Presented by Leoreth Jr. on the 3rd Global Civilization Conference
November 11, 2044
It is my privilege and honor to inform this prestigious conference on my latest discovery of Medieval Crimean Tatar scroll, depicting the siege and sack of my native city of Münster back in 1618 CE.
In our times the city of Münster is primarily known for being the residence of my much esteemed father, Leoreth Sr., which created World famous mod RFC Down of Civilization. However life was not always so peaceful in Münster. Some violent events in history have been so violent, that no accounts survived to our days to talk about them. No accounts until now, that is. As you can see below I was able to unearth previously unknown scroll depicting the horrible fate of my city in those crazy Medieval times.
In the beginning of XVII century new Khan claimed the throne in Crimea, Khan Tigranes VIII Giray. He inherited a war with German principalities started by his father Tigranes VII. Münster at that time fell under the control of nascent Dutch civilization, which was very alarmed by the savage advance of Crimean Tatars into the heart of Europe. All the Christendom was hoping that walls of Frankfurt will stop Tatars, Crimeans had less than 5% odds of attacking German Musketeers, hiding behind the walls. Unfortunately those defenders made an unsuccessful counterattack and all been killed, leaving only one unit of Longbowmen to defend the most famouse city in Germany. Upon capturing the city Tatars discovered 1 Great General and 3 Great Scientists settled there: needless to say none was spared.
Germany went downfall after that disaster, and after the fall of Aachen surviving German principalities agreed to become vassals to Crimea. This created an outcry in Europe. Second strongest state of those time, Venice, with her Serbian vassals, declared a Holy War on the Khan. Holland followed the suit, against vehement protest of major of Münster, which was the closest Dutch possession to the advancing Tatar army.
In November 1618 Crimean bombards successfully bombarded the city, leaving 2 regiments of Musketeers and 1 regiment of Longbowmen in the great disarray. Tatars however did not have any other modern weapons. In the age when most nations already had Pistoliers, Tatars still relayed on bow and arrows. Their veteran status, however, compensated the lack of adequate weaponry. Crimean Chambuls came crashing city defenders, followed by Longbowmen and Macemen. Holland could not save Münster! But Khan Tigranes VIII did not live to see what happened next with Tatars in Holland. Such is the fate of all the conquerors: they die, but the cities they destroy come to live again and acquire new glory thanks to their inhabitants!
I don't know. I haven't downloaded a new version of 7zip in 2 years as I've never had any problems. I guess I'll uninstall the current version and downloaded a new version.
CLIMATOLOGISTS call it the Little Ice Age; historians, the General Crisis.
During the 17th century, longer winters and cooler summers disrupted growing seasons and destroyed harvests across Europe. It was the coldest century in a period of glacial expansion that lasted from the early 14th century until the mid-19th century. The summer of 1641 was the third-coldest recorded over the past six centuries in Europe; the winter of 1641-42 was the coldest ever recorded in Scandinavia. The unusual cold that lasted from the 1620s until the 1690s included ice on both the Bosporus and the Baltic so thick that people could walk from one side to the other.
The deep cold in Europe and extreme weather events elsewhere resulted in a series of droughts, floods and harvest failures that led to forced migrations, wars and revolutions. The fatal synergy between human and natural disasters eradicated perhaps one-third of the human population. The 17th century saw a proliferation of wars, civil wars and rebellions and more cases of state breakdown around the globe than any previous or subsequent age. Just in the year 1648, rebellions paralyzed both Russia (the largest state in the world) and France (the most populous state in Europe); civil wars broke out in Ukraine, England and Scotland; and irate subjects in Istanbul (Europe’s largest city) strangled Sultan Ibrahim. Climate alone did not cause all the catastrophes of the 17th century, but it exacerbated many of them. Outbreaks of disease, especially smallpox and plague, tended to be more common when harvests were poor or failed.
As you can see in the video bellow, which reconstructs the events of 1638-1640, the entire Europe was suffering from plague. But population was also declining thanks to numerous wars ravaging the Europe, especially bitter struggle between Islam and Christianity. Crimean ruler Tigranes IX Giray simply wiped Holland from the map of Europe. Taking advantage of plague weakening Dutch military Tatars easily captured Amsterdam and Groningen, but did not raze the latter, because of the marvelous World Wonder there, which somehow allows to escape anarchy when changing government. Great Khan did not want to keep the city, however, so he gifted it to fledgling state of Cordoba, prompting sharp French protest by their newborn king Louis XIV, or rather by his mother and regent, Queen Anne. Undeterred Tatars dismissed the French envoy, and shifted their attention to Dalmatian possessions of Serine Republic of Venice. Ragusa(Dubrovnik) was attacked by 4 Tumens of Tatars. First two withdrew, and the other two managed to climb high walls of proud Ragusa, and burn it to ashes.
