Rise of Rome revisited...

Hows it goin' Gonzo?

Heres a little ditty I wanted to share with all of you:

I think I may have a solution to the culture flip problem.

In my SP game, Ive been "beating" the culture flip by starving down captured cities to 1 population, then populating them back up with my people. It works pretty good!

Civil disorder is a big trigger of culture flips. Making ALL of a captured cities people into entertainers not only prevents civil disorder, it starves it down at the same time.

Nice, huh?

We could try it with the English cities, I bet it will work!

Hey guys!

Don't worry, I'm still alive and well. I have been very busy and got minorly injured yesterday during work. My neck feels like $#!^. Oh well, at least I don't have much anything to do now. I have 3 turns done and not much has happened. Look for my finish in a few hours. :)

There's a thread somewhere in the Civ3 forums where the Firaxis guys explain about cultural flipping and the calculations behind it. ;) About along the lines of what we have been suspecting so far.

Ok my 10 turns are up. Here's the file. Summary soon to come, sorry for taking so long....

Here are the MAJOR highlights of my rule.

1828 - Alexandria razed!
1830 - our infantry witheld against an attack and a great leader was formed, Germanicus. Oh yeah, a longbowman then killed the infantry and Germanicus died
1838 - Another great leader formed and killed by a longbowman killing an infantry, Just call me Ohwell ;)
1840 - Russia declared war(we made peace earlier), Iriquois wanted alliance so we gave in for 800 gold.
1842 - Made peace with england for Bristol and 500 gold.
Why = We have no more saltpeter for cavalry. We get tanks in 3 turns. After we change production from knights to tanks and turn out a few, we will be able to chew up and spit out the english. The next leader will witness the fall of England!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Again, I am sorry for taking long for my turns. I really didn't feel like playing CivIII until I turned it on and fell in love all over again.

It is now Knight-Dragon's turn and Toasty is on deck.

So, let's see, the score is now:

English Longbowmen: 3
Roman aries and Great Leaders: 0

If only I knew some Shakespeare. There must be an apt line somewhere in Henry V or Julius Ceasar!

Peace reigns.... :)

Highlights : -

1842 - Renegotiated deal with the Iroquise. Now getting 44 gold per turn fr exporting wines to them (instead of 10 per turn).

1844 - WLTKD everywhere due to end of war! An Imperial Tour to reset each city's prod. Stopped all jungle-clearing and sent the workers to work on our main cities' tiles.

1846 - An Army was readied in Veii. Reset lux lvl to 0% and poured into science.

1848 - Fort Knight was founded. We seized the oil tile fr the English! Virconium was founded. Moved forces outside Fort Knight so that they won't be lost in case our city flipped. ;)

1850 - Began migrating ppl to Fort Knight. Connected the oil tile in the south. Began building tanks! :D Rushed temple in Fort Knight. Founded Fort Dragon on a hill to anchor our new defense line towards the east. Began fortifying that new line of defense.

1852 - Rushed temple in Fort Dragon. More ppl migrated to Fort Knight.

1854 - Rushed library in Fort Knight.

1856 - Rushed walls in Fort Dragon.

1858 - Rushed colliseum in Fort Knight.

1860 - Rushed library in Fort Dragon. Began migrating some ppl to Fort Dragon. Began the Battlefield Medicine in Cumae.

1862 - New Army in Veii. Began the Pentagon in Veii.

End

Note - I have left 9 tanks and 2 Armies in Veii, leaving the decision of whether we'd be building inf armies or tank armies to the next person. Also left 6 cavalry outside Fort Dragon and the rest of them and all the artillery outside Fort Knight. Also more inf to guard our main cities.

Suggestion - I think the English have no oil! Let's kill them all and seize the continent! :crazyeyes

I'm up AGAIN? ALREADY? Ah well, we have tanks and finals are done with, so I'll get to it. Expect to see my summary in a couple of hours.

Hey, this is the first time I've seen Caeser in the Modern Era.

I decided to fill the armies up with tanks, seeing as the English's best attacker only have 6 attack and tanks have 8 defense.

1862: Fabulous! England & Russia signed an MPP, and then England declared war on the Iroquois...war between us and England looms ahead yet again. I sold Irong to the Iroquois for...23 gold per turn, their entire surplus. I didn't want to take away their surplus seeing as they're keeping the Russians busy, and Iron is outdated now, so I didn't take it. Signed a RoP w/ Iroquois, planted spy in England (good news Ohwell, they only have one longbowman left!). Started making more tanks and less infantry. Made both armies in Veii tank armies; They have 8 defense, best English attackers have (scoff) 6 attack. One in Fort Knight, one in Fort Dragon. Had to renew incense/furs + 96 gold.

1864: just alotta worker movement, few more tanks moved to Forts Knight & Dragon.

1866: More tanks (woohoo!) and a battleship completed. Ooops--tried to plant a spy in Berlin, we're now at war with Germany =\. That means it's going to be Rome/Iroquois vs. England/Russia/Germany. Peachy. I'll give the Iroquois the tech and resources for tanks if they really need it...I sent a little expeditionary force to New Hamburg, a German city on our continent (grr!). More tanks geared up at the English border. Plan of attack: go for London, tacking Warwick first.

1868: Nothing much.

1870: Expeditionary force lands by new Hamburg. Stupid domestic advisor nags me about growth. I tell her to shove it.

1872: New Hamburg is captured and razed. Inbetween turns, England attacks Iroquois; we are, again, at war with England.

