RK13 - The Great Prophet Game

I agree. With the Music line we could probably trade for Currency/CoL/Monarchy. HR will pacify both our neighbors and we can then continue towards Lib while growing our cities and cottages.

Good set. What was Gilga's demand? The screenshot's missing. He's Annoyed with us now, we should probably put a turn into Monarchy and then trade with Joao and switch to HR as soon as we can. Then head towards CoL/Currency/CS.

I'm torn about the settler. I'd like to block Gilga but if we settle 1S of the bananas we'd be inviting him to attack us. My thinking now is maybe 1SE of the clams, then another city on that offshore island, 1SE of the gems.

Bibracte should build a couple more workers once it grows in 4 turns as it could use a few more cottages. We are looking pretty decent, I think. If we can avoid a DoW in the next few sets we might be able to take a decent tech from Lib... at the moment it's not looking like anyone's going to beat us there, even without scientists / academies / bulbing.

edit: we could really use Masonry and Monotheism for OR, we should look into a trade for them. Being in a religion without OR kind of sucks.

Ah, I probably would've done the same then at that point in the set. Lets see if we can get him up to Pleased with HR, hopefully it's not a lost cause.

Good job refusing to give Aesthetics. Gilga can writhe in his corner. :lol:
Though you should've given Meditation to Alex. It wasn't much. :D
(Now to build an army to possibly repel Gilga...)

So where do we settle the blocker? Also I see a need for more workers and missionaries and army! Whew so much to build... so what do we do with our Great Artist Prophet? I vote for settle in capital or Vienne.

edit: one more thing... we thinking of any wonders to build?
Currently it's Parthenon or Paya (Artemis already built?)...

Settle in Bibracte, future Wall Street city.

edit: no wonders without marble... as you said, we have enough to build as it is.

Pre-turn!

Welcome to our show! Today, Miles is going to not only get a change of clothes, but an attitude adjustment as well. After this, he went to settle in Bibracte to do his job.
civ4screenshot0000.jpg

I sure wish this guy wasn't hated, we need that Monarchy...
civ4screenshot0002.jpg

Hold on a sec, I forgot to ask about where to put the settler...
civ4screenshot0003j.jpg

Silver site will pay off quickly, but blocker (I propose 1SE of the clam or 1SE of the banana if we're settling Silver) stops Gilga cold. I vote Silver, we can build settler slightly later, I don't see Gilga expanding further with that barb city as his "target".

Turn 176:
We get lucky with religion spread.
civ4screenshot0000q.jpg

Turn 177:
Joao takes a barbarian city and seems to have founded an island city. Wow, he's getting big...
civ4screenshot0001g.jpg

Verlamion founded, working plains forest to get work boat just in time.
civ4screenshot0002i.jpg

Turn 178:
Bibracte: Gallic -> Gallic

Turn 179:
Gilgamesh adopts Vassalage.
Whew, looks like we're losing any tech lead we "had". No one's still going the way of Aesthetics. If we're not going to build any wonders (I vote Great Lib now...) we might as well just trade it away. :D

Turn 180:
Gergovia: Granary -> Forge
Vienne: Missionary -> Missionary

Turn 181:
We get lucky with religious spread.
Wait, Alexander adopts Police State... you know what that means.
Joao gets a great scientist... see next turn for significance.
civ4screenshot0003u.jpg

Turn 182:
Bibracte: Gallic -> Worker
Buddhism founded by Portugese. BAD! Their scientist lightbulbed Philosophy!
civ4screenshot0004g.jpg

Turn 183:
Tolosa: Gallic -> Library (we're losing control of tiles)

Turn 184:
Our scout is stuck between a rock and a hard place. :lol:
civ4screenshot0005x.jpg

Tech: CoL -> CS
Cut research to 0%. Target gold amount for Civil Service is 480.

Everyone else has CoL. Trade it for Alex's Calendar.
Gandhi has Literature already. Oh well, so much for GLib.

Turn 186:
Get great prophet, settle in Bibracte right away.
Fish City: Work Boat -> Work Boat
Run 2 scientists at Vienne to slow growth.

