I get civ 2 recently and i would like to know which units are the best when attacking in the modern age. Is it beter to use combined air and ground forces?
Or will be the best option to build a huge quantity of tanks?

I use tanks and bombards first, and whenever possible, howitzers - after all, they "ignore" city walls :)

Land units making contact can cause a diplomatic exchange; use Stealth Fighters and Bombers to clear out the cities and countrysides, then drop Paras or move in with Armor to take it all in one turn. Also use Spies to peek inside, sabotage improvements, and bribe when the price is right.

For cities:
Veteran Stealth Fighters can make multiple attacks in the same turn and don't have to worry about the surrounding terrain. However, if the city has AA defenses, Howitzers on a rail network work great.

The AI civs only force a discussion with you after you take one of their cities, so if you can empty them all first, then capture them all, you won't have to deal with a peace treaty being forced on you (assuming you are in a Republic or Democracy). Plus, Partisans don't activate a discussion either, so if you can take a city, then kill a unit with a Partisan, the AI won't want to talk with you as it normally does.

1) Vet spies if you wish to play 'naughty'.
2) Otherwise howitzers + engineers (and stealth fighters + paratroopers later on).
3) Armours are OK, except against strong units behind walls (which is quite common :) ).

I never play World Conquest, I usually go for the space race. But what I have learned from my time here at CFC, go for Howitzers or spies, depending on your money level and/or government. If I would go for Conquest, I'd switch to Communism first, so I won't have to go for peace (I always get UN, so I get a 50/50 to get on)

Anyway, the AI is stupid as h*ll. As I pointed out in the AI Stupidities thread, the AI first wants tribute, even when you are miles ahead technologically. Of course you refuse to pay, so the AI declares war. Then you take one of its cities, and it begs for peace.

Of course that's not a problem if you want to wage war, but their constant beggings for peace really p*ss me off.

Well I may "black-click", but I haven't used a Spy in my last half-dozen or so games...

No surprise if those games were Early Landing ;)

What I avoid using is the vet spy with a heavy suitcase (planting nukes), because it is such a powerful weapon that it is almost like cheating.

I also usually play 'no bribe', since bribing cities is no fun (but sabotaging a battleship and destroying it afterwards with an ironclad is so delicious :crazyeye: ).

Im a little sloppy and too careless, so I like a mixed force to rectify my mistakes:

Have a few spies (all the better to dance around occupied areas.)

Howies are the backbone of my city assault force -- make them about 50-70% + of your total combat force.

Have some engineers for roading & RR so the Howies can get to their targets with full move & firepower.

A tank or few for clean up; A few Jeeps in case defense is called for; a few leftover paritsans (stealthy move as well as dancing.)

A few Stealth fighters for multiple shots at easy targets.

Maybe a BB & Aegic Cruiser for sea safety & potential softening up of ports.

Generally, after you take out the opponent's capital, cities of size 10 or less are easy to purchase with your vet spies (less than $1K each) -- and are usually worth the price -- so add a few demanded trucks to finance the operation & send them in first, collect $$$, then take action.)
