Rising Tide Screenshot Discussion

It kinda makes me cringe whenever people say "it's an alien planet".

Being an alien planet that supports life to a large extent (native and foreign), it is still bound by similar laws of physics and presumably similar living conditions to Earth to be classed as habitable.

It's going to be pretty similar.

Sure it's going to be fundamentally the same. Water in some form, metals, geologically active, etc. But the degree in which certain features appear, and whether certain features appear, is a variable that we simply don't have enough data to know anything about. Civ:BE is a science-fiction game, it doesn't necessarily have to be completely realistic. Believable? Sure, but an exotic ocean with features we don't have here on earth isn't necessarily unrealistic.

Alien can also mean foreign or non native. So technically we would be the aliens..... oh woah!.

I'm not sure if I have ever read about a truly alien world.

I've thought that to myself. That it's strange that the aliens are called aliens even though they're not aliens because they're on their home planet.

Oh, sorry, haha.

We need Mr. Joel Green here, perhaps. Reading Systematic Destiny Part 3, it seems you just need a flowing liquid to cause molecular reactions to create life -- it doesn't need to be water like on Earth.

Though, I'll assume you meant an alien planet to support "our" life. Yes, I'd imagine it would need to be similar. But, similar doesn't mean exactly the same either. Hence, it's going to be different with floating stones, different land percentages, different organisms, different features growing out of it, etc. If you were to attempt the things of BE on a Civ 5 map, it wouldn't fly, because it's not an alien planet.

Also, I think even if a new planet is the same as Earth, it could still be referred to as an alien planet.

There was this Documentary about possible life on exo planets. And how they could evolve . Not sure but it might have been either channel 4 or BBC but even then most of the life had 4 four limbs two eyes, the only truly alien one was some sort of flying jellyfish cow thingy.

If a world never had a KT event creatures and plants would be much much larger. Rumours here persist on cyriptids but it's very circumstantial yeah I'm talking about the Loch Ness Monster type thing. But there's not much larger than an elephant on land.

But if I remember the article correctly any world Earth size is lucky just to have one or two major impacts. We get roughly one that's about 10 megaton every hundred years ish ...there you go put meteor strikes in as an event.

Who's to say a world couldn't be continually pelted by strikes or never see a single one due to a dense ring system that would drastically effect evolution of the life and the world itself.

Primordial worlds could be ones undergoing change because of this. Maybe ill finally have more than 5 geothermal on the entire map...

Sympathy for the alien, Gorb? Don't forget that a moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy...

So as we have no new screenshots atm, what would you like to see in the next one Firaxis releases?

I'm hoping for a Let's Play at some point, though unfortunately I think we're way too early for even an 'alpha' preview. I want to see around any UI improvements, how they've worked the lore into it more, etc. The little things in life, haha.

They're not deal-breakers for me, I fully expect to get a lot of out of the Rising Tide much like I did the base game. I just like the little things devs improve over time and I think showing them off would get people to understand how engaged they are with every aspect of the game.

@Barathor:

Sorry, I meant more that these huge dramatic 'alien' events aren't likely to happen. Mega-typhoons, etc. They're simply not realistic for a colonised planet even in science-fiction. Look at Interstellar for a good example why.

I'm hoping for new improvements and maybe another type of oceanic tile or so. Nothing huge, but some nice to haves. No point setting yourself up for something unrealistic, imo.

Huh? He said, "I say it's time we talk about a new screenshot." I was merely pointing out that the screenshot in question is not new.

And I did talk about it. What's your problem?

You misunderstood what I meant then. I meant new in relation to the thread, which I thought was pretty clear.

Depends, really, on how far they are with their systems. I'd actually love to see a screenshot showing the UI, Firaxis often overhauls the style of the UI with their expansions (see SMAX, G+K and BNW), I expect the same to happen with RT (especially since the somewhat drab UI was a complaint we heard a few times on the forums).

Seeing how Firaxis often locks down the art for units fairly early on (we almost always see units in screenshots, even early ones), it'd be interesting to see a hybrid unit in action, possibly even one on land (even if that's not thematic, just to see how much attention they pay to the land gameplay, too).

There appears to be 2 Patrol Boats models in the most recent screenshot. I'm going to assume the upper one is the Tier 1 and the lower one, being Tier 2.

I'm very interested to know what the purple barnacles and light blue outcropping are.

Quite agree a preview of a Hybrid unit would be nice. Maybe you need one of the aquatic resources to fuse the two affinity resources together??. Then again it could make hybrid units very costly.

I'd like to see a city screen for one of the new water cities. I'd also like to see a new sponsor naturally.

Concerning polyps and the blue rocky resource, I'd say the polyps will be a food source and the blue rocks will be like gems from civ 5 but situated on the sea--that is, production and energy.

Speaking of strategic resource uses for hybrid units, I also agree it should be more expensive.