Turn 187:
Bibracte: Worker -> Glib (26 turns)
Verlamion: Boat -> Boat

Turn 188:
Vienna: Missionary -> Missionary

Make this trade...
civ4screenshot0006.jpg

And revolt to HR (not Slavery as we don't need it).

Turn 192:
Statue of Zeus built somewhere, Islam founded somewhere

Turn 193:
Tolosa: Library->Gallic

Turn 194:
Verlamion: Work Boat -> Granary

Turn 195:
Hanging Gardens built, Ragnar adopts Theocracy

Turn 198:
This tile is weird, it can't be improved. It's a FLOOD PLAIN for Brennus' sake. Why can't I cottage it? Or anything it?
civ4screenshot0010.jpg

Turn 200:
Gergovia: Forge -> Settler
Joao has settled on the island Gems. WHAT... let's grab Gold site quick! Even over Gilga's blocker... we'll settle them both shortly. Vienne will finish another Missionary, I say next build is Settler. We can afford new cities thanks to our shrine and settled prophets.
civ4screenshot0011c.jpg

Tolosa has been pumping out nothing but Gallics for now.
Glib is due in 13 turns. But someone just birthed a Great Engineer this turn. Let's hope they build something else instead. :(
Since we have open borders with Gilga... we may send missionaries into his area for wealth.
I had continued accumulating money until this turn, now researching Civil Service, but we may swap out for something else maybe.
Here's what our empire is building right now. We need more workers especially in new areas.
civ4screenshot0012.jpg

We're losing our point lead, but so what... it wasn't meant to me. Maybe more land and Civil Service will fix the score. :D

Now all we need is Nationalism, HBR and Military Tradition. Or Liberalism line. Let's pick our poison. I forsee a war against Gilgamesh. Cats or Trebs, and Cuirassers. A potent combo.

EDIT: Oh yeah, we have a stack outside barbarian city. Wanna take it and raze it? Or keep our troops?

Lonely Roster:
RK/Meatbuster (just played 25 turns)
Glare Seethe (up)
White Dragon (on deck)

Well we don't have horses so cuirassers and cavalry are out unless we trade for them... might want to go the more traditional rifles/trebs or macemen/cannons.

I'm thinking, Tolosa needs more culture buildings (and with cheap temples that's easy), settle the gold city but not the blocker - I think we can just forget about that and focus on developing our seven cities. We'll be fighting Gilga's culture all the time and if we're going to war with him then what's the point? That city will mostly be useless, might as well let him clear all that jungle.

Definitely more workers. Switch back into Slavery because we're working a lot of unimproved tiles... Gergovia can contribute some workers after the settler. Continue with CS and switch to Bureau when available, try to trade for Currency and other useful techs (still without Mono... :(). Whip some courthouses. Aim for Paper > Edu next.

I have about... 4-5 hours to play my set as otherwise I can't play until Friday. :\ Any objections / suggestions?

Who says we have no horses... it's coincidentally right next to that barb city where we have stationed 2 gallic warriors and some other guys. :lol:

Oh all right, since we won't settle blocker (though I would to make it 8 cities, a magic number) I guess we won't take that barb city too. I guess it's maces and cannons for us. Someday we may be able to get Philo from Joao.

I wouldn't trade for Poly/Mono, let's just research it ourselves. We may still need to trade someday.

All right, sorry for rushing to play this set and not waiting for more discussion but I wanted to get it in tonight still as starting tomorrow I am most likely not going to be able to play until Friday... Family's coming to visit from abroad. Will try to be around and comment... possibly maybe sneak in a short set somewhere, dunno.

In any case...

IT, 400AD:

Switch to Slavery, whip granary in Verlamion, Gallic Warrior in Tolosa and workboat in Camulodunum.

415AD:

Tolosa starts temple, Vienne a forge, Verlamion a lighthouse, Camulodunum a granary. Gergovia whips the settler.

430AD:

Hey Alexander is Taoist! When did this happen? Gergovia starts a worker, whip forge in Vienne and temple in Tolosa. Away with all these unimproved tiles.

445AD:

Give Aesthetics and 270g to Gilgamesh for Currency, then to Joao for Masonry and 120g.

460AD:

Decide to make a 2-turn detour to Monotheism... if only to speed up the Great Library.

