revamped air-force

I'm against rebase missions not taking 1 turn. How long does it take to rebase a bomber from Andrews Airforce base too an airfield in the Balkan (does anybody KNOW (=! guessing)). You don't move a nuclear missile that easily either, let alone a helicopter.

Less than a year?

Less than a mounth?

Less than a week with enough feul?

I would be satisfied if civ4 kept a similar air unit structure as C3C but with some of the good ideas mentionned in this thread:
WWI planes
Nuclear bombers
Fighter escorts
Fighters being able(sometimes) to disengage when redlined.

Agreed. I'd like to see all units able to disengage when redline.

sir_schwick's ideas are pretty good.

Sounds good, but rather than the way you mentioned nuclear bombers, certain bombers should be able to carry nuclear bombs. You can then load a nuclear bomb onto them, and they will be able to fly a "Nuclear Bombard" mission (no other bombard missions can be flown with a nuclear weapon on board).
I agree with this, basically the same way a Nuclear Submarine works.

I'd say, if there was greater evolutionary diversity in planes, ie: more than just prop plane to jet fighter, then the last class should have almost global reach like an ICBM, due to the realities of in-flight refueling. For game purposes it might not work, but as this would be at the very end of the game, it's worth a look.

I also imagine fighters should be brought up to par in terms of precision compared to bombers (hitting the target) but far lower in terms of damage done. As is in Civ3, Fighters and Jet Fighters are absolutely worthless for hitting ground targets with any accuracy at all - all they do well is defend against bombers.

A system like SMAC's for air-units would do pretty well in Civ, I imagine, though in terms of Jets, it would be best if it was modified so they returned at the end of the turn, rather than at the beginning of the player's next turn. That always annoyed me.

i dont like the way that when two planes fight, one has to die. there should be circumstances where they will be intercepted but still manage to get away. could also allow them to complete their bombing mission but stil get hit and survive. it would mean more planes are around every turn making it more realistic and giving the game a greater need for air support

I like the idea of a fighter, but not a bomber, being able to disengage in combat from with bombers.

I think it would be a good addition to have bombers be able to be destroyed ont the return flight as well. It would add much needed depth to air combat.
