RFC Classical World

Unfortunately, the pig pasture must be sacrificed in order to limit the number of troops in Byzantion. They are much better spent elsewhere, such as protecting the Levant. If you deem your expansion to be complete and your other borders secure, then move to the hill above this pasture. With a much later tech, you might even be able to get a fort there.

The hardest thing about Pontus is getting 3 friendly civs. However, the easiest way to do this is to get three vassal offers. And, since you are required to be a military civ to achieve the other goals anyway, it is nicely linked together.

I started with Sinope 1S and quickly took Trapezus and Byzantion. Vassalage is the only tech you really need, so no need to panic about the economy. Luckily, your UU is decent and very cheap, so I started preparing an army to get to the first victim: the Antigonids. It may take some time to get to Ephesos but it is worth it. I was lucky that I didn't have to worry about Chersonesos: barbarians conquered it and it flipped to me a few turns later. Byzantion is good for settler spamming though, not such a big difference. That's the second strength of the UU by the way: killing barbarians. Put some on the hill north of Chersonessos and NNE of Byzantion (hills + river make a hard time for barbarians) and a constant flow of slaves is a certainty. The +40 production bonus they can provide to buildings are nice and they can improve newly conquered cities. With Anatolia under your belt the next targets are Pella and Athens. Hopefully, the Romans already conquered those cities, that means an easier goal 2. I was able to take Athens and Pella, made peace, and took Tarentum (who expects naval invasions) in a blitz krieg. I didn't need the city anyway so I gave it back to the Romans later on. I teched to Military Drill too early for barracks, but I lost the possibility to create more UUs. It may be better to postpone it. After goal 2 (the city next to the fish in Cappadocia that gives a text error is awesome) just go on and increase your military strength. Vassals will come eventually. It's a tight goal however, not sure if I'm going to make it, still a few to go with 30 turns left.

Declare war on Axum as soon as they spawn. This will get you on the good side of both Meroe and Saba, who will either become friendly at that point, or vassalize, given that you're a powerful civ.

Edit: Might need to check up on Carthage's UHV for destroying Rome: it fails preemptively.

Also the annoying bug where Rome flips back to the Romans immediately on declaration of war is weird...

Romans found Spalatum on the sheep.

Indy Taxila too heavily defended for Bactrians imho. But maybe I'm playing Bactria wrong.

I made a mistake when I capitulated the Seleucids, that's an extra vassal slot that you can never get to its full potential. Because of my military strength Saba vassalized anyway, Meroe asked for the same treatment in 112 AD, just a couple of turns later than I wished for. There is a small bug, probably not a RFCCW bug but a Warlords bug in vassalization: when I vassalized the Mauryans, I met a whole bunch of new civs, including the civ the Mauryans were at war with. At the time I met them, I clicked 'would you accept this deal' and peace was made without a single turn of war.

Some more games led to the conclusion that there are several bugs in this game. Most of them are presentational and I think easy fixes. All of them based on svn version 552.

- Carthage's second goal sets to 'FAIL' on spawn.
- One of Dacia's units has a 'no art' failure, a red blob.
- The Zoroastrian teacher and missionary have no small unit picture (merijn?)
- The victory screen doesn't show Judah's goals properly.
- Probably a WIP, but loading times for new civs don't match with their spawn dates, TXT_KEY_errors and are not shown in chronological order.

Oh my god guys, I got the most awesome/terrible (depending on how you look at it...I like it) spawn as Byzantium.

I have only the westernmost part of the Eastern Empire, and have to face the mighty Sassanids! This shall be a true challenge! Time to save Rome!

Edit: It was quite a fight, but I managed to wrestle back control of the UHV portion of the empire!

fixed some things:

Dacian Falxman art
Zoroastrian Teacher and Missionary art
Carthage second goal
Judah UHV help display
Kalinka start date display

I have taken Taxila always with mercenaries. were there no good ones?

Oh, there are some good mercs, but Taxila has walls and up to 8 units defending it. I'd need a 12-stack to handle it.

Speaking of mercs, in my Byzantium game, not once did the merc screen ever have a unit. Do they "run out" after a certain date?

Edit: Completing the 3rd Antigonid UHV fails the second.

I just discoverd this mod and I have to say I like it very much.

Since then I played as Seleucids which I find very easy. As long as you get Ephesos and Athens you are save. The rest just comes by itself. Especially the great generals goal I achieved like 30 rounds before I had to.
The next game was as Ptolemy which I find not so easy when the romans declare war and they start spawning armys just next to alexandria or Jerusalem. Not much you can do about that. Still have to find a way to win.
Then I did a game as Empire Romans. First: The UHV seems to be broken since none of my goals where accomplished although the Victory screen told me I had all the necessary provinces. I suppose it only works for the Republic Version of ROme.
Then it works similar as being Seleucids. Get Athens and Ephesos. Period.
I will try the asians civs next. Hopefully they are as much fun as the Mediterranean.

