Rifleman with Melee Combat Animations

Speaking of the Redcoat, perhaps you could do the same thing to him? :please:

Aw, man, they have they own set of animations. Lots of work for a single unique unit. :(
Well, maybe I have some time with nothing else to do sometime in the future. ;)

I just wanted to clarify this for myself and everybody else; so you are saying I can't use an existing rifleman model and simply point them at this animation? I'd have to swap the unit over to this?

That won't work correctly because I had to add a second rifle to appear when the unit engages in melee combat, the normal rifle disappears then. However, swapping the models over to the modified Rifleman.nif file should work (exchange the respective NiSkinInstance and NiTriShapeData with NifSkope. I guess Ahwaric did it that way).
The problem with the Redcoat is that it uses Redcoat animations, not Rifleman ones. For example the Redcoat has his rifle at his left shoulder when he is idle, the Rifleman has it at his right shoulder.

I want it because I think it looks more disciplined than the rifleman, and i have a few units in mind that may need that animation. And of course I remain clueless as to how to do it myself.

I haven't made any new civilisations yet, but maybe entries in this forum might help you:

If you mean new units with new characters, I used NifSkope for most of the work, here is a tutorial for the program (the program can be downloaded for free):

If you want to make changes in the appearence of the unit, try Blender (again a free program). Here is a tutorial:

Otherwise I again recommand this forum:

It has a lot of answers for many questions.

Sorry, took a while, but now I've also added the melee combat animation to the redcoats:

Enjoy! :)

Oh, that's nifty in so many ways.
You won't believe how many units use the red coat (either animations or appearance) as a base!

Thanks all. It's so much easier to do these thing now that I actually know what I'm doing. :)
Or at least think to know what I'm doing.

That's good to hear. Reskinning should be no problem with the modified nifs and kfs, but if the model is changed in some way a nifswap is necessary.

I know this is going to sound strange, but how hard would it be to rebone a regular pikeman/spearman to use these animations?

In particular, I am talking about your animations for Infantry but this seems as good a place to ask as any. I am trying to make a unit for FFH.
I managed to do a head & weapons swap easy but the finishing unit still looks bad since the body remains that of Infantry.

You mean you want to have a pikeman/spearman to use also the firing animation of the infantry? Should be doable. But with what should he fire with? Should he be equipped with both a spear and a rifle?

Hm, for starters you could try to nifswap the infantry model with the pikeman one and the two rifles in the nif with your spear. Maybe this already leads to good results.

The spear things work, I made a infantry that shoots from a spear.
But the pikeman model does not. The animations just don't fit... and SceneViewer simply crashes when ever I try to save the results.

Did you try a nifswap after renaming the pikemans "BIP..." skeleton nodes to "Bip01..." already? The result looks mostly alright, except that the hands are tilted 90 degrees. But that should be fixable with dummy nodes.

I will be honest with you.
Now I have no idea what you are talking about. I mean, I did not even know one can rename a node.

I give up.

Ah, don't give up so easily. What I mentioned is in fact pretty simple stuff, especially since you already know a bit about NifSkope. I've explained how to nifswap some time ago here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9203025 (post #3534)
Beside what I've wirtten there, you just need to rename the bone nodes of the pikeman to fit the infantry. For this, just unfold the NiMultiTargetTransformController node in the nif file and replace each BIP you see with a Bip01 (doubleclick on it for renaming).
With this you'll already will have a fairly good unit. If you want to tilt the hands then, I can also explain how to make and use dummy nodes.

I tried to fallow the instructions but no mater what I do I get an error.
If I use the SceneViever it crashes when saving, and if I use NIfScope I get an error saying: "block 69 "Vertex Colors" array size mismatch".

Either way, it does not save the file.
