Rise of Rome revisited...

I'd like to have my turn skipped this round until further notice...my internet has crashed and I've succumbed to NetZero.
(As of 1/6/02: Cable is finally back. Scratch that.)

Good luck! May the Egyptians be trampled beneath our Legionaries' feet!

Joe: 2 games since net went down...both of them wars with Egyptians (they got partitioned :goodjob: ). I guess Cleopatra needs to learn how to get along, eh?

WOW! It has been ages since I played this game, but I forgot anyway, just like you did, Joe:rolleyes: j/k:D

I bet I will be very suprised to see what happened, I bet we have infantry by now! Last time I played we had some caravels and pikemen.

Joe, hurry up! *Grumbles*

If you weren't so darn good at war we woulda skipped you by now, so hurry up!

Hey, I was just reading through this thread and was wondering if there were any more openings. Saw a post on the German thread so that's why I'm asking. If not, any referals to another game would be great. Im in the US in AZ. GMT - 7 time zone so it's 10:30 here. Let me know by tomorrow:)

There is room for you Gonzo but I think we're giving joe another day or so. When he plays or passes I'll put you in the rotation.:)

Thank you for the compliment, Toasty. <bows>

Im also good at domestic improvement too, and Im confounded with the state of ours.

Our workers efforts are ENTIRELY wasted. Rome has unimproved squares, and workers are chopping trees on tundra elsewhere.

New luxuries are unconnected, yet workers are again chopping trees at a size 3 city (forgot the name).

We are building universities in cities with a whopping 10 points of science and no marketplaces. Rome has no bank or university.

On the brighter side, we can probably get by without saltpeter. We are close to nationalism, and riflemen dont need it.

I switched around the citizen workers in almost every city, many potential shields were unused. Veii is already size 12, it needs some mines not more irrigation.

The war with Egypt should be ended. Their territory is so far away, and has no luxuries or resources we need. Its a pointless conflict, we have nothing to gain. We should be fighting England, except they would kick our @$$ good.

I cant even talk to Cleo yet. The Egyptians will not acknowledge our envoys.

I am currently about to attack their cities and raze them for the workers. Hopefully to get a peace treaty too.

The opportunity to flip the English cities around Heraclea has been lost. No one built a library, and the English cities have more culture than ours now. The English may flip ours, and take our dye!

I dont see any long term strategy here, are we trying for a military win? If so, we have to tech up big-time, and get tanks and planes. We have knights and catapults for offense against musketeers and cavalry right now. Not good odds.

I suggest this:

We end all offensive operations and build wonders and improvements only.

Cities with low trade can produce workers and wealth, after markets and such. Universities are expensive, and should be built in cities with 12+ science beakers.

When we get Theory of Gravity we build Newtons in Rome.

With Smith's we have free markets, banks and harbors (airports later). Then we can increase science.

Once we have tanks, planes, infantry and artillery we attack England and take over the continent. <---my favorite part ;)

Til then, lets fly under the radar. Discretion is the better part of valor. Then later we will kick some serious @$$!!! :D

This post is not meant to be condescending to anyone. My sole objective is to restore some order and direction. Strategy is the name of the game.

I am completely open to debate on all points.

Any comments?

If the Egyptians have saltpeter, then I think we really need them. Without saltpeter we can't get our navy up for another 40-60 turns, and won't have any influence on the Eastern continent.
The Egyptians would be an easy kill, I'm be willing to bet the English can be pulled over to our side to kill the Egyptians.

If we had Egypt then we wouldn't need to fly low.

Long-term, maybe an economic powerhouse strategy? Smith's sure will help with that, and we could just buy tech. Egyptian cities sure are purty...

Anyways, good luck joe, but I'd rather partition Egypt than just lay low and hope no one attacks us.

Glad to have you back joe!

You make many good points but it's been so long since I've seen this game... I don't think we ever had a long term goal in this game. Last thing I remember is fighting Greece!

Making peace sounds good esp. if we are a republic. Getting England to help us kill Cleo may mean that England gets most of Egypt (I learned that lesson in the German game). If we're behind in science will be in deep later on so peace may well be the way to go now.

In any event you're at the helm now joe so do what you think is best.