1874: The WHOLE COUNTRY goes up in demonstrations. I cut back the science rate since we're only 1 turn away from radio, give them entertinment, and raise luxury rates. Darn whiney citizens...we're only make EIGHT GOLD per turn. I take up the Iroquois on the Iron deal. Berwick taken and razed with 1 tank. Ipswich Taken with 2 damaged tanks, 1 lost (dangit!). We lose Bristol to English mass artillery...uh-oh. We lose fort knight! ARGHH! They were dumb enough to keep it, though...

1876: We discover Radio and move into the modern era, with fission so that we can control U.N. elections. Ceaser looks REALLY cool!. Fort Knight retaken, mopped up some damaged English cavalry.

1878: Take Warwick and raze it. Decide to let our tanks take a couple break turns; cover them with armies.

1880: Pentagon is finished in Veii. We capture four English artillery pieces. Less to deal with (yay!) outside Warwick.

1882: We take Calisile and raze it. The darn Germans & Russians still won't talk to us; We decide to end our MPP with the Iroquois as opposed to giving them Atomic Theory for one. We move on Yourk, lose 2 tanks in an attack to kill off some more conscript infantry.
1884:

1878:The Iroquois economy is so poor now they can only give us 28 gold per turn instead of 44 for wines. Gah, we need it to stay afloat, so I accept. We lose a destroyer off Dover to an IRONCLAD! Of all disgraces to our navy...We take Portsmouth and raze it. Kill a Man O' War of the coast of Pisae with a Battleship

1880: peace is made on the Eastern continent, and we make peace with Russia with no losses. War only rages on the Western continent, and a phony war is fought b between us and Germany. EEGAD!! The English landed EIGHT CAVALRY right by Leichester. We got 3 tanks this turn...hmmm...They also landed on Richmond I.

1888: Heh, heh, not much happening, I keep forgetting to write in log. Trying to take york, not being very successful. The English made several attempts on Leicester, Richmond, and Fort Knight--all failed, except Richmond, which was captured .

1890: Our Oil source near Fort Dragon was exhausted. We FINALLY took York, killed an English GL (yaaaay!) and captured 4 more artillery pieces. The whole English Army force is moved into York to heal, and the Ethnic Cleansing begins. I rename it 'Toastyopolis" :king:.

Well, in my turn, I took & razed New Hamburg, Berwick, Ipswich, Calisile, Portsmouth, retook Fort Dragon, took what was formerly York, killed a GL, and only lost Richmond. Not bad, eh?

Also note: I think they might be out of Rubber...:D :D :D

And, of course, the file:

WOW! Things are going fast and it's my turn already! I spent all day on the German game and won't be able to play again until tonight or in the orning. Hang in there guys I'll get to it as soon as I can!:)

English cavalry attacked Toastyopolis and it looks as though we lost a tank army! Our remaining damaged units were sent to Exeter for R&R. The English attacking the former town were destroyed and we captured three batteries of artiller.

Our infantry army occuppied the mountains outside Leeds in preperation for an attack on the city which will leave the road to London open to our forces.

We sunk a destroyer near Richmond and a transport is there! Infantry units are called to the front and they dig in.

1894: No English attacks this year save for a cavalry raid that destroyed the road to our rubber depot near Toastyopolis.

Our battleship sunk the pesky English destroyer as artillery and infantry are called from Hadrian's Wall and sent to the Leed's Task Force.

1896 We lost a battleship and ironclad off Richmond! A destroyer and transport are sighted leaving Leeds. English cavalry tear up the Ivory Road near Toastyopoli as their infantry and musketmen take up positions out side said city.

More to come...

1896: Leeds razed. Palatine Hills and Lake Donipius founded. Task force assembled to retake Richmond.

1898: Our unescorted transport carrying the Richmond Task Force is attacked by an English battleship and ironclad. It sinks both without even scratching its paint. The task force lands. Port Sig founded.

1900: The Richmond Task Force incurs heavy losses even before attacking. It re-embarks the (now elite) transport. (Too bad the transport couln't attack the city!;) ) The shelling of London begins. Four tank divisions attack London whose defenses are now almost gone. There are no more tanks left to attack with - they are too far away!

1902: London occuppied. The Sistine Chapel is now ours. Four cannon batteries captures as well as more English slaves. Memphis shelled from land. Richmond shelled from the sea. Pi-Rameses bombed from the air. Latin Quarter founded. Memphis razed with the loss of one tank battalion. Hadrian's Lines formally abandoned - in order to press our attack northward into England.

1904: The English attack London and we lose a tank division but hold the city. Richmond, Pi-Ramese, Canterbury and Elephantine shelled and/or bombed.

Summary: More of our cities are producing improvements than war material. We have adequate forces to deprive Elizabeth of her kingdom. Our treasury has stayed above 1000 gold. Some of our cities are celebrating 'We Love Ceasar Days' and most are growing. Many of our workers have settled in our newest cities. I even allowed a Greek slave or two to settle. The English slave are working on our railroads, etc. Our science rate contiunes as before and we'll have fission in two turns.

The next player should have fun if he likes war.:)

Sounds like you did good :nya:

Whos next?

:scout: :nono:

I think i'll have to skip this round guys. I'm in an exam period (exam tomorrow, heavy revision for the rest of the week :( ), and haven't got the time for Civ unfortunately. Probably better if I return next round when i'll have more time.

Bear.