What happened in the 17th century suggests that altered weather conditions can have catastrophic political and social consequences. Today, the nation’s intelligence agencies have warned of similar repercussions as the planet warms — including more frequent but unpredictable crises involving water, food, energy supply chains and public health. States could fail, famine could overtake large populations and flood or disease could cross borders and lead to internal instability or international conflict.
Naked Kyamil came to this world, but his father
Left this entire Khanate to Kyamil!
"May your sword be as sharp as your pen, my lion",
Whispered old Khan and gave his spirit to Azrael!
Stricken by grief, Kyamil went to the mountains,
Wept he and prayed to Allah many days,
"Oh Creator, I was skilled in Sufism and Poetry only,
How can I govern this people of mine,
How shall I destroy your enemies in Venice,
And their evil Serbian vassals?"
Holy dervish then appeared to him,
And told Kyamil to return to his palace.
"You are the Khan of mighty Crimea,
Your brothers, the Turks, fight with you for Allah,
Teach Venice lesson and sell them their peace,
Disengage from the Balkans and turn against Russians!"
Enlightened, Kyamil took heed to advice:
Five hundred golds he demanded from Venice
And island of Corfu, mightiest fortress,
He took in possession and gifted to Turks!
Venice, which used to be mighty and splendid,
Did not save herself with this desperate deal,
For Turks captured cities that Crimeans didn't,
And Austria captured the city of Venice itself!
Meanwhile Crimeans turned against Russia,
Smolensk and Orel fell prey to Tatars,
Russian Boyars did cause some troubles,
Annihilating our Novgorodian vassals.
But Mujaheddin shall prevail, Allah willing,
Tatars will continue press hard on Moskova!
Even as Azrael comes for Kyamil's mortal body,
His deeds will endure for ages to come!
Avvakum Petrov was a Russian protopope of Kazan Cathedral on Red Square who led the opposition to Patriarch Nikon's reforms of the Russian Orthodox Church. His autobiography is considered masterpieces of 17th-century Russian literature.
I was born in the Niznij Novgorod area, beyond the Kudma river, in the village of Grigorovo. My father was the priest Peter, my mother Marija, as a nun Marfa. My father was given to hard drink, but my mother fasted and prayed zealously and was ever teaching me the fear of God. Once I saw a dead cow at a neighbor's, and that nigth I arose and wept much over my soul before the icon, being mindful of death and how I too must die. And fom that time I grew accustomed to praying every night.
Before cursed Nikon's "reforms" our Orthodoxy was pure and our Russian Tzardom strong and large, with more cities than any Christian kingdom. But when our Patriarch started to change liturgy and church customs, our capital Moskva, the 3rd Rome fell to Tatars, just like 2nd Rome fell to Ottomans. It all started around 1660s -- for the sins of our Patriarch Lord God sent on us Tigranes XI Giray's Tatars and Barbarian Kalmyks. After few lost cities our Tzar lost control over the huge Russian lands and we descended into the civil war, breaking into many independent principalities, with all the Russian troops loosing their promotions and strength to fight evil enemies. For the next 20 years Tatars would capture one city after another, walls of Kremlin did not save even Moskva, which had 4(four!) Great Engineers settled there . Departing from their usual customs Crimeans did not raze our capital, but did us much worse -- surrendered our bulwark of Orthodoxy to the Catholic Protestant Poles!
It is hard to describe all the savage crimes committed by godless Tatars when Moskva was captured! They took the priest Lazar and cut his entire tongue from his throat. Just a bit of blood there was, and then it stopped. And he again spoke even without a tongue. Next they put his right hand on the block and chopped it off at the wrist, and lying there on the ground, of itself the severed hand composed its fingers according to tradition, and it lay that way a long time before the people. Poor thing, it confessed even in death the unchanging sign of the Savior. And that, sir, was a miracle that amazed even me: the lifeless convicted the living! On the third day after, I felt and stroked inside his mouth with my hand; it was all smooth, no tongue at all, but it didn't hurt. God granted him speedy healing. And he spoke plainly for two years, as if with a tongue. When two years had passed there was another miracle: in three days his tongue grew back complete, only a little bit blunt, and again he spoke, praising God and rebuking the apostates.
Wonderful are the works of the Lord and inexpressible are the designs of the Most High! He suffers punishment, but He has mercy and heals again. But why go on and on ? God's an old hand at miracles, He brings us from nonexistence to life. And surely He will resurrect all human flesh on the last day in the twinkling of an eye. Perhaps Muscovy will one day respawn a-new, and start fresh, expelling Poles from our cities given them by Tigranes XI. But who can comprehend this? For God is this: He creates the new and renews the old. Glory be to Him in all things!
Christian V (15 April 1646 – 25 August 1699) was king of Denmark from 1670 until his death in 1699.
Well-regarded by the common people, he was the first king anointed at Frederiksborg Castle chapel as absolute monarch since the decree that institutionalized the supremacy of the Danish king, he fortified the absolutist system against the aristocracy by accelerating his father’s practice of allowing Holstein nobles and Danish commoners into state service. Unfortunately his ambitions brought Danish Civilization to the complete collapse.