Personally, I think whatever Joe decides, whether it be war or peace, should be carried out for at least the next 40 turns or so. We would rather end up playing 1 style together than 5 styles apart. But, I really do not wan't to come across as being pushy, because i usually am not. All decisions anyone makes will be supported by me:)

P.S. Im not trying to suppress any opinions or enforce Joe's decision as law, I'm just offering my opinion. Keep up the good work everyone.:)

Roman legions, knights and catapults poured into Egypt from the sea. The city of Giza fell to our mighty soldiers, then Heliopolis.

An Egyptian counter-attack by knights was beaten back, but at high-cost.

The Romans now marched on Thebes, nothing left in their way.

Once we arrived, we discovered a new source of saltpeter in the hills next to the Egyptian capitol. Thebes was guarded by musketmen! Our knights went into battle with great bravery and tenacity, but were no match for these gunpowder weapons.

A stalemate ensued. We bombarded their capitol with our lone catapult to no effect. Our elite legions and knights could only stand and watch. Something had to give.

It did. England declared war on Egypt! Hordes of cavalry began sweeping all Egyptian cities from the map! The speed with which the English conquered the rest of Egypt was astounding.

Our worst fear came to pass, English cavalry took Thebes as we stood and watched helpless! They took the saltpeter before we could get our new riflemen to Egypt!

Bastard English! Rome exists only due to the fact that England lets us. They are VERY powerful now. They beat us to Adam Smith's too!!! We built Magelan's Voyage instead.

Sensing our luck could run out with Egypt driven from the continent, Rome has entered into a Right of Passage treaty with England and hopes to remain in their good graces, until the day when armies much more powerful than mere cavalry are ours to command. Then England will pay!

Our domestic situation is turning around nicely! More workers were "hired". We have MANY more markets and banks, temples, libraries and universities, roads, mines and a new luxury, ivory. We are running a modest surplus, in hopes of aquiring 1000 gold to sit on and draw interest.

Rome is nearing completion of Newton's University, and should build another university IMMEADIATELY after. Wall Street is also near completion.

The new Prime Minister of the Roman Republic has options.

- Egypt has cities on an island. One of those cities has saltpeter. There are troops massed at Heliopolis with ships nearby. Do the math.

- Peace could be made with Egypt. Rome could get by without saltpeter, but would have to face the possibility of English cavalry coming into our lands and destroying us someday. We would exist at their mercy.

- Railroad will be available in one year, due to the invention of steam power and the discovery of coal in our jungles. A road is almost finished on the coal. A rail line from Rome to the English frontier would be of IMMENSE strategic value. *hint*

- Technology should be a NUMBER #1 priority! Lets reasearch electricity and scientific method next and build the ToE. Then bee-line for motorized transport.

We are almost ahead of England, they have democracy (bah!) and free artistry (ooh, so you have actors, were REAL impressed...). Everyone is building Shakespears except Rome, but we have steam power to ourselves for now. Industrialization is coming.

I wish you good luck, I sure didnt have any.

I did my best. I really tried hard.

England beat me to every turn.

I hate them. So much.

Suggestions and tips:

-I would deffinately NOT give anyone our tech at this point. We (finaly!) are ahead in some things. Make them earn it.

-The 1000 gold cap: Lets establish a treasury of 1000 gold and not spend into that. We draw 50 gold interest every turn with Wall Street. Then we can increase science a point. Everything above 1000 gold is fair game though.

Some of you are familiar with that strategy already. ;)

-Use it or lose it: We are a republic, and a damn fine one too. If a city has more than two defenders, disband extras in a city that is building something usefull. Each unit costs gold. Cities that are advanced can build riflemen for fledgling ones.

Border cities and capitols should be beefed up, ofcourse.

-Workers and wealth: Cities that dont have alot of trade dont need to build markets and such. Build workers or wealth. Every little bit helps in this game.

- The government question: I am very disapointed with communism in Civ3. I would almost prefer going to a Monarchy in wartime than communism. The war-weariness from our current conflict is nothing, so the republic stands.

In our German game, we had to switch out of republic due to MASSIVE civil disorder from war-weariness. Communism almost crippled us in science. Corruption is SHARED with ALL cities, thus ruining the good cities.

