Previously on, Rome: The Conquering Empire...
Lisboa falls into the hands of the Roman Empire as it's mighty legions march across Portugese soil, obliterating all that stand before them. The situation in Portugal is becoming more dire by the day, with their men either deserting or dieing, and their top generals and officers eliminated in Roman assassination missions. Clearly Rome has the upper hand in this.
And with that, this history account will never again do something like the above ever again. I am sorry that even happened, but they assigned me drama writers for this... against my wishes I assure you.
Anyways, where were we again? Ah yes, now I remember.
General Valarius, leader of the Roman Consular Army in Iberia, readies his surviving troops to capture the last Portugese stronghold of Oporto. The Portugese roayl family has fled to that location, and Rome intends to conquer all of Iberia for it's glory and honor.
General Valarius leads the men northward, placing them across the river from Oporto, readying them for the assualt. Across the river, a multitude of Portugese levies and assorted soliders are gathering to try and stop Roma in a buffer to preserve and keep Portugal alive. A group of knights prowling in the forests east of Oporto wait for the oppurtunity to strike on the newest Portugese capital.
Construction in a variety of cities goes on as engineering guilds rise up and take over many parts of the industry in Roma. Banks are forming in many cities, providing a large amount of wealth to the Empire, and to the church as well.
Fresh troops in what was once Lisboa ready in case they are called up to help in the confrontation in Oporto. It seems highly likely that if the Portugese hold off the Roman Consular Army, they will try to recapture Lisboa, so the captured Portugese workers are kept inside of the city as well as the Roman soldier garrison.
Even more construction goes on as the Roman people seek to better their cities and countryside in a variety of methods. Unemployment in the Empire drops to below zero with an actual shortage of working hands in someplaces.
On March 14'th of year 1770, the order by General Valarius is given; storm the city of Oporto and take it by force away from the Portugese.
The attack comes at dawn, when much of the Portugese soldiers are still asleep. Striking fast and quickly, dozens in the outskirts and in lookout positions are slaughtered by Roman legionnaries.
The assualt on the city initially slaughters large amounts of crossbowmen, but the legion sent to capture the outskirts is caught in a snare and slaughtered in the streets wholesale.
Legion 13, the Wolf's Legion as it is known, drives like spear thrust into the heart of the Portugese positions, slaughtering crossbowmen left and right and recieving heavy losses before being forced to retreat to avoid a complete and utter slaughter like the legion before them.
Pikemen assemble outside of the royal palace to prevent macemen from storming it and slaughtering the royal Portugese family to prevent a massive loss of bloodshed. Valarius personally leads the macemen into battle, swinging two maces high enough and rending open Portugese soldiers left and right.
They break under the furious assualt of Roman troops. The city of Oporto is captured and the Portugese royal family executed to prevent their claim on the throne, though two members escape and head to a tiny cluster of islands dangling off of Africa known as the Azores. They present a difficulty that will grow into a vicious item of contention between Rome and the newly conquered lands of Portugal.
