Currently we are researching Chemistry and on the path twards Democracy. There are five tech routes to cover, two of the routes are required for advancement while the other three leads to optional techs.

I would propose that we should have a research path to Military Tradition so that we will have more powerfull cavalry units to use in future wars. In the mean time, we can have a research path up to physics and branch out to ToG or Magnetism.

I have attached to this post our current research tree.
Note, the mod that I have has different color indicators (Its the metalic graphic interface mod)
Blue means we already researched the tech
Red means we have not researched the tech
Green means that this tech is open for research or (if in a sequence to democracy as shown) is in a queue.
Yellow means we are researching this tech

Errr - I was pretty sure we were researching Education. That was the problem, the Persians already have it so we will soon get it from the Great Library, so which do we do?

1. continue research on Education
2. stop research until we get Education free from the Great Library
or
3 reseach something else to allow us to get Education free from the Great Library.

i say go straight for Millitary Tradition. once we get it, we can switch over to getting democracy and then get the nesseccery techs to leave the MA.

I feel that we should finish our designated research path, then go for MT and your idea CG, but we need to finish our current path and get education.

We are already researching Education and have invested several turns already.

We have already decided to research Education leading to Democracy, but

The Persians have Education so we will get it from the FREE from the Great Library very soon.

1. If we carry on researching all the GOLD we spend on research WILL BE WASTED (95gpt wasted, if it still takes 8 turns = 760 gold possibly wasted)

2 If we STOP RESEARCH until we have it we will make LOTS OF GOLD (203gpt gained, if it still takes 8 turns = 1,624 gold gained!)

3. if we research something else (Chemistry is our only optiom from CGs chart) we get a different tech in the meantime, but at 17 turns to research Chemisty that is likely to be longer than it takes us to get Education so will DELAY the route to DEMOCRACY.

I am not talking about changing what the people voted for, but making the most of a situation and using it to make money.

I think in CG's screenie Yellow must mean able to be researched but not in the queue as we are definitely researching Education in the save I posted after the last session and the numbers are correct for the remaining research times.

Isn't Education the tech that makes the effect of the Great Library obsolete? Unless that has changed under Conquests, then we must see our research of Education through to the end. After that, our options open considerably.

I haven't looked at the save for awhile, so I may have more input on this later.

I would agree with padding our bankroll until we get education for free from the great library.

I haven't done any modeling, but strongly suspect that Democracy as a government wouldn't gain us anything. That path does open up a few wonders though, so we should continue in that direction unless the people decide otherwise.

Hello....is anyone listening out there? The Great Library is now obsolete!

Persia already has the tech, which leads to the crossed-out picture of our Great Library in the Education box. Just because we don't have the tech yet doesn't mean we can ignore the universal truth: we have to research Education all the way through.

I am bit surprised that I have had to say this twice.

Well, that's about the dumbest thing I have ever heard (directed at game designers, not you guys). Where is the challenge in that??

Care to provide a link to this depressing information? It is almost too unfathomable to be believed.

Also, I could have sworn that we were, at some point, able to halt a rival civ's use of the GL by discovering Education first. If I am wrong, then let's go ahead and get this tech on the cheap by taking advantage of a major flaw in the game design.

Allright, I just found this somewhere, but it is embarrassingly LAME.

Sooner or later, hopefully later, you will get Education from the Great Library. It is the last technology you will ever get from the Great Library. You will have to start research again in order to progress. Progress you must, unless you can conquer the world before the middle of the Industrial age. The era of big budget spending and unlimited military is over (for now, though maybe you can resurrect it later).

So go ahead and pull out the crutch. I am in....

Continue on to Democracy, but at zero research until the Great Library gives us Education. Once we get education, kick research up to max for Banking and Democracy.

Democracy is a potential gold-mine, as the other civs will surely trade us vast sums of money for that technology. This will cripple their economy, and boost ours! This will allow us to rapidly research the next techs, and upgrade our units to modern troops.

I would like to see a quick path to Military Tradition AFTER we finish the path we've already decided upon. I suggest a detour or two, however. Researching Astronomy will allow us to build Copernicus' Observatory, the
most desired wonder by the citizens in Priapos. This will help boost the research of Fanatikos and maintain our technological lead over our rivals.

Persia's probable research path will be astronomy->banking->democracy (I wouldn't be surprised if they went for chemistry before democracy). I wonder if we would research banking before Persia (and if we did, what they would pay us for it). On the other hand selling a monopoly chemistry probably wouldn't buy a monopoly banking and astronomy (a weakened France would take some time to buy astronomy).

By the way, democracy would save 17gpt in unit costs now, save 5gpt (not counting building multipliers) in corruption, and give Priapos 17spt instead of 16.

Right now this is a tough desision and will post up a poll. Though (IIRC) switching tech at this level would cause us to lose our invested research.
