RFC Europe playtesting feedback thread

Strange things are happening in the Alpha10 version, I think. Playing as Spain, I've built 6 colonies and both trading companies but still the 3rd. UHV says "not yet". Arabia is the runaway points leader, has 2 Atlantic Access and has built 10 colonies. and now I get a weird message saying "Bale (Independent) has been captured by the New Bornholm". It was actually Burgundy. See screenshot. What's going on? lol

Following my report about Spain not registering the UHV despite building 6 colonies and 2 projects, I now discover that 2 cities in the Canary Islands are not counted as islands in the Atlantic for the Portugese UHV.
And they still end up with the names of cities in mainland Portugal. Many things were altered in Alpha10, but not always for the better.

Urgh, the barbarian invasion against the Kievans is really hard! I'm not saying it should be nerfed though. Any tips on how to survive against those damned Keshiks? Guisarmiers aren't that useful... Castles maybe? But they're really long to build without stone.

Anyway, it was a fun game, though bitter when I realized I lost 5 of my cities.

Try to get Druzhinas as soon as possible. They don't require an advanced tech, so if beelined you can start pumping those from 950 or 1000 AD onwards. With a stable and barracks, a Druzhina has about 78% to win, and 5% to draw. With 15 of those, you'll be fine.

Wessel V1 is right. The strategy is to get Drujinas and later on a few Knights. With proper promotions (combat only and some medic), you go after the Keshiks and don't let them attack you and/or pillage the improvements.

Okay, thanks. I'll try another game with that strategy... Upgrading to Alpha 10b too, since I missed that update...

I'm really a poor fighter in Civ; I didn't build a single barracks/stable and had only a few knights, perhaps 3. What took me by surprise was the fact that Keshiks are light cavalry and not heavy, hence the not-so-useful-ness of Guisarmiers.

Oh, also, I really like to see the Dynamic Civ Names on the scoreboard, so I edited the main interface to show them but would you consider making that change yourself? I feel it adds some good flavor.

First of all, Arabia should have NO atlantic access!!! I've seen in most tests civs without the atlantic access resource building colonies. This is clearly an error.

But are you playing the test version or the most recent SVN version? The city names in the Canary islands should be fixed now.

It's possible that there is a bug here, but whenever I've seen some civ like Arabia building colonies it is because they have vassalized some civ with AA and are getting it from them in trade. If you have a save in which this is NOT the case, I want to take a look at it.

I'm not sure what the test version or the recent SVN versions are. I'm just playing the version of Alpha10 from the green button. Where do I download a later version?

EDIT I've just downloaded 10b. Where's the SVN version?

The SVN version is the current version under construction, the one all the coders use to add details. I guess sedna17 or JediClemente can give you instructions on how to connect to it. There are additions to the svn almost daily.

The SVN version (that is, checking out the subversion repository rather than downloading the packaged archive) should only be done by people who are willing to put up with bugs. Because it is in constant development it is even rougher than the Alphas.

That said: I'll look into the Spain UHV registering bug. New Bornholm is a dynamic name for Burgundy when it is a vassal of the Norse or Sweden.

Catholic FP thing is definitely not fixed, played as Burgundy this game and as reformation hit went to 0 FP. I have the alpha10b too >_>

I've downloaded Alpha10b from sourceforge and that won't even open for me, quoting something about invalid mod directory. So what now?

EDIT I have tested this several times. The link to Alpha10b (the green box) in sourceforge doesn't work for me. I've re-installed Alpha10 and it works just fine. Where do I go from here?

Alpha10b only fixes the Dutch Spawn date. See this post for details.

I'll have to double-check to see if the archive got corrupted for the install problem Jessiecat mentions. All of the rest of the bug fixes are in the unstable development version, which is NOT available for download in a nice package and is NOT recommended for normal alpha testers.

So this might be a frivolous complaint, but is there any chance we can change the third German UHV, the one that says you need the largest army? I mean, I admit that it's not really my playing style to just spam units. But even so, the number of units you need to build to compete with an uncollapsed Arabians is ridiculous. I had almost twice the next country down in the power rankings but Arabia had more than three times my troops count.

... or maybe I should just avoid playing Germany. :crazyeye:

Clearly the best way is to collapse Arabia :goodjob:

Marco Polo born in the city with his embassy!

Other than that, for some reason Cordoba never adopted a religion until 1422, when it switched to Catholicism. Roughly half their cities were Muslim, and half Catholic. Hopefully it's only a rare and unusual occurrence.

Its says 'have the largest army in Europe' I assumed Arabs were not part of that. In any case hit gunpowder and keep state religion for 50% unit production. I was able to both build and use my army.

I had a similar occurence while playing as France. Arabia never adopted Islam at the start, so their Cyrene to Caesarea Empire had a total of about 5 Islamic cities by the 10th century. I went into WB and placed Islam in each of those cities, and the next turn they converted, so its not a serious problem (I think). However, it seems like Arabia adopting Islam would be a given just based on incentives.
