Answer I was looking for was simply "to cover cows"
A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.
The police instantly arrested the murdered. Who did it and how did they know?

Re the light switches....
Turn two switches on, wait a while, turn one of them back off.
On the ether end of those 3 circuits, there is now one lit room, one dark room with a hot light bulb, and one dark room with a cold light bulb. Go upstairs and see which is in the room of interest.

Also... re the 10 miles-south-then-east-then-north-again question. In fact, you *don't* have to be at the North Pole to do this - there are many other places you can do it too! Where else?

Actually I've heard a different version with three switches and three lights. Having only one light simplifies it.
