Rise and Rule Startup problem

I downloaded RAR 1.02 and dropped the biq files and RAR 1.02 folder into the Conquests Scenarios folder as Alan described to do elsewhere. I can load RAR either normal or extended version via the Content button menu. When it loads, I get the following error:

And sure enough, when I look in the Civilopedia Buildings folder, there is no Palace Garden icon. Anyone got this icon in their RAR download? And/or how do I fix this problem?

Be careful. The error says there's no Entry in the pediaIcons.txt file, not that there's no icon.

This is an error I recognise, and I suspect you haven't followed all of the instructions I gave for installing RAR on a Mac. You have to actually replace the core pediaIcons.txt file, and a few others if I recall correctly, because the current release doesn't play nice with mods. You can't just drop the mod into the Scenarios folder. This is one of the many reasons we are waiting for Aspyr's patch.

Would you be willing to (re)post really succinct directions again how to make Rise and Rule work? I can't make it work trying my best to follow the directions you posted elswhere so far, and in fact, they confused me at at least one point. I want to make sure I'm trying to do the right thing here in the first place. Starting with which download and/or patch need to be used and including what can/should be kept from the minimal files included on the DVD.

Here are the detailed steps:

1. Download the Rise and Rule mod file here. This should result tin a file called RAR_1.02_Full.exe, which is a Windows installer, wherever you usually download to - tyically your desktop. You cannot use this file yet. You have to extract its contents and place them in the correct place on your hard drive.

2. If you don't already have Stuffit Expander then download it from www.stuffit.com and install it. I currently use version 10.0.2.

3. Open Stuffit Expander and drop the downloaded mod file from step 1 onto its window. It should expand the contents of the Windows installer to create two files called 'RAR 1.02 basic.biq' and 'RAR 1.02 extended.biq', and a folder called RAR, wherever you have set Stuffit to expand - usually in the same place as the original file.

4. Move or copy the folder and two files into /Applications/Civ III Complete/Conquests Game Data/Scenarios/. Your folder structure should then look like the attached screenshot.

5. Start up Civ3 Complete and select Civ-Content in the main menu. Choose the RAR Basic.biq or RAR Extended.biq. Select your game parameters, and play.

Note: I included a step to copy the Art and Text folders from Civ3 Game Data into the top level Civ3 Complete folder in my previous post. I think I had to do that to make the Rhye's of Civilization mod run, but it seems to be unnecessary for Risa and Rule when I try it now. Sorry if that confused things.

The above initial comment you made now seems to contrast what you just wrote about basically dropping the mod folder and two biqs into the Scenarios folder?

OK, yeah, I've got down the process you described in the last post for installing mods. This sounds like the general, no tweaking necessary method. For instance, I've added the Lord of the Rings mod and an updated Balancer mod this same way: the folder and the biq files go in the Scenarios folder, after which they show up in the Civ Content menu. I believe I first tried doing exactly this process with Rise and Rule 1.02. I'm downloading it again fresh to try it from scratch, and won't modify any terrain pcx files or anything else.

EDIT: Redownloaded RaR 1.02 and finally it appears to be working. Hooray!

EDIT 2: There are missing Unit art files, etc. that also need to be downloaded and added to make RaR 1.02 run with Conquests. I had already downloaded these prior and added them in after I got an error/exit. I'm on a second game seeing if there are any more issues.

Now if I could only resolve two other mod problems I am having (I dropped the biqs and folders into the Scenarios folder as I did with RaR):

Balancer v3.5: does not enable any civ to build settlers; they don't appear in the build menu choices. Everything else seems to run fine. I played a long time before I gave up ever having the option to build a settler.

Camelot: I get the following pediaicon crash message very similar to the one here for RaR involving building the early Beowulf wonder which appears to be a modified Statue of Zeus.

Thanks for the patient assistance. At least I finally appear to be making some headway. Now if I could just get a saved game to load too... ;)

Apologies. As I said, I had to do different things with different mods when I first looked at this. Since I don't use mods myself my memories from three months ago were hazy.

Yes, I found that Japanese Medieval Archer was missing when I tried playing a few turns last night.

The main problem is that different mods use different ways of defining other locations in the hierarchy of Civ3 folders. If they've tried to be too precise, or too clever in specifying paths that work on a PC then they may break on a Mac, with a different folder structure. I'll have a look at both those and see if I can offer any suggestions. The forthcoming??? patch is supposed to fix all this stuff.

Now if I could just get a saved game to load too... ;)
What's stopping that? I load saved games all the time! It's part of my C/S/GOTM job here.

Thanks, Alan. I got Beowulf fixed, though oddly I intuitively tried exactly what it turns out the remedy is when it first occurred (rename Zeus to Beowful in the pedialtext), but must have missed an underscore or something because I got the same error and figured it was something else.

I have run into another fatal error late in a game of Camelot:

The file does exist in the stated location, except the É is a small case é. Would that confuse the app? I renamed the large and small pcx files with a capital É and hopefully this will not occur again. I wonder if anyone else has encountered this one?

I previously mentioned if only I could load a saved game because I am the guy who started a thread on that problem with my game a week ago. I added another post a couple days ago and a saved sample game and am waiting any further advice. My game continues to exit instantly when I try to load any kind of saved game from any source. It's been in the OS X thread I started. Maybe I should have started a separate thread when I ran into the loading issue.

I am wondering if anyone else can play Balancer successfully on their Mac? Is the version on the DVD for Mac actually playable properly for anyone (you can build settlers?)

Re. Éoganacht, normally case would not be important. However, it's possible that accented characters are treated differently and it has to be correct case to be recognised.

I've replied to your load flle post - missed it before. Re Balancer, I've downloaded it but haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

The Eoganacht embassy icon crashed my game again just near the end, grrrr. The case of the file title doesn't affect it, that's now clear. Is this one of those hopeless path problems the patch should fix? I mean, the file is right there where it is supposed to be, but the game can't find it. It means I can't do diplomacy in the game, because pulling up a diplomacy screen where the Eoganachts are visible ends my game. Massive warfare breaks out late in the game and the diplomacy becomes kind of important. :D

Sounds a lot like it.

Brad previously advised waiting for the patch rather than trying to work around problems with mods in the current version. However, if you are really keen then you might want to try copying the "missing" file directly into the /Civ 3 Complete/Conquests Game Data/Art/.... folder structure. That's where the game may well look for any files it can't find in the Scenarios paths it thinks they should be in. If that doesn't work, try copying them to the /Civ 3 Complete/Civilization 3 Game Data/Art/.... folder structure. As long as you don't replace any existing files when doing this you should have no adverse effect on your installation.
