited the forums? If so, couldn't you delete any users who have never posted, never voted, never PMed, and haven't visited in the last two months? (Of course, that may be hard to do, and it may not eliminate too many people.)

You can do that WillJ. When u send a PM to someone, and you go to message tracking, it shows the last time that they were on. We could use that instead of the zero posts idea.

And then you can report it to Thunderfall, and he can check up on whether they've used the search function, voting, or whatever. If it has time. And then he can purge inactive members then.

Actually I can purge inactive members very easily, but I don't want to do it for the reason specified in my above post.

And there are posters who binge post. Some can't post here for extended periods, but when they do, they make a massive contribution. Eg. Starlifter (do a search for his posts, and you'll see what I mean)

@ainwood: I have no idea of what you are saying.....No one does that here!!!

@Thundy: Couldn't you make special exceptions for people like WildFire? If the orginal account was created a year ago and has zero posts why not give WildFire444 the WildFire account? If someone just registered to search or vote in polls then they can make a new account and not worry about the name.

@WilFire444: You can do like I did with my first account and tack your birth year at the end of the name or like my current account name, use something that is similar to your last name....it doesn't work well for all those Smiths out there.

A while back, someone posted a topic like this, and I had a lot of time on my hands (too much) and found out the exact number of members with zero posts. I could always do it again...
