Research from huts - Is this normal?

I just started my first ever game playing Catherine, on Epic speed, with the Smartmap mod. It seems that about 50% of the goodie huts I pop have a free technology. It's 3130 and I already have 9 technologies. Another 10-20% give me another scout! My horde of scouts is also beating back every single animal attack. I was just wondering if this is normal for an epic game, or if the Smartmap mod is completely skewing things in my favor. Difficulty is (supposedly) set to Monarchy, so I have no idea what's going on.

yes it is, its been like that since Civ2 :) I haven't played Civ1, but that feature has been in the series from the start.

Sometimes the huts will give you alot of techs, sometimes not much of the time.

although 50% does seem a little skewed, you probably should check with the author of the mod by posting in that thread or posting about it in the Customization and Creation board.

I play on tiny maps and I'm on Chieftain though, so I'm not really sure.

and is this your first time playing Civ4? you must have some good experience playing higher levels in Civ2 and/or Civ3 to start the game on Monarch level. unless you meant the first time playing Catherine, I may have misunderstood.

Yeah, it was my first time playing Catherine...or Epic speed...or with Smartmap. Not that I'm complaining about massive amounts of techs , it just feels a little unfair.

Nice! I rarely get techs from huts. Even with Scouts, it's usually gold (just more of it than a Warrior gets). In fact, in my games, this seems to be what I usually get from huts (in order of frequency):
  • Gold
  • Maps
  • Experience
  • Technology
  • Barbarians

Did you get sucked into the "it seemed like Monarch was the appropriate starting difficulty" trap? Well, just a heads up. It's a good idea to jump into Noble, because that's the level with no handicaps on either side. As for your luck, have you considered playing the lottery. I recently did a check on the XML, and I found this:

<GoodyType>GOODY_HIGH_GOLD</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_LOW_GOLD</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_LOW_GOLD</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_LOW_GOLD</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_LOW_GOLD</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_MAP</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_MAP</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_WARRIOR</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_WARRIOR</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_SCOUT</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_EXPERIENCE</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_EXPERIENCE</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_HEALING</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_TECH</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_TECH</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_BARBARIANS_WEAK</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_BARBARIANS_WEAK</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_BARBARIANS_WEAK</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_BARBARIANS_STRONG</GoodyType>
<GoodyType>GOODY_BARBARIANS_STRONG</GoodyType>

This means a 2/20 chance of getting a tech. To get even 5 free techs runs you at 0.001%, now go and talk to the people who've lost 99.999% odds and you'll get the other end of the story.

Yeah, but remove the barbarians, because scouts don't pop up barbarians and you get 2/15

A question: I didn't pay below noble with the patched game, but I played the second easiest, I don't recall the denomination, and sometimes I was able to pop up settlers, I noticed that with the unpatched game in Noble does not pop up settlers. So, does the patched game (1.61) pop up settlers below noble?

And does the chances change depending on the difficulty level?

(I know, there are two questions :D )
