RFC Europe playtesting feedback thread

i was able to beat Portugal's UHV on Monarch... when i cheated :P i checked World Builder and whenever i saw they were close to finishing a colony i was working on i spawned enough barbarians to pillage the improvements and delay production but not enough to capture the city :lol:
 
I've never continued a game after I've opened worldbuilder, cheating takes away the fun imo :p
I've added the spawn savepoint too, Cordoba has already collapsed.
 
I just read a book called "The Forge of Christendom" by Tom Holland about the very period in European history upon which this mod focuses. One thing that I found interesting is Holland's suggestion that "castle-building" during the feudal era was one of the factors which prevented states from centralizing, due to their being built by various lords who used them to resist the power of royal claims of fealty and terrorize the local populace. This began change with the spread of monastic christianity (France being perhaps the best example).

My suggestion is that perhaps the addition of stability with castles should be dependent on what government civic is being run. One model could be: +1 under despotism, -1 under feudal monarchy, +2 under divine monarchy, +1 under limited monarchy and no effect for a republic.

By the way, I love your mod. It's the only one I play... please keep perfecting it (especially those tricky Eastern European civs)... it's amazing!
 
Alright, we all know genoa ends up being an awesome civ, at least on viceroy and monarch.
Most of the production might that comes from them stems from an early settlement of sicily and early conquer of tunis (for me at least). Because of these two mixed with hanseatic league to feed those hard working miners, they make an awesome combo to build wonders, armies, and settlers.
Unfortunately, Genoa never seems to capitalize on these two. Whenever I play another civ, they are weak, settle Corsica and Sardinia which are alright. And NEVER get Tunis or Sicily, although I've Genoa settle very near to Tunis before. They end up always being behind in techs and often dont get Milano for hundreds of years, let alone other italian cities. I know this may not be historically accurate but its necessary to the balance of the game - Africa is NEVER settled!!!
They should have motivation to build sicily and tunis and conquer more italian cities, because right now they are really not living up to their full potential
 
Hi everyone. It looks like I may be able to get some free time around Thanksgiving and Christmas to come back to the mod. It looks like the development is in stagnation, everyone playing Civ V I presume. So I was wondering, who is still here? Sedna? Jessiecat? Micbic?
 
Sedna, micbic and merjin are still around. Haven't seen a posting from jessiecat on this forums for 4 months.

I wouldn't call the development in stagnation but it is fairly slow at the moment like it is for about 3 months. :(

Although I can't code, I will be your loyal tester to find any bugs and such. Do you feel you have a good enough feel of how to improve the mod (from your comments it seems like it).

Also I'd just like to give my two cents about moorland: it really sucks. I understand the effort to reduce areas of the map that are historically less prominent (eastern poland lithuania, finland), but it seems to go too far. In my opinion there are far too many moorland spots in England and Northern Germany (near Potsdam). It really sets back England which often doesn't prove to ever be the economic, military, and scientific superpower that it was after about 1500. I don't know if decreasing moorland is the answer, but its really a pain, its like a desert tile, and I feel like wales isn't exactly desert. Also not to rant, but there are really no mountains except in the middle of scotland, none in wales.

I think this mod is fairly close to completion though (well it seems like its close). The only really broken part is the reformation and I'm sure that will be fixed soon. Of course some UHV, UU, UB, and UPs will have to be tweaked, but i like this mod way better than either the original RFC or Sword of Islam
 
Good to see people are still interested. After we resolve the C++ issue at the svn, we will probably move to a a heavy testing mode to clear bugs and imbalances. This will require us to play MANY games, so we need many people for it. I can take a look at RFCEurope/Assets/Python/RFCEBalance.py for a bunch of "knobs" that we can use to adjust the balance.
 
I am playing a game as Arabia now. Has the crusade broken down? All crusaders enter normal diplomacy and sign peace/OB. Shouldnt it be default declaration of war?
 
What do you mean by they sign peace/OB? Only the leader of the crusade should declare war on you and then return to normal relationsship. So after the crusaders arive and do some damage or not (AI behaves badly on this), you should be able to sign peace with them of course.

If that is not the case can you please provide us a savegame just before the bug happens?

yeah i think there are some serious issues with the crusades. I don't usually go for crusades if i am a european civ. But one time i was forced to as Spain, and it ended up giving me about 8 troops southeast of rome... and noone took it over to attack Constantinople or anything weird like that. So i just transported those troops over the portugal to kill it...
 
Norse UP should add: enable trade on ocean from start. Otherwise, Iceland would be useless. I gave it to Spain once I completed the UHV.
 
Iceland isn't supposed to be useful territory; settling it is just an added challenge to make the UHV a bit harder. It was an isolated, barren, impoverished country on the fringe of relevance to European history. Maintaining a presence there should be costly, with few benefits, especially before true ocean-worthy ships can be built.
 
The main thing about iceland is that you get colonial access when settling. Apart from that it is rather useless.
 
I agree Iceland is supposed to be not very useful, but I agree with youtien that it should be possible that they can trade over ocean. So you can use the wales and ivory in your capital etc..

(IIRC, Iceland is the only area on this map where such is possible, so it isn't necessary to stick the trade over oceans to the Norse)

Not only Iceland, but also some Atlantic islands on middle of the map.

As every civ, I'll settle Puerto de la Cruz whenever possible -- settle on sugar hill (+1:)), hook banana (+1 health) and nice seafood (2 whale and 1 clam/crab), and one plain hill and AA. It provides +1 happy and health in early game, and later we can get AA and buy Belem Tower there.
