RFC Classical World

Great, I was wondering why that was commented out.

What do you think about the stability maps I posted earlier in the other thread?

rev 149

fixed the Hephthalites identity in the 550AD scenario

new regular download version also up current to rev 149

What work needs to be done to improve the late antiquity phase of the game in your opinion?

Also, while I'm seeing the Romans do better in the East, they're still having trouble in the West, against the Gauls, who ironically have their northern settlements razed by barbarians.

There are some old errors who still need to be fixed :
1.Lpqy still doesn't change its name while captured by Romans, Greeks etc., same with Pattala
2.Aargh, that Parthian spawn text with "Mithridates of Parthia" (don't know where it came from) is very annoying
3.There are two messages : one tells that Pusyamitra Sunga declares a new empire and later, another one tells that the Mauryan emperor has been assassinated by Pusyamitra Sunga... I assume both aren't needed?
4.Maybe Malta shouldn't be a lone island who is no one's border province.... the Romans and Carthage could have it as a border province

1. fixed
2. what's annoying about it?
3. the message about the assassination shouldn't happen if the Mauryans have already become the Sungas, not sure why that's happening
4. ok

just finished playing the Han up to 80AD. very fun, historic and suspenseful. got the first goal, the conquest, right on the deadline, but the other 2 seem a bit out of reach. the Romans were ahead in population in 80AD by a third while I had 16 cities, 9 with 10 pop or more so doubling them doesn't seem feasible. I'm thinking I should have kept the Tarim cities. getting paper by 100AD may be possible, not sure. has anyone gotten these goals?

as for the late game, I think the bugs are coming out. I think I'm most concerned about the Huns and Avars. I need to play a Byzantine game that goes past 400AD. every time I play them I get distracted by bugfixing or other civs.

also noticed in my Han game that Rome and Parthia were pleased with each other due to a mutual war with the Dacians so I lowered the maximum attitude bonus for such cases to 2 and lowered many other leaders attitude bonuses for open borders and resource trades

this is all in rev 150

I think I've done the pop goal with the Han before, but by farming everywhere, running oligarchy, tyranny, and agrarianism, getting both shrines and building temples everywhere for to max happiness. So I had to divert from paper to get organised religion and agrarianism, which left me with no chance of getting paper by 100AD.

In general, I think paper is at an odd place in the tech tree, which not only screws up the Han UHV but also the Yamato. There's no reason, imo, for paper to need bureaucracy and engineering, when the first paper was essentially made by crushing wood pulp. Literature and mathematics would be better precursors imo - paper itself is fairly easy to make, it was the demand for paper due to the need to record large scale writings which led to its development.

I propose we move paper back in the tech tree to require literature and mathematics, and make jurisprudence require philosophy and paper. So Paper is essentially parallel to philosophy. Make both paper and jurisprudence have the same cost as monasticism, so the total tech cost is still the same. Education can then just require bureaucracy as a precursor. Oh, and replace printing press with woodblock printing, which requires engineering and paper, as printing press is way out of the time scale of this mod.

I think that would solve the tech issues Han and Yamato have trying to get paper, and give a more realistic tech tree for the time period.

Really? Mithridates is the leader of Pontus. Arsaces is the leader of Parthia. The spawn text for Parthia should contain their leader's name, not the Pontic one...

Arsaces dates back to around 250BC, which is a century before Parthia appears in this mod. He was the founder of Parthia, but that would be like saying the leader for Rome should be Romulus, and for Carthage it should be Dido.

Jin UU is now a Heavy Spearman with +1 str

fixed Nan Yue's identity in the 80BC scenario

moved the Tang spawn to Taiyuan and changed their core to Zhao, Qin and Han with a free capital move to Chang'an

Axum UU now gets +50% vs archery to help them conquer Nubia and they start with 2 of them

fixed the Sakas starting techs in the 80BC scenario

adjusted many other starting techs

had an idea for a different Axum UP: the ability to broker techs. I will try it out and see if it can work.

new Axum UP: the Power of Trade: Technologies can be brokered

I would like to enable all merchant, missionary and pilgrim units to enter independent cities as long as you are not at war with them. this overlaps with the Satavahana UP so I'm looking for ideas for a new UP for them. all suggestions welcome

The Sātavāhanas ruled a large and powerful empire that withstood the onslaughts from Central Asia. Aside from their military power, their commercialism and naval activity is evidenced by establishment of Indian colonies in Southeast Asia.

I recommend Protector of India UP: all Satavahana units get 10% bonus against non-Indian civs and Barbarians. Non Indian can be defined as capital being outside of India...

how about this: successful religion spreading attempts generate culture in all you cities. this would help them with their culture goal

Sounds good, but only for Hinduism and Buddhism to keep it historically accurate.

Kambuja also needs some work on the techs - they don't even have Writing or Horticulture to start with, so have no chance of getting Crop Rotation and Monasticism by 300AD. Tho' given their UB and UP are both food focused, should they not have a food goal, rather than a tech one?

These are very nice ideas, srpt! I am very happy that your India mod does not stop the development of this work, I consider it very important part of RFC universe.

I noticed a few issues with Sri Vijaya:

1. They can't build Balangays
2. The first UHV doesn't check correctly - at 700AD it continues to say 'Not Yet'
3. I assume they are supposed to get the gems in the Philippines as part of their 11 luxury resource target? These currently can't be mined as they have jungle on them, so workers can't move onto them

Also, I propose Sri Vijaya should start with State Religion and Buddhism as their state religion. That reflects the historical role of Sri Vijaya and its kings as spreading Buddhism to the regions they conquered (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Srivijaya#Religion) and will also help with happiness and culture to grow cities for the population goal.

rev 155

new Saba UP: civilizations you are trading resources with are friendlier

new Satavahana UP spreading Hinduism or Buddhism to cities you do not control adds culture to all your cities

all missionaries, merchants, pilgrims and great merchants can enter independent cities and perform actions there as long as you are not at war with them

added the cites of Govapuri and Tamralipti, spawning in 70BC, and Pragjyotishpur in 120AD

changed the rivers in south China to allow for the placement of Lingling with access to Tea and Gems, Tea removed from Changsha and Shu

added Pearls near Nanhai

Balangay is now a Great Galley and can be built by Sri Vijaya at spawn

new unit: merchant ship, like a caravan, requires Sailing and Luxury Trade

gold for trade missions by Caravans, Saba UU and Merchant Ship increased