Just got the game last week , It has been one of my best civ experiences thank you for making a mod on my favorite time period!

I started off by taking Kashgar, though I did not fulfill any of the UHV's I was very wealthy after my Kingdom was almost completely destroyed by the Khushans in the 50's. After that I was left as a single city civ with Kasgar and it became the most cultured city in the game. I spent four and a half centuries by following the lead of the Khusans until they collapsed, then I retook Samarkand. Then around 427 my game crashed because of the Huns (I think). It was great while it lasted. Similar thing happened with the Avars when I was playing the Franks.

Note: Is it just me or are the city graphics for most east asia civs Central Asian?

I have played into the 700's AD and have not experienced a crash in this version. Are you using the current svn version of the mod? The non-svn could possibly contain a bug crashing the game in the 400's. Such things are not unheard of in RFC:CW.

I have the non SVN version, to be honest I am not sure how SVN works

You will need to download and install Turtoise SVN http://tortoisesvn.net/

Then go into your mods directory for BtS as usual, and using the new command available for the right click called "TurtoiseSVN", select "import" and then put this link "https://projectname.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rfccwsvn/" as the URL of the repository, and that should be it!

You will be able to access the latest and most up to date version of RFC:CW, though occasionally these might be buggy of course.

I'm having some serious troubles with Egypt. Two wonders (both in Alexandria), check. Getting Alexandria to 10 or 11 population, check. But how am I supposed to get Alexandria beyond 2000 culture? Now the Mauryans survive more often, it is hard to surpass Pataliputra. This game also has a Celtic Greece which is fun to see, they're managing it well.

Once Alexandria has Library + GL you can run three or four scientists there. Use the GS you get to build the religious libraries which get you +3 culture each. With those, I managed to surpass Pataliputra around 120BC.

Also, switch out of Tyranny on turn 1. The 50% culture penalty makes the cultural goal impossible to achieve, and once you hook up the gold, dye, pearls and incense happiness is not much of an issue.

I never use Tyranny with any civ. The scientist idea seems like a good one to me but still I was behind quite a lot. In the end, Pataliputra got close to 1900 while I only got about 1000 or 1100. Alexandria only got 2 religions so with +6 each turn I should already have them in place by 250BC. Also, because of a lack of production it was seriously hard to get infrastructure in place, also because I didn't get any slaves for a very long time. Without mines Egypt is much harder than it used to be in the past. I have yet to find a balance between defending the coast from barbarians, defending the stone and gold properly and getting infrastructure in place soon enough. Maybe a more offensive approach could work next time as I only got to Cyrene and left the Seleucids and the Antigonids fight themselves.

Indeed, defending the stone at all costs is a priority, as it is the main source of production. Two spearmen, appropriately promoted, should do the job just fine. As for defending the coast, your army should focus on taking our Tyre early on, giving you a source of lumber and a city that as of the latest update has decent production. Build your navy and fishing boats there. In Alexandria, beeline for the harbor and library and then the wonders. Slaves are definitely a must. Again, spearmen on hills near your Saharan borders will do wonders, as will sitting on a forested hill with some troops in Antigonid or Seleucid territory. Cyrene, although a decent city, is trivial for the first two UHVs: only capture it if you have the spare troops, if only to deprive the Romans of a base of operations for an invasion of Egypt.

No idea how Pataliputra got to 1900 - it was around 1300 in my game with both religion and the Buddhist shrine, and Alexandria ended up around 1500. Seems like your game might have been bugged, or the Maruyans lucked into a GA somehow?

Personally I never bother with Cyrene until after the wonder and culture goals - it's just a drain on research and has poor production. Sometimes I don't even bother at all - Alexandria, Tyre, Antioch, Ephesus, Byzantium, Pella and Athens are all better and good enough for the UHV. Alexandria will get its second border pop before the Romans or Hebrews arrive, and that will get you the horses. Take Tyre asap for the dye and timber as that is a good site, raze Damascus if you get the chance to get the additional tiles for Tyre and then just sit back and wait.

To get the wonders, build an obelisk in Diospolis first thing - it combines with the Pyramids to give you 3 GE points, so that way you will pop two GEs to build both wonders - that helps with production as you can focus Alexandria on other culture buildings - give it an obelisk and library asap so culture starts building up early (after harbour for the GL). If you spend time actually trying to build the wonders then you are likely to struggle to get other culture buildings. Fortify archers or spearmen on the stone and gold and they should hold off all early barbs, and get promoted to +50% hill defence which will make them near invincible against spearmen and horsemen.

True, the obelisk in Diospolis is a must, I even used a GE to build the library in time in Alexandria to construct the GL as well. I totally forgot about the timer in Tyre, a more offensive approach (as usual in civ) works. I also forgot about Athens and Pella, probably they are worth conquering straight away, also because of the resources. I'll check it out later today.