Not anything to worry about now, but down the road it may come up. If it does, I vote Monarchy over Communism, to spare the core cities from so much corruption.

I tried this in my SP game, and it worked pretty good.:goodjob:

Have fun!

Just to let everyone know. I will not be here until 8:30 AZ time. It is about 11:10 here now. If my turn comes up, go ahead of me until I get here and then I'll just take 10-15 turns of the current game(at that time) granted that no one is playing it then.
Thanks.

I agree with joe. If we can't get our saltpeter, we can buy and trade our way through the game...only problem is, we might look like a target for the English, so I would suggest increasing production alongside the economy. It would help to be able to pump out infantry and, eventually, tanks faster than the English.

On another note, DAMNIT!! Maybe we can get the English to give us some saltpeter before they decide to kill us...

Good job all the same, joe. If we can get those islands we might be able to match the English sometime...

Sounds like another big effort from joe. Thanks!

Ohwell is up and I put gonzo_for_civ on deck with Knight-Dragon to follow up. Sound good to everyone?

Sure, sounds good to me:D . I assume we are at peace with England, correct? Good, if we weren't I would abdicate:crazyeyes . So our goals are to make a run for tanks, build a trans- continental RR, keep gold above 1000, and get those egyptian Isles! Great! What I do best is expanding and perfecting cities, gathering rescources, expansion wars, but NEVER wars such as us vs England. The war we will have with them will be our true challenge.

- Are we automatticley going for conquest or domination? I suggest not. Space race seems like our best chance, but we will still have to 'annex' England because they would win without a fight at space race.

I will play either tomarrow or today.

Tis the middle of the century. Admiral Hammers, upon being elected to the Roman Republic, decides to make bold and unprecedented changes in Rome, and to bring Rome into the next century as a Great Power!

- 1510- The invasion fleet at Heliopolis headed out, it is directed to El- Amarna. However a victory there, an Egyptian Caravel sunk one of our Galleons, luckily unloaded.

- 1530- El- Amarna captured with three Knight groups, and one catapult unit:) . Caaualties of Rome- Zero. Casualties of Egypt- 2 :D

- 1535- The English have landed on the isle of El- Amarna! They plan to get Edfu before us!

- 1540- Luckily, our Knights captured Edfu, and the Egyptians are no more. Upon getting Edfu, we recieved saltpeter, and we are building a harbor to transport the goods to the homeland. England called up a meeting to cancel the Right of Passage, and seemed annoyed. When we offered her 4 g/turn, she quickly agreed:D

1550- Rome build a great university, in honor of Sir Isaac Newton. Also built was Wall Street. Germany called us up, demanding wines. We told them to go stuff themselves, and they wimpered away:lol: .

1555- Riflemen rearmed from pikemen to guard border cities.

1580- Electricity discovered, Replaceable parts is our goal.

Accomplishments in short:
- I established a MAJOR railroad beginning, sure it isn't good yet, but it takes a long time.

- Cavalry being trained and sent to border cities.

- 1000 gold not reached, but still getting extra gold from wallstreet.
- Many new riflemen trained, also many pikemen upgraded.

- Admiral Hammers achieved his goal of modernizing Rome by the turn of the century, and died a quick, but happy death.

- Good Luck Ceaser!

Good work Ohwell!!!

You conquered Egypt! And before England too!!!

*whew* Im glad you kept the peace with England.

I hate to admit it, but they are the only civ that scares me. They could hurt us real bad if they wanted to.

If a university (improvement, not wonder) is built in Rome now, it should start chugging out some serious science beakers. Woo-hoo!

Things are looking good for the Romans now.:D

*****Damn good job! *****

Thank you for the complement! The Egyptians are dead! If only they were as puny in the German game:( .
England has us in an awkward position, they can manipulate us to their whims. We are going to have to comply with their rules for a while. I already had to give them 4 gold a turn to keep the ROP, which keeps them from attacking us. It is a good thing they aren't militaristic, we would be dead. They aren't showing any agression, I havent seen any troop movement near us, only workers.

To whom is up next, or after him, or after him, or him- Build a line of forts on the borders to England. Better now then never.

Infantry and artillery coming!
:D