475AD:

Settle Durnovaria:

RK13---SettleDurnovaria.jpg

Gilgamesh is going to settle a city:

RK13---GilgaSettler.jpg

490AD:

Gilgamesh demands Literature and I oblige. Raze the barb city for 97g. Switch to Organized Religion, whip TGL for 5pop.

505AD:

Use the missionary to spread Taoism in Gilga's new city... he won't get any culture out of it anyway as long as he's Confucianist, right? Start Forge in Bibracte, whip some stuff in other cities.

520AD:

Give our only wine to Joao for 6gpt. We need neither the happiness nor the health for now. He's at Friendly by the way.

535AD:

Gandhi starts a golden age; Parthenon built in a far away land.

550AD:

Just noticed Alexander adopted Free Religion, oh well.

565AD:

Alex declares on Gandhi. Whip even more stuff.

580AD:

Not much.

595AD:

Deny Alex's request to declare on Gandhi.

610AD:

Joao wants Music for Compass and 80g. After checking the tech screen I agree as he's the only one with Compass and we can probably do a Music + Compass for Machinery or Feudalism with Gilgamesh. Plus we'll have Civil Service next turn so that's even more trade fodder.

625AD:

CS in, switch to Bureaucracy and save game. Picked Paper as placeholder. Joao will give us Feudalism and gold for CS but that's not such a good deal, it's the only tech we have on him. We can give Music and Compass to Gilgamesh for Machinery, though.

Here's the tech screen:

RK13---TechScreen.jpg

Ragnar seems to be the wild card as he already has Paper, we should watch out for him heading towards Liberalism. Our score plummeted even further because of all the whipping. At least we have some more infrastructure, though. I suggest more whipping as necessary.

Also the following:

- Gergovia to finish barracks and then nonstop military (crossbowmen especially if we do the Gilga trade). It has all of its infra right now. Strengthen defences in Verlamion.
- I put some signs on how we should irrigate near Tolosa but more importantly towards Durnovaria.
- Bibracte has whipped almost all of its infra so it can start growing some more, working cottages for Bureau, etc. We can whip the other cities but Bibracte is ready to focus on being an awesome Bureaucracy capital.

Your plan to put a religion in Gilga's city is good for our budget. Sadly, Gilgamesh is Creative so he'll pop the border anyway...

Bibracte has whipped almost all of its infra so it can start growing some more...
GLib... what happened to it? :D
(checks save)

edit: Awesome, we have it!

Time to build more units somewhere too. Gilgamesh attack looks imminent (hopefully he'll go for Charlie instead).

Let's talk about specialization...

Verlamion should prioritize culture a bit. I would build library and monastery after forge. Also we can cottage spam there too.

Camulodunum (fish city)... production or cottages?

Tolosa: Cottages or specialists?

Gandhi saying "soon my numberless Swordsman shall destroy you all" is priceless. I wish I had a screenshot of that.

Yeah I'm worried about Gilga, I retreated all of our units that participated in the raid on the barb city back to Verlamion and had the scout and warrior wander around Sumerian lands for a while. The warrior's heading back eastwards now and should be stationed somewhere along the border where we can watch for any military buildup. I think we should make the trade with him, though, crossbowmen would be a major improvement on what we can field at the moment.

That said, caving in to his Literature demand probably bought us some time. Plus if I recall he's not in WHEOOH mode at the moment... or am I wrong? But definitely we need some defense.

As for specialization: I think Tolosa should go cottages, Camu production (with Moai Statues maybe?), Verlamion I guess could go either way. I did put a cheap temple there to stave off Gilga's culture but you're right that it needs more. Just thought I'd put in a forge first to make whipping a bit more efficient. Durnovaria needs to be irrigated before it can be useful, so those grasslands need to be farmed before they can be cottaged... will probably be a marginal city for a long time still but it can work the gold and dyes and run a couple of specialists and contribute something.

I'm bummed we don't have marble or stone. Taking Nationalism from Lib is not as exciting without marble or not being Industrious, hopefully we get there early enough to have a chance to take something better. Printing Press?

Printing Press sucks, we don't have much land or towns for to be awesome. How about Guns.

Awaiting White Dragon... not to discourage you WD, but for some reason it's also your turn in PH16... :lol:
