As my favorite civ in RFC, I wanted to share this time my powerfull strategy to make Spain as big as it was in real history.
And maybe bigger, if stability will allow it.

I did it numerous times and also one time with also whole subequatorial Africa under Spanish control. So we'll see how it goes.

Like my previous 'story' of Russia I just started a new game in 600AD without time victory and I am not aiming at historical victory.
Although I should be able to accomplish two of them easily: Found the first city in America and control all Aztec and Inca territory in 1760.
Only thing I have to do is to be the first with optics and astronomy, which is certainly possible, but also have gunpowder before encountering the Inca's and Aztecs to recieve conquistadors is my aim. (Nice touch of Rhye's brilliant mod).
To have that will bring an extra golden age in 1760, that would be cool.

But I will also colonize the Philipines before the Japanese do it or otherwise conquer it.
People tend to forget this was part of the Spanish Empire too.

Okay, let's begin.

Next post will bring the first pictures (under spoiler-buttons) with comments above them.

Episode 1 - A peaceful beginning

We start with our first 3 cities. For Bilbao I had to wait until France spawned, but it is worth the wait, you'll see.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

The Iberian peninsula is now full. I would be insane to found Lisboa.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

We get divine right, but it isn't cheap.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Lisboa, I mean, Portugal spawns.
I WOULD like to control Inca, in another way that is.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Ah, always nice to start at war with Arabia.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Same story as with the Inca and we WILL control them later...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

But we are still a peaceloving nation.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

We just spawned our first great person (engineer). We will use him for rushing guilds.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

In Spain this is supposed to be called 'Nuestra Dama', but whatever...
Maybe an idea for a modmod: dynamic wonder naming?

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

We meet Khmer with our trireme.
How can say no to those puppy eyes?

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

Our first plague.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

And there it is. Optics, our first step into world domination.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg

Will we conquer the Aztecs and Inca's with our conquistadors?
And will we be the first to found a city in America?

We'll see next episode.

Your powerful strategy would be much complemented by the razing of Marseilles and Bordeaux to start...before they flip to the French.:D
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=6696786#post6696786

I agree, allthough your link is a bit out of date. Blizzrd solution for the cities is probably the best one, though Lisbon must be captured later.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8900954&postcount=3

I assume that by now you (AP) do know that you declare war on independents by selecting an already moved unit and clicking it to move to an indy city?? Then you cancel the moves naturally.

Looking forward for this story!:)

The problem is that sometimes the indies make peace with you even after you declare war on them through your method (usually after the Spanish 3rd turn), so you get flipped automatically backwards towards Spain.
Santander is not on a river, so again, not for late game. Since we can't found Lisboa or Oporto, I think I prefer Santiago (2N of Lisboa) which captures all the seafood, Granada (or even 1W of current position to capture some more of Portugal tiles), Pamplona (after Bordeaux is razed; this city is as almost as productive as Denver) and Murcia (1E of Marseilles so as not to overlap as much with Pamplona). That way, you have 3 cities on rivers, all cities are coastal and you capture almost all the river tiles except for the silver. Later on, Paris will be free to use the rest of France to become a superproductive city.

I think his current city locations are fine except that I wouldn't found Madrid, all it's tiles can be used by the other cities and it's just extra instability and research penalty for extra cities, and no matter which city you choose as a capital it will benefit greatly from extra culture, for example Bilbao will push the French back and Santiago will push the Portuguese back but you could also capture Lisbon.

It's one of my 'principles' in RFC to found the capital on the spawn-tile. Otherwise it feels like cheating and I also try to be historical accurate.

Portugal will often vassalize to a powerfull civ like Germany or Russia, so I will not declare war on them just to capture Lisboa. Now I already have 2 'Portuguese' plots extra because of my 'superior culture'.

Maybe I'll vassalize Portugal later if they ask me to have all the land plots in Iberia, except Lisboa itself.

In that case instead of settling Seville you should have settled 3S on the sheep - no conflict with Madrid, captures most of Seville's tiles, and you need north Africa anyway for historical territory.

Early on, I wouldn't touch Africa with a 5-foot pole due to inevitable barb war elephants and an occasional camel archer, and the plague will kill whatever units you station there.
Also, if you didn't block out 2S of Lisboa, the Portuguese will found a 2nd city, and you do want to raze just 1 city, not 2, for stability purposes.
So I do agree with Sevilla but I would found it 1W to catch the fish and avoid the 2 mountains.

The only thing you need in Africa is Melilla, if you are to go for the whole sake of historical accuracy (and Casablanca, but it is not really needed). Try to get there before the French found Alger or Tunis, which I expect before 1500 AD.
On other terms, your basic aim (except Incas and Aztecs) should be Latin America, especially Argentina and Chile.
Good luck with the story! :)

Episode 2 - Conquest of the New World

In our previous episode we were the first with optics, so we are pretty sure to be the first to reach Inca's and Aztecs. Now we focus on researching gunpowder ASAP, because conquistadors are so much more powerfull than knights and they also can move trough jungle.

The title already gives it away, but let's see how it's done.