As king he wanted to show his power as absolute monarch through architecture, and dreamed of a Danish Versailles. He was the first to use the 1671 Throne Chair of Denmark, partly made for this purpose. He was able to break away from France, which was ensuring the protection of Denmark from Tatars and their German and Polish vassals. As soon as new Crimean Khan Tigranes XII Giray learned about split between French le Roi-Soleil Louis XIV and Christian V, he ordered his Chambuls into action.
Denmark was in precarious state in 1680s. Long war between Germany and Denmark at the beginning of the century allowed Germans to capture Copenhagen, only to vassalize later to Tatars. Danish capital moved to Estonia, Reval (old name of Tallinn).
At the start of hostilities city was well defended by Knights, Musketeers and other units. Crimean siege wagon boasted only of 2 Bombard batteries, at the time when most progressive nations in Europe used Cannons. Polish support made Danes laugh -- Poles advanced with antiquated Trebuchets and Spearmen. Crimean Khan, recognizing that he lags behind in science, started Golden Age in his empire and inspired a Great Spy, which infiltrated Ottomans in Crimea, hoping to aid in stealing some secrets.
Unfortunately Danish King lacked the determination of his Muslim adversary. In his memoirs, he listed "hunting, love-making, war and maritime affairs" as his main interests in life. Speaking of love making, Christian V had eight children by his wife and five by his Maîtresse-en-titre. He publicly introduced his sixteen-year-old mistress, Sophie Amalie Moth (1654–1719), into court in 1672, a move which insulted his wife. His mistress was the daughter of his former tutor (Poul Moth), and he made her countess of Samsø. Such attitude did not embolden Danes, obviously. They lost Narva to Crimeans, Ribe to Germans and Kołobrzeg to Poles. Reval remained the only Danish stronghold.
Siege of Reval proved to be costly affair for Tatars. They lost their Bombards, and two more infantry regiments, Danish Knights would make constant sorties, picking on damaged Crimean units. Finally, after Tatars did 90% of the job -- Polish attacked the city with their antiquated units, forcing Christian V to flee. This created power vaccum in couple of remaining Danish cities and the entire civilization collapsed. As for the first absolute monarch of Denmark -- he died from the after-effects of a hunting accident in 1699 and was interred in Roskilde Cathedral.
All my life I was trying to build a Triumphal Arc commemorating the two and a half centuries of achievements of your loyal servants, my Crimean people! And yet the moment I completed it and Golden Age started in our beautiful land -- all the hell broke loose! First Germany, our vassal, broke away from us and declared war. Then mighty French Empire, with their Italian vassals followed the suit. Finally huge Austrian Army attacked us as well, laying siege to Głogów, belonging to Poland, our last vassal! Only 10 tumens of Chumbuls were available after all the non-stop wars we were waging, but Austrians came in much greater numbers. Two measly units of Polish defenders were begging me to stay and fight for their city, which supplied Crimea with vital tributes... Woe is me, I left my vassals to face 20+ Austrian units and retreated to Kołobrzeg. I was trying to buy more time, but it is so hard to raze troops fast with 1 city vs entire Austrian Empire! Austrians advanced to Polish Kołobrzeg, and once again I had to leave my vassals undefended and retreat to Siedlice. Enemy has Pistoliers with Pistols, while we still use bows and arrows! Woe is me again! How can we catch up with the rest of the technologically advanced world? It will be our only hope if we are to win this war!
Yes, there were some good news in my reign as well. Ottomans were true to our Defensive Pact and declared war on Germany, Austria and France. Germany collapsed from fear. France also made peace with us and paid 75 pieces of gold after seeing very little actions on battlefield. But alas our Turkish friends did next to nothing against our mutual enemies. Ottoman units go back and forth in their own lands in some strange maneuvers, while Austrian stack of doom already brought Poland on the verge of collapse! What will we do without vassals? Oh Allah, have mercy on us!
Great! Did you make mod to work? I believe you had some unpacking problems. Let me post 1720 save right away, it is a precarious situation you will discover...
I, Tigranes XIV, spent 10 years of my reign battling infidel Austrians. Habsburg Empire grew large and powerful thanks to Historic Union between Hungary and Austria. While Ottomans were procrastinating with almost 200 Pistolier units, Austrians used their forces very intelligently, trying to capture Polish Siedlce, which is a small but important city in Polish core. My vassal could collapse and deprive us from all the resources if we allow Austria to succeed. 2 Tumens of loyal Chambuls died, protecting Poles, but Austrians lost their entire first wave of attacking Pistoliers and Knights. Unfortunately second way at the end of my reign is even bigger. In a minor skirmish with them I got fatally wounded, and my last wish at my deathbed is this: may my successor do better than me!
