Riddle of Ages: Travelling Through History

well... this could be Ferdinand Magellan..

He started out with 5 ships but only 1 ship eventually made it around the world

EDIT: NEDIM!!!!! RAAH you keep beating me by 1 minute [pissed]

oh.. but still, stop it :p

is it Vasco Núñez de Balboa

he discovered the South Sea

Five started,
Five ships started
One came.
but only one made it
First he was
he was second in command
To give it a turn
but the first to claim command when the first died
Across the lost,
The calm
And the tropical,

three oceans
but not the land.
they didn't travel by land

is it perchance: Juan Sebastián Elcano
second in command of Ferdinand Magellan and in command after the dead of Magellan

Yup.

Finally. Thought no one would catch it!

Though, the "First he was/to give it a turn" is about how Juan Sebastián Elcano was the first to go around the world. When he arrived to Spain, King Philip II gave him a globe with the inscription Primus circumdedisti me (You went around me first in Latin).

hmm, didn't know about that globe but the rest fit so :)

here is the new riddle

hired they were
those heavy men
marched long
to win a battle they lost

you've got to be kiddin' me........:cringe:

it were 10.000 Spartans but I count it...

hired they were
those heavy men

a mercenary army of 10.000 hoplites were hired by Cyrus the Younger to claim the Persian Throne
marched long
their march started in the west of Anatolia and ended in the heart of Persia
to win a battle they lost
there they fought a battle on the side of Cyrus the Younger. They were positioned on the left flank and defeated the army in front of them. however Cyrus who held the right flank was defeated and killed during the battle.

my second verse would have been about what happened next.
their officers were invited for a feast where they were captured and beheaded
they soldiers elected new officers and started to march back
they eventually reached Trapezus (north in nowadays Turkey on the coast of the black sea)

Heh, thanks. Would have put the 10,000, but I wasn't completely sure about it.

Given that I have done the one before yours, I am declaring open floor!

EDIT: BTW, the front page has the list of the people that have guessed the things and what they guessed. So far, the only people who have guessed something more than once are myself and mayor.

:smug: three on my name
one very late but I did know that one (Agincourt)
one 1 minute to late (Battle of Berlin)
one pm'ed the answer (Berlin air lift)

o'right.... enough feathers up my own but :p will not do this again... just needed this :p