To avoid the Incan workboat our first caravel heads south towards the Falkland island(s) without touching the S.-American coast and navigate around Cape Horn.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg

The other caravel heads west towards cuba and waits there until we discover gunpowder, at least that was the plan.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

That was close! Just when we discover gunpowder, the Aztecs discovers our caravel!
Luckily we get the good stuff, but on strange locations...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

In that same year, we carefully navigate around southern Chile and gather a welcoming party for the Inca's...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

We raze the city of Yax Mutal. What a hidious name anyway...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0024.jpg

After a 35-year long war our Incan territory is secure.
Fastest conquest of Inca's ever for me, by the way.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0025.jpg

Our conquistadors from Guatemala finally reach Mexico.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0026.jpg

We meet crazy-eyes Tokugawa.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0028.jpg

Our northern troops from Florida reach Tampico and we don't want to keep a city on such a terrible location.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0029.jpg

We discover we'll going to need to kick some Japanese butt later on.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0030.jpg

We settle Mellila and Messina. If Italy was a civ I wouldn't and probably couldn't.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

We prove the world is round and recieve another movement bonus for our ships. That means one turn from Sevilla to SA with our galleons later.
Oh, and we also captured Tucume.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0032.jpg

YES! We are the first to found a city in the New World. That means our first historical goal achieved.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

After some fighting and healing and fighting again we capture Mexico City.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

The Aztecs collapse and we head for their last city which we'll keep because it's on a nice spot.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

Our 'Incan' conquistadors capture Chichen Itza easily.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0038.jpg

And finally, the 'Viceroyalty of New Spain' is established.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0040.jpg

Signing this defensive pact means we also have France and England on our side (they are vassals of Germany).

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0041.jpg

Oh, I forgot, not that anything happened, but Arabia declared war on us and now they've become scared...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0042.jpg

Next episode will be about colonizing, protecting our conquered territory from dog soldiers and more...

You probably know this, but for our spectators, he got the magic flip of his units in the New World due to his caravel not seeing land that your non-jungle-oriented conquistadors can land on. (In RFC jungle can only be traversed by the Khmer and special units like the Spanish UU) Next time, you might want to back up and go straight in 1 move for Mexico so that your units land right next to their capital.

I usually do, but now I thought it would be save to wait at Cuba before I get gunpowder. The plan was to go straight to Mexico after I had gunpowder, but Montezuma had beat me to it with a jaguar in Florida.

You're an early conqueror. Conquered Inca in 1460.
Also are you interested in fulfilling the UHV? it seems that English are interested in NA.

You should be lucky your entire force didn't land in the Miami tile, or else only your UU would be able to fight!

They did! But then I declared war on Aztecs and they moved north, because there was an Aztec jaguar on that tile.

Also are you interested in fulfilling the UHV? it seems that English are interested in NA.

No, I'm only doing the two do-able ones. I already found the first city in America and now I only have to maintain my Incan and Aztec territory until 1760. I will have a golden age then which will help me catch up technological-wise.

Episode 3 - Conquest of Southeast-Asia

Guess where our conquistadors from the New World are heading in this episode?
First we capture Kongo, but it is auto-razed, then we have a plague which also spreads to South-America.
To protect those cities from dog soldiers we are just in time to send our horsemen back...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0043-1.jpg

Singapura declares independence from Khmer. We'll take it over.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0045-1.jpg

The plague also hit Japan and they leave Raoagu undefended.
We take this city just to have all of the Philipines. (historical)

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0046-1.jpg

Also Pagan is still independent with only one swordsman, so we take that city too.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0047-2.jpg

Our tensions with Arabia have eased and they are the only ones willing to trade some tech.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0048-2.jpg

We 'liberate' New York from the Natives and return it to England. Diplomacy is giving and taking...
Also, that city will flip to America later, so it's useless.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0049-1.jpg

We continue our campaign against Japan and capture Kagoshima.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0050-1.jpg

We decide we to make peace with Japan, since they have now astronomy too and already killed a full galleon.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0052-2.jpg

Didn't know this was possible. A capital city revolting???

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0053-1.jpg

The Phillipines are now fully under Spanish rule.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0056-2.jpg

We get a great spy and try to get enough points to steal some tech from Napoleon.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0057-2.jpg

We finally settle our first cities in South-South-America.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0058-2.jpg

We need a lot of workers for our expansions.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0059-1.jpg

We found Casablanca, before we lose our only ivory to the French.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0060-1.jpg

And without a great engineer or whipping, we manage to build the Forbidden Palace in 'Ciudad de México'. This is a great relief on maintenance costs.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0062-1.jpg

We didn't had enough espionage points to steal tech from France, just one more GS and we will.
Interpol will come later.
Also, not on picture, but our remaining conquistadors and a cannon are at Patliputra and we hope to capture it soon. Two holy shrines will boost our economy.

Next episode: we are going to settle Argentina, Chile, Cuba and fill in our Mexican spaces.
At least if the peace will be with me... (fingers crossed)

You're probably going to lose a city to instability or respawn soon if you don't stop conquering out-of-historical areas... Remember what happened last time when you had too many cities?:crazyeye:

You also need the Southwest part of USA, like Los Angeles and San Fransisco, Also Milan, Sardinia & Corsica, and the Spanish Netherlands should be captured if you're set on complete control over all of Spain's historical possessions, or are you just trying to get their oversea empire?

If you want to be a Hapsburg, you also need the Burgundian possessions in France and Austria, plus, depending on your point of view, all of Germany and part of Poland. However, Austria is the only one of those in your expansion range (the stability map has it in yellow, as its part of the German core)
