I found this interesting thread on the Civ 1 forum:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=151124

So I thought to repost it here so it can gain a broader audience. The question, how old were you when you first played civ? As for me, it was back in 92' when I was in 8th grade (junior high). My friend gave me copies of Civ 1, simcity, and X-wings, I installed all the games, but was hooked on Civ 1 right away. I remember sitting in class, checking my watch, and thinking about how I am going to shoot those pesky Mongolian horsemen with my shiny new tanks after school. :) Another benefit of Civ is that it forced me to learn to use computer, from editing all those sound and loadup settings in Autoexec and config. Before that, I was afraid to copy files to another folder under DOS since I didn't want to mess up the computer.

I started at 9. I was at the house of an older friend when he showed it to me on his Mac. Bought Civ2 for Windows a few days later. Been hooked ever since.

:D I've played the Civ series for five years now.

I must have been 13. Civ 1 in 1991. I actually skipped school a couple of times just to play. I later found out that I wasn't the only one!

I don't remember skipping school for civ 1, but I was glad a couple when the school was cancelled due to snow storm, guess what I was doing for those days. Of course, it didn't work out as well when we had a blackout along with the storm.

I started with SMAC in 1999, when I was 10; I never really played; my dad and my uncle did that and I "helped".

I got Civ III in 2001.

My first Civ experience was Civ1 for the SNES back when I was 10 or so.

Yes, I know the SNES version was terrible, but back when I got it I thought it was the greatest thing going. I begged my parents to buy a PC JUST so I could play Civ2, which I loved even more.

Then theres the other extreme. I saw my first Civ game Christmas 2005 when a couple of my coworkers were board at work and started playing a LAN game on their Laptops. I Lerked over their sholders for a week or so. It took another 6 months to get a chanc to play when my Son-in-Law and his friends started playing last summer. i set in for one game and was killed in no time. I got hooked and my Daughter bought me a copy for FathersDay. I have been playing ever sence. By the way I am in my 6th decade and a first time player.

I started in April 2003, when I was 15

Hello,

I was eleven and it was on a friends computer. He just got this new game and we played together. I was at him quite often then. I just remember that we found a city somewhere in the extreme upper north (all ice around) just to see what happens. (in those days there was no maintenance :) )
At the end we crushed the Russians, they were the last civilization left and the toughest.. those were the days
.. When I was 12 got my first own PC .. the first game was civilization.

I could play from morning until night with just short breaks .. oh god Civ ruined my whole life, because I can still play from 8 am till 4 am with only short breaks and without any food.. if i find the time nowadays...

It was 1993 and i was doing my military service and a fellow soldier installed civ 1. That was it ! I remember we were playing 8-10 hours every night.

I was 24

I played Civ1 on the day it came out, having pre-ordered a copy after reading about it in a now defunct british gaming mag called "ACE". Funny, but I knew even looking at the pre-release screenshots that this would be a game I would love. I'm now 36 and I have been playing civ more or less constantly for the past 15 (16?) years ... incredible, if you think about it. It's pretty much the only PC/video game I play.

Civ I on the PC when it came out (91?) so I would have been about 28 I reckon.

Good to see lots of you young'uns appreciate a good game! :goodjob:

Civ I was the first computer game that got me seriously hooked. I was 13 and often played the entire weekend.

It's intriguing how long it took me to figure out the most basic concepts. I thought I could choose between buying a building or a treasure :crazyeye: ! (instead the screen informed me there was not enough money in my treasure to buy the building). And it took me months to figure out that the orders I gave would be carried out by the blinking unit.
When civ II came out I knew the basics, but I never figured out good strategy by myself. When I learned that a schoolmate played emperor I was flabbergasted. How was that even possible? It turned out he built multiple settlers in every city! I usually built 3 or 4 cities during an entire game, I didn't feel I needed more. In fact, I didn't feel building cities was that useful at all, better build units to capture cities!
