im a little confused about religion in civ4. in my current game all my cities have confucianism practicied there, it was the religion i initally founded and it is my state religion and i can see the benifits this brings my civ from the religious advisor screen. most of cities also have buddhsim practiced there which was spread from my neighbour civ. this neighbour is now requesting i convert my state religion to buddsim but what advantages would this bring him if i did? would i get any benifits if i demanded he converted to confuciansim?
any help appreciated!
ta,

if 2 civs have the same religon they like you more(diplomatic bonus +1 or +2 or +3 or +4)issabella will give you a plus 4 which means if your not her state religon she HATES you

If you switch to Buddism, they will like you more. However, If you have less cities with Buddism, or less Buddist temples/cathedrals, that will hurt you a bit. I am pretty sure your Confuscian holy city will get a +5 culture/turn bonus only when Confuscianism is your state religion.

If you demand that he switches to Confuscianism, he will like you more if he switches. He may also spread confuscianism himself, which will lead to more gold from your shrine (you did build the shrine, right?)

I'd start getting my forces ready... theres going to be a war ;)

If you haven't already, start sending missionaries out and spread your faith, maybe you can then get them to convert. If you have built a shrine you will get income from all cities with your founded religion.

its too late! he just declared war on me the c*nt, we been loyal friends all this time aswell but he says their just aint room for the both of us, should of guess it really as its old ceaser!

i have the shrine built. so i guess if i did convert to his religon then i would lose some gold from my shrine but less likely he would have declared war? all my cities have his religion spread to them now too so would of only been a bit of gold i would have lost, should of done it!

If he is the founder of buddhism then look if he has a shine, if so make that your target city. If/when you get it you will receive income from all of the buddhist cities as well as your confucianism ones (as long as you have the relevant shrine you get gold from all religions there). Yeah, if you had converted he probably would not have decleared war, but hey who wants to 'fall under the sway of a heathen religion'?

Actually, you still get shrine income even if it is not your state religion, unless I am mistaken.

Yes that's correct, you can (I often do) have more than one shrine be them captured or created, and you get income from them all. You can only have one state religion though of course.

true, its a good excuse to finally try and steal some of his cities anyways!
will aim for his nice shrine ones ;)

There's no benefit to him. It's just a way that they artificially made religion create diplomatic tensions. If you were playing multiplayer, nobody would ever give a damn what religion you run.
