Return to 2 Civs ...

If it's not too much trouble, let's ask Imhotep to regenerate a new map and only send it to Dazz. Ideally, it would be a PBEM file so that no access to WB is possible. Sorry again...

We can use this map to experiment with to ensure that we can get the game set up with the civs in the proper locations.

Great Dazz! You all know I am chasbolt at gmail. If not, you do now.

You open the zip file and grab the file and move it into the scenario folder for Civ IV. When you start the game you choose that scenario for the PBEM game.

Has anyone verified that all 15 civs will be on appropriate continents automatically? I would hate to get too far into the game and find out that this isn't the case.

I obviously haven't looked at the map but when Imhotep created the map, he would have been able to move all starting units to ensure they are all where they should be.

I have just looked at the setup screen and can confirm we have 5 player teams and 5 individual civs for the AI.

Therefore I see no reason to think that Imhotep hasn't placed the civs as per our request.

OK. We can use this map if everyone is cool with it.

As I said, I didn't open the map in WB nor did I notice any of the details regarding the starting location.

I agree, I just did a test by making a game from one of my games using WB and then it appeared in my scenarios with that choice and I started a set up and it was working. I think all is well. Go Dazz.

Ok. I'm away to set it up.

Although I won't know where they are positioned, I will see the identity of the AI from the setup screen as they have had to be predetermined to create the map.

I think it only fair that I announce the identities of the AI here.

Ok we have a problem unlike any I have come across before.

I created the game and played the first turn as Russia. No problem.

The game saved and asked me to send to myself as Rome.

Went in to load the Rome turn ... file not there. Couldn't find it anywhere.

I did find the Initial Save in the Auto folder ... I loaded it up and replayed the Russia turn. When the turn went to save got the message 'file already exists ... overwrite?' which I accepted.

Went to load the Rome turn ... still not there.

From ingame, the PBEM folder created for the saves is empty. When I try to open the folder out of game I get a message about the folder being in a different location or on a network !

Have ran a search on both hard discs and can find no trace of the missing file.

I am totally baffled.

Any ideas ?

Strange. I've never had that happen to me before.

Maybe the file has a strange name. Did you search for any files created/modified in the last few minutes?

I have searched everything I can think off ... all I find is the empty folder.

I cannot even delete the folder ... get the same message as when I try to open it.

I am creating the game again with a slightly different name to see what happens.

what did you call the game. I saw something like this when the game was called "PBEM ..." - totally screwed the windows path.

Ooops. I know that having '...' in the name is a big no no but when I looked I found an errant '.' in the middle of the title - must have mistyped in haste

Good news is we are off and running.

Turn has been sent to Mitch.

The AI civs are Mansa Musa, Alexander, Bismarck, Genghis Khan and that good old reliable madman Montezuma.

Like I said, I don't know where they are but I know they are in the game.

Good luck to all and may the best Russian / Roman team win #ahem# :D

Played and sent to Joe.

FYI, I could see a few tiles in the south and nowhere near any of my 2 civs... I hope it isn't Dazz' starting location...

Dazz, I'll send you a screen shot once I get the kids to bed.

I was looking at some screen shots that I took and it appears that I already know Chas and can enter diplomacy with him. For all other civs, there is a "?" after the name.

I also noticed from a screen shot that my score is "much" higher than Dazz' scores. This implies that I have something extra (e.g. land, wonder, tech or pop since they drive the score).

Please check your turn for strange things. I'll check mine when my turn comes around again.

Dazz, I'm not going to send the screen shot to you because it could end up belong to Chaz... There is a seafood resource and a visible strategic resource in the screenshot (e.g. mable or stone). Does that sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone else see areas on the map that they should not be able to see?

This has been killing me, so I opened my starting save again without making any moves and this is what I found out:

  • I know Archery in addition to my expected starting techs.
  • I can enter diplomacy with Chas, but no one else.
  • I can see a small starting area far away from my 2 civs as I mentioned before.
Something is obviously wrong here.

How should we proceed?

Hm...that must come from the moving of Civs. Obviously there was made some contact I wasn't aware of. I can edit the WB save file in a text editor though to remove the contact and the additional tech. Can't explain how that happened though...if someone can see tiles he shouldn't that comes also from moving Civs. Although I unrevealed tiles afterwards it may be I overlooked something. That map is so huge...

When I started the game I noticed that both my civs had a score of 19 ... lower than everyone else. Others scores were in the 20's and 30's.

Also noticed from the Demograph screen that troop numbers ranged from 4000 to 13000 !!!!
