Hi all!

I'm just heaving a break from playing RoR on Regent as the Persians (I guess I wanted to prevent a Rise of Rome). To be honest it gets boring. In an epic game I could have some difficulties playing on Regent until the industrial age. Not in this Conquest. I get the feeling it was all just handed to me from the beginning. Getting a huge landmass to begin with, getting Egypt for free, the Macedonians where pathetic or just stupid enough to fight Rome as well. I don't even bother with the backwards Cynthians (whoever they are). They could give me my needed xxtra landmass but where is the fun in that? I keep on sending heavy cavalry into Persian-Macedonia now and getting ready to attack Rome. Although they do have a formidable military (I think) they seem to have them all in Northern Europe fighting Celts and Goths. There are 40 turns left and I don't expect to see any serious opposition from Rome before I reach Northern Italy

I am waiting for Rome to Rise but it doesn't! At least not with the AI playing it.....

So pls tell me: Am I playing too low level (time for a change) or are the Persians in RoR really a choice 2 easy 2 be decent?

I think you may be playing on too low a level. I played as Rome with Empeor settings and it was not easy. I think that Rome does have some challenges, even though they have the uber legionarries. I think the AI has challenges in "most" of the conquests that I have played. For instance, in Mesoamerica, the AI just isn't programmed well to enslave your units and sacrifice them. I found that conquest fun but too easy on Emperor level. Age of discovery was another really fun game, but also, way too easy because the AI just isn't smart enough to get their treasures back to their capitol in a smart manner. I'm currently playing this one with my brother and it's more fun with other humans. But in the AIs defense, they can do really well at Mesopotamia, Middle Ages, Sengoku because victory conditions are pretty much standard. (I'm only commenting on the conquests that I have played). So my advice to you, is if you find the conquests are too easy, try a harder level.

OK suppose you're right DogBoy. I'm finding the AI is just performing too predictable and bad in RoR. Got to handicap myself the next game. Are the Conquests easier then an epic game?

In the succession game forum, the Rise of Rome was played at deity level. Suprisingly Persia was by far the easiest game and the strongest civ. Playing both as Rome and Carthage (the latter is probably the hardest), it appears that Persia is very likely to win both those games.

Here are the 4 games if you are interested. Succession games are games where players cooperate and alternate turns playing a single player game.

Carthage Rise of Rome Game (Deity, Unfinished)

Persia Rise of Rome Game (Deity, Won)

Rome Rise of Rome Game (Deity, Unfinished)

Macedonia Rise of Rome Game (Deity, Won)

The conquests aren't necessarily easier IMHO. But some conquests with some civs are quite easy, like RoR with Persia, other conquests with some civs are quite hard (maybe harder than epic games), like Napoleonic Europe with Spain.

Just finished another 10 turns of the game and they really are too easy those Persians as general opinion here seems to agree. I attack Rome from the east and Carthage over the long stretch of African coastline. Since they are both locked in eternal warfare it makes them both lightly defended on there frontiers with me. The rich landmass of Persia combined with Egypt and Macedonia (which you really get for free) + a well placed FP just cannot be stopped.

I think that's a bit unbalanced for a scenario called "Rise of Rome".

Many thanks for the succession games links Greebley - they make for excellent reading and right now my printer is working overtime!

There are many scenarios that are geared toward one or more civilizations.

In Rise of Rome, by all means, you are supposed to be the Romans!

Still, the other nations are interesting, too, to provide a challenge for people who like it.

Even simplier than playing the Persians in RoR, try playing the Abbassids in the Middle Ages Conquest... they play very "normal" and have strong units and good and connected land to settle.

I like the amphibious and military approach of the Norse civs, like the Danes, but they are seriously way behind the Arab civs by all means!

However, the AI is stupid... I still lead, the only nation that has a quarter of my VP are the Abassids. Many players observed they are doing best in this scenario, just take them yourself and take a quick look, and you will know why. They have simply much better starting and expansion conditions.

They've got it pretty good. I played once as them and found it way way way too easy. Now I've switched. ;)

There's so much variety in each Conquest - I like that you can pick an easy one (like Persia in RoR) or a hard one (Carthage.) This means you can match the civ to your ability, or mood, as well as adjusting the difficulty level.

I had a blast with Persia - it's fun to build a big empire - and now I'm doing Carthage for a change.

Suppose you're right tomart109, I should see it as a new kind of difficulty level. I was in a "Carthage mood" and ended up picking Persia...

I'm going to have a first look at Fall of Rome next. Does anyone out there has any insights in the easy and hard civs to play Fall of Rome with?

I'm playing as Persia in RoR at regent and it's pretty easy except macedonians send like 10 hoplites every 2 turns and now 7-8 heavy cavalry also every 2 turns.

I just finished a RoR game on regent as the Romans.

Let me begin by saying I bought Conquests about a month ago but I've had very few opportunities to play. I've played mespotamia one three times, as Egypt, Macedonia, and Phonicea (sp?) and won each time.

My first try I chose Rome for RoR. Despite a great military, being sandwiched between all the civs hampered me quite a bit. I seemed to be at war Carthage AND Macedonia at the same time far too often.

It took me too long to really get going on this one. When time ran out it was pretty much just the Persians and Romans, but the Persians had the higher score so I lost.

I'm surprised Persia has it so easy. I struggled through the first half while they skated. Bleh.

I think I'll give it ago as the Celts.
