I had 5 cats attacking a city on a hill. I was attacking from a square with my culture. All 5 cats in a row were able to retreat (Longbow was defending). None of the cats had any flanking promos, just the usual double collateral or city raider. Is the fact that I was attacking from my culture, that made it more likely for the cats to retreat?

you got lucky, that's all
You had 0,1% odds for this, and it happened.
check again, maybe your last 2 actually won the fight;) .

more like 0.0076% chance...

Nope - it was definitely a retreat in every single case. I wish I made the save right around that time. I do have saves preceeding that event by a few turns, but it's a pitboss game still in progress, so until it's over I can't just start replaying it. In two weeks or so I should be able to do that - and I'll post the saves here. What I can do is post screenshots of the combat log - does anyone know if I can access it outside the game?

then it's just the 1 out 1000 situation where this happens. should help you win this game ;)

The likelihood of this happening is lower than .25^5 btw.

0.25^5 is the chance for retreat given your unit lost the combat

For example, if each cat had a 10% chance of winning the combat, then the chance that all would retreat would be:

0.9^5 * 0.25^5

Since the later cat attacks probably had a reasonable chance of success, I would say you were very "lucky" indeed to have all 5 retreat

cats have 25% withdraw? i thought it was 15% :(

If I remember correctly - the chances of success ranged from 0.0% for the first catapult to the lower teens in case of last one. Again - it was a longbow in a hilly city, with at least one city defender promo.

I never see the exact percentage to retreat claimed by the manual/civilopedia (when i press 'g' and hover over the target). Apparently, it is adjusted according to terrain, moves left, etc specifics.

do you mean the odds of retreat displayed never exactly are those mentionned in the civilopedia?
that's normal, you only have a chance to retreat if you lose.

So a catapult, with 10% odds to win should have 22,5% odds to retreat.
(25% of retreat applied to the 90% odds of not winning).

Thanks. I was thinking that it mattered whether you were retreating to woods, open ground, up a hill, with extra moves left, etc.
