Rising Tide Screenshot Discussion

Given how much effort Firaxis pumps into their graphics, I'm 99% certain those are just placeholders for playtesting while the real models are being completed.

The clear water with the continental shelf/deep water dropoff does look quite spectacular...

Eh. A lot of people thought the same thing about the worker units, thinking they would evolve with your affinity (at least in appearance). Turns out nope, not happening.

Same with perimeter defenses, people thought eventually we would see some graphic depicting walls around our cities like what was shown in some of the concept/poster art. Also nope.

I dunno, for me those things sound like "nice to have things", rather than being as immersion-breaking as land-based Farms built on the seabed.

I could be wrong, of course, but I'm going to be optimistic and expect new models to come along. :P

Oh man, i hope that's not final... Please dont tell me that underwater/floating academies have a green garden, just like the land version  . Frankly that screenshot is depressing.

That fact that you would even think it would be final, depresses me.

I could see land based farms being just a placeholder but as far as things like generators and the like... eh, hard to know.

I still think that "farms" on tiles that don't have algae is kinda stupid unless another sea based food resource is added.

I think most of the Land tile improvements being on sea is pants on head crazy. At least using the same models.

I'm sure that those generators aren't going to be the same as what we get in the fall. Number one, it's obviously ridiculous that there's a generator on the waters surface without any buoyancy equipment. Number two, there are a large number of easy water replacements for the generator. Hydroplants and floating solar plants like the ones Japan has started building, Namely.

Dear God, are we really discussing if the obviously placeholder graphics are permanent? I'm at a loss. Either people on these boards are compulsive posters and can't not discuss something even if it is nothing, or get some strange satisfaction out of being cynical. Shaking their heads in despair over something that cannot be.

Floating, not at the bottom. Just a reminder for those who could desperate and say they won't replace the models with proper ones ;)

Do we think that bare terrain will have the same basic improvements as on land? I think it would be a lot cooler if there were different, water-only improvements that had different yields than land improvements. Some could be built on continental shelf, others only in deep ocean, etc...

I sort of assume they'll also get rid of the water refinery, right?

In my opinion improvements in general should work differently at sea.

Perhaps underwater mines and whatnot could require energy to maintain with, perhaps, some base food yield from auxiliary fishing operations.

Floating Generators could perhaps grant +1 energy and +1 food instead of the traditional yield to fit the theme.

A dedicated food building could also require maintenance.

This could be a small step to the goal of making sea cities not just be land cities with blue tiles.

I'd go the other way with a seafloor mine and have it decrease food while increasing production, and in general having things build in the water cost you something makes sense cuz you know, we don't live underwater.

I'd have it cost energy to maintain personally.

Since I can't think of a reason for increased production, I'd give it the same production and a food yield for the fish.

I'd think that any ocean floor operation that wasn't food related like mining would scare off fish or damage habitats. I'm just assuming that the base food yield of water tiles is fish related and that building something in a water tile could only disrupt fishing.

That makes sense, perhaps instead some fishing building could give a boost to coasts and oceans with normal yields with maintenance on the tiles?

Not sure at the moment.

Although what you say makes sense, I doubt firaxis would go this deep into thinking about this, and implementing it into the game. (if that's what you mean)

I personally think they will just make some sort of a tile improvement for food. Probably like they did in Civ V, build a boat, and send it to a tile. Although a new food gathering mechanic would be very interesting for water cities. I think they need to let their creativity run free with this one.:goodjob:

So...... are ships going to be able to just... float by without care? WATCH OUT FARM, TITANIC COMING THROUGH....

Or...

But its' graphics, I don't think they matter that much.
